Real in pole position after Asensio scores winner at Bayern

Real Madrid moved a step closer to a third straight Champions League title after substitute Marco Asensio hit the winner in a 2-1 semi-final, first-leg victory at Bayern Munich. The 22-year-old came off the bench to finish a counter-attack and complete the holders' comeback win, giving Real the advantage for the return game in Madrid next Tuesday. "We knew what to expect, we did well and put in a good performance," said Real captain Sergio Ramos. "There is still the return to come, but we'll be very focused and we defended well, that was the main thing." Bayern took the lead at the sold-out Allianz Arena through Joshua Kimmich, but Marcelo equalised just before the break and Asensio put Real ahead. "In the middle of the first half, we were playing well, but we lacked the killer instinct," said Bayern skipper Thomas Mueller. "Everything is still possible, but we did ourselves no favours today." Real must heed Juventus lesson to beat Bayern: Zidane

Zinedine Zidane says Real Madrid must heed the lessons from their Juventus scare in order to finish off Bayern Munich in next Tuesday's Champions League semi-final, return leg. Real took a step closer to a third straight European title after Marco Asensio hit the winner in a 2-1 first-leg come-back victory in Munich yesterday. But having suffered an almighty scare at home in the quarter-finals, when Juventus won 3-1 in Madrid after Real had beaten them 3-0 in Turin, Zidane says nothing is decided despite Real's slender advantage. "We will have to fight in the second leg, nothing is decided, that showed in the second leg against Juventus," said Zidane. "We will have to suffer again and face Bayern in a different way at home, because if we don't, we could have a bad result next week," he warned. The hosts took the lead at the sold-out Allianz Arena through Joshua Kimmich, but Marcelo equalised just before the break. Substitute Asensio hit Real's winner after finishing a counter-attack ..

Outstanding Rayudu instrumental in winning games for CSK: Fleming

Head coach Stephen Fleming said Mahendra Singh Dhoni's unbeaten 70 might hog the headlines but it was opener Ambati Rayudu's 53-ball 82-run innings which set things up for Chennai Super Kings as they secured a five-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore. He's like Che Guevara because he created a revolution at Arsenal. "He created unbelievable things and I don't know who else will come along and do what he did, winning the league without a defeat. The impossible became possible. Let's see who will come next." Boa Morte, now 40, won the Premier League and FA Cup double in 1998 with Arsenal. Daredevils seek revival of fortune under new captain Iyer

Struck by the crisis emanating from Gautam Gambhir's resignation as captain, a beleaguered Delhi Daredevils face a herculean task to revive their IPL campaign when they clash with Kolkata Knight Riders here tomorrow under young skipper Shreyas Iyer. Gambhir leaveing captaincy midway into the tournament does not guarantee resurrection of the side but the left-hander's decision has given the team management a chance to infuse new life into the franchise with new ideas. Gambhir's rough patch, along with poor form of other batsmen, has resulted in over-reliance on young Rishabh Pant. The team has lost five of its six matches and is languishing at the bottom of the points table. Gambhir the batsman would still be critical if a turnaround has to happen for the Daredevils but it remains to be seen if he remains in the playing XI. The hosts are now in an unenvious position where they need to win seven of the remaining eight matches to be in Play-offs contention. The 23-year-old Iyer is faced .

100 balls format still in England's sights

Plans to establish a new 100 balls a side tournament in English county cricket remain in place despite a review into the domestic set-up. Wednesday saw the England and Wales Cricket Board announce the creation of a "working group giving fresh thought to refining the structure of men's county cricket that has been agreed for 2020". Last week the ECB revealed its intention to establish an eight-team city-based 100 balls per side tournament to start in 2020, despite it having been previously thought this would be another Twenty20 event in addition to the existing 'Blast' featuring all 18 first-class counties. But given fewer than half of England's professional players will be involved in an eight, as opposed to 18, team event, doubts remain about the type of cricket those excluded from the 100-ball format will play. Gordon Hollins, the ECB's chief operating officer, said the working group had been set up, in part, to address that question. "A number of subjects and proposals have been ...
