Minerva blank Sudeva 5-0 to advance to first U13 youth league final

Minerva Punjab FC posted a convincing 5-0 win over Sudeva FC in the first semifinal of the ongoing U-13 Youth League played at the Barasat Stadium here today. Minerva Punjab, who scored through Longjam Swami Singh (24'), Naoba Sanabam Meitei (35+1'), Tongbam Maheron Singh (38' & 52') and Kamalesh Singh Bisht (61'), produced a commanding performance to book their place in the final of the competition. Looking to stamp their authority, Minerva had the Sudeva defence under all kinds of pressure early on and they could have scored twice in the opening 15 minutes, were it not for a lack of composure in front of goal by Maheron and some excellent goalkeeping from Mohit Singh Dhami. Minerva's blistering start was to pay dividends in the 24th minute when Swami scored from a close range after being set up by skipper Himanshu Jangra. Sudeva continued to look shell-shocked and were nearly 2-0 down in the 29th minute when Maheron thudded a header into the crossbar. The rampant Minervans ...

Jason Day leads as Tiger fails to gain from softer course at Wells Fargo

Leader Jason Day overcame a rocky start to finish at 4-under 67 in the third round of the Wells Fargo Championship here. With 10-under 203 after three rounds, he is two shots clear ahead of Nick Watney (66) as the third round yielded decent scores. At the Quail Hollow, which was more amenable to good scores on Saturday, Peter Uihlein (62), Phil Mickelson (64) and Rory McIlroy (66) all made headway. Anirban Lahiri missed the cut earlier and will now feature in the Players Championships next week. While many players took advantage of a softer course, Tiger Woods failed to do the same on a course that was 228 yards shorter and soft enough that the players actually found pitch marks on the greens. Woods finally got going on the back nine with three consecutive birdies, but a three-putt bogey on the final hole gave him a 68. He is nine shots behind. Peter Malnati's 36-hole lead didn't last long. He had a pair of double bogeys, shot 75 and fell seven shots behind. While Day is looking good .

Suryakumar, Hardik star in Mumbai's second straight win

Suryakumar Yadav's successive half century and an all-round performance from Hardik Pandya powered Mumbai Indians to a 13-run win over Kolkata Knight Riders, keeping them in play-offs contention in the Indian Premier League. Yadav (59 off 39) continued his rich run with a fourth fifty of the tournament before Pandya (35* off 20) plundered the KKR attack to nudge the hosts to 181 for four. Yadav's opening partner Evin Lewis (45 off 28) too made a valuable contribution in the 91-run stand. KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik (36* off 26) tried his best to get his team over the line but was unable to after the visitors needed 60 runs off the last 30 balls. By the final over, KKR needed 23 runs and Krunal Pandya defended them comfortably with the innings ending at 168 for six. Robin Uthappa's (54 off 35) first fifty plus score of the competition also went in vain. It was another much needed win for slow starters Mumbai, who had beaten KXIP on Friday. Replacing Warner is impossible: SRH skipper Williamson

Named captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad after the banned David Warner was ruled out of the Indian Premier League's 11th edition, Kane Williamson today said it's "impossible to be a replacement" for the explosive Australian opener in the T20 franchise's setup. "I don't think it's a matter of replacing David Warner. I think that's probably an impossible thing to do. He is one of the best T20 batters in the world and for this franchise in the last few years," Williamson said. Warner was slapped with a one-year ban by Cricket Australia owing to his involvement in ball tampering during a Test in South Africa in March. Sunrisers overcame the loss of Warner in style, savouring more success than failures, to claim the top spot in the pecking order along with Chennai Super Kings. "It's nice to be on top of the table. But at the same time, I mentioned a number of times that we want to keep seeing those improvements, keep adapting to the different surfaces that we would be faced with in every ...
