Gayle, Rahul smash hit as Kings rule over Knights

The legend of Chris Gayle continued to grow in company of young KL Rahul as Kings XI Punjab outclassed Kolkata Knight Riders by nine wickets in a rain-hit IPL encounter here today. While KKR scored a competitive 191 for 7 in 20 overs, KXIP had a revised target of 125 in 13 overs after a sharp spell of shower halted play for 95 minutes. Gayle completed a hat-trick of half-centuries with an unbeaten 62 from 38 balls that had five fours and six sixes while Rahul helped himself to a 60 off only 27 balls. Gayle hit the winning runs six off Tom Curran over long-on as they sealed the issue with 11 balls to spare. Having scored the fastest half-century in IPL, Rahul once again underlined his credentials as an opener in shortest format with nine fours and two sixes as KXIP climbed to the top of the table with eight points from five games. This was also their first win at the Eden Gardens since 2012. KXIP were 96 for no loss in 8.2 overs, 31 runs ahead of the DLS par score, when rain halted the

Defeat against CSK rankles, says Robin Singh

Mumbai Indians coach Robin Singh says the one-wicket defeat to Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League opener still rankles, considering they had the returning outfit on the mat. In their last outing, MI broke a sequence of three successive losses with a big win over Royal Challengers Bangalore. Singh said he did not read much into those early reverses. "It is not a matter of concern because we were on the course of winning three matches consecutively. The one-wicket defeat against Chennai Super Kings still pinches because we had them on the mat. "We feel we went for edges but they never flew, can't say what went wrong. We got the act together and don't want to look back but forward. We are looking at the remaining matches and keen to give our hundred percent," said Singh. When asked about wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan's injury, Singh said that he has recovered. "He is a fine, energetic cricketer and recovered from the blow. He would be joining the practice session," said

World number one Rafael Nadal swept aside Grigor Dimitrov to ease into his 12th Monte Carlo Masters final with a 6-4, 6-1 victory today. The 31-year-old, who needs to win an 11th Monaco title to retain the number one ranking ahead of Roger Federer, will face either Kei Nishikori or Alexander Zverev in Sunday's final. "Every year is different and equally special," said Nadal, after beating Dimitrov for the 11th time in 12 meetings. "So I'll just focus on doing the things that I have to do to give me another chance tomorrow. That's it. "I don't want to think about another title yet, I just want to think about the way I have to play and try to be ready for it." Nadal came through a tight first set but always looked too strong for Dimitrov and raced through the second in half an hour. The top seed is bidding for an outright record 31st Masters title this week and extended his run of consecutive sets won on clay to 34. Nadal, playing his first ATP tournament since he retired from his ...

Kvitova, Pliskova give Czechs 2-0 lead over Germany

Victories by Petra Kvitova and Karolina Pliskova gave the Czech Republic a commanding 2-0 lead over hosts Germany in their Fed Cup semi-final today. Two-time Wimbledon champion Kvitova needed just over an hour for an emphatic 6-3, 6-2 win over Julia Goerges at the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart. Pliskova followed that up with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Angelique Kerber to put the Czechs in firm control going into Sunday's three ties -- two singles and one doubles rubber. The Czech Republic look well set to continue their impressive recent Fed Cup form having won the title five times in the last seven years. With the home crowd behind her, Goerges built up a 3-1 lead in the first set only for Kvitova to win the next five games and wrestle control of the match. In the second rubber, Kerber put in a strong performance, but lost her serve at the crucial moment to lose the first set 7-5. Pliskova calmly took what was her only chance to break Kerber in the second set with ice-cold precision to seal ...

ICC Meet: Chairman Manohar may agree to extension if elected unopposed

Shashank Manohar's extension as the chairman will be one of the key points of discussion as the member nations of the International Cricket Council (ICC) meet in Kolkata for its quarterly meeting starting tomorrow. Former BCCI president Manohar is ICC's first independent chairman and, in all likelihood, will get an extension during the Annual Conference scheduled in Dublin in June. According to highly-placed sources, the Nagpur-based advocate will not contest an election and will complete his full term of two years only if he is a unanimous choice. England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) outgoing chairman Giles Clarke has expressed his interest in the chairman's post but there is a big question mark whether he will be able to garner support. "To throw his hat in the ring, Clarke will need the support of two full member nations (England excluded). Bhuvi credits experience, better fitness for improvement

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has become a vital cog in the wheel for whichever team he plays, and the India and Sunrisers Hyderabad pacer says experience and superior fitness have made him an improved bowler. Bhuvneshwar, who made his ODI and T20 debut in 2012, has so far grabbed 90 wickets in 86 ODIs and 28 wickets in 26 T20s and has become the go-to man for skipper Virat Kohli. "The big change is experience, learning the things. At any stage, initially, you don't know much about those places or that environment, so (when) you keep playing you get to know, what the things are like there. Nothing is easy. So, yes experience - which I have gained over the last two-three years - really improved me as a bowler," the 28-year-old Meerut born player told PTI. "And the other thing is fitness, the foremost thing which can keep you going for so many years," he said. Asked whether he got any tips or advice from anybody, he said, "No, nothing, no special thing. I have been working in general,
