James Rodriguez latest footballer on Spanish taxman's hit-list

Spain's taxman wants Bayern Munich's Colombian midfielder James Rodriguez to pay 11.65 million euros ($13.64m) for evading taxes when he played at Real Madrid, the El Mundo daily reported today. James, who moved to Bayern Munich last year, is accused of having evaded 6.35 million euros in taxes, mainly linked to his image rights, and would have to pay that amount plus a fine and interests for a total of 11.65 million euros, it reported. Citing sources close to the case, the daily said James was transferred to Real Madrid from Monaco for 80 million euros mid-2014, but that year he registered as a non-resident. Tax authorities, though, reportedly believe he should have registered as a resident, which means he should settle the difference, or 6.35 million euros, related to his salary and the sale of image rights. Spain's tax authorities refused to comment when contacted by AFP. The 27-year-old, who won the Golden Boot for the top goal scorer in the 2014 World Cup, joins a long list of ...

Miffed IOA asks NSFs to pay for damages caused by athletes in CWG

The Indian Olympic Association has asked national federations, including those of basketball, hockey and athletics, to cough up their respective share in the Rs 59,262 bill that the IOA had to pay for "the damages" caused by the country's athletes and officials at this year's Commonwealth Games Village in Australia. In an e-mail communication, IOA President Narinder Batra has asked Secretary General Rajeev Mehta to take this matter up with respective NSFs. "I strongly recommend that the total amount of Rs 73,988 debited to IOA by CWG OC should be recovered from the respective NSF's (less refrigerator hiring charges) immediately and the NSFs should be asked to speak with concerned athletes and support staff that such things should not happen in future," Batra wrote in his communication to the IOA secretary general. "Such kind of activities bring bad name for our country and these are basic things each participating NSF now needs to explain and tell its participating athletes and ...

Steyn backs England to win Test series against India

In spite of terming the Indian team led by Virat Kohli as capable of pulling off anything, veteran South Africa paceman Dale Steyn backed hosts England to come out victors in the upcoming five-Test series because of their slightly superior seam bowling attack. "Led by Virat this Indian team is capable of anything. I know Virat pretty well; he's quite a determined character. Five Test matches is going to be good for one team and if one team gets on a roll the other team will be blown away," said Steyn here today. "(But) if I know Virat it's going to be a hard fought Test series. The England bowlers are a little bit more skilled and that's where the difference will be; that will be the tipping point," the 35-year-old fast bowler told reporters at a promotional event for 'GoPro' here today. He also felt that with the Indian attack likely to miss Jasprit Bumrah (for the first Test) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (for at least the first three), things will not be easy for them. "India

German FA boss rejects Ozil racism charge, but admits mistake

The chief of the German Football Association (DFB) on Thursday rejected accusations of racism by Mesut Ozil, but admitted he should have done more to protect the midfielder against discriminatory abuse. In a four-page statement announcing his decision to quit playing football for Germany on Sunday, Ozil singled out football federation (DFB) boss Reinhard Grindel with harsh words. "In the eyes of Grindel and his supporters, I am German when we win, but I am an immigrant when we lose," Ozil, who has Turkish roots, wrote Sunday in his lengthy farewell statement that unleashed a racism storm in Germany. But Grindel rejected the charge four days on and has not yielded to calls for him to quit. "I say this openly that the personal criticism has affected me," he said. "I am even more sorry for my colleagues, the many people working on a voluntary basis and the employees in the DFB, to be branded in connection with racism. "For the federation as well as for me personally, I firmly reject ...

A beautiful game, another beautiful story: Real Kashmir FC to train at Dortmund

Aiming to expand the Real Kashmir FC community, the current path-breakers of Indian football are about to tread a glorious new path, as they visit Germany for a training stint at the renowned BVB Borussia Dortmund. RKFC owners Sandeep Chattoo and Shamim Meraj say they are just "carrying on from where we left" last season. "We were the first team from Kashmir to play in Scotland. We are now the first youth team from Kashmir to visit Germany for a training camp," the club said in a statement. Having dribbled past opponents and the many off-the-pitch obstructions to become Jammu and Kashmir's first football team in the I-League, Real Kashmir FC are in no mood to stop here. "It's just the beginning," Chattoo put it appropriately. "We want Real kashmir to be what Barcelona is to Spain and what United is to Manchester and what BVB is to (the) city of Dortmund. We want every kid of the state who loves to play football either aspire to play for RKFC or become a supporter by default. There is .

Vettel needs to rebound in Hungary to keep heat on Hamilton

Unless Sebastian Vettel bounces back with a strong performance at the Hungarian Grand Prix this week, he risks heading into Formula One's summer break lagging behind Lewis Hamilton. Vettel should have been the one in the ascendancy, but his clumsy crash while leading the rain-soaked German GP last Sunday cost him the race and gifted victory to Hamilton. Rather than stretching his lead, the German driver now trails Hamilton by 17 points after 11 of 21 races. Vettel also gave away points with mistakes last year and must avoid doing that again as he and Hamilton duel for a fifth F1 title to move level with Argentine great Juan Manuel Fangio. Despite his basic error at Hockenheim, where he led by nearly 10 seconds before sliding off into the barriers late into the race, Vettel has been striking a defiant tone. His confidence is down to the fact Ferrari has often been the quickest car this season, even more so than the usually dominant Mercedes of Hamilton's team. "Everyone knows what we ..

Sanchez on target as United edge Milan

Alexis Sanchez was on target as Manchester United defeated AC Milan on penalties in their International Champions Cup friendly here Wednesday. Chilean international Sanchez was United's best performer in a low-key game at Carson's StubHub Center which finished 1-1. Sanchez fired United into the lead with a well-taken goal on 12 minutes before Spanish midifelder Suso equalised for Milan three minutes later. Although Sanchez produced a lively performance for United, the Premier League giants were unable to find a further goal, sending the game to penalties. A bizarre shoot-out was won 9-8 by United, with both teams having to recycle their penalty takers after a string of missed spot-kicks. Ander Herrera fired United into the lead in sudden death with his second penalty before Ivorian youngster Franck Kessie chipped his spot-kick over the bar to give United the win. United's Portuguese goalkeeper Joel Pereira, deputising for the absent David De Gea and Sergio Romero, said he hoped his ...
