'Chief plotter' Warner will not captain Australia in future: CA

Declared the 'plotter-in-chief' in the ball-tampering scandal, David Warner will never be considered for captaincy after serving his one-year ban, Cricket Australia announced today. Following CA's investigation into the infamous incident in Cape Town, it has come to light that Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft knew what they were getting into but it was Warner who developed the "plan to attempt to artificially alter the condition of the ball". Smith still has a slim chance to captain Australia again but Warner will not be considered at all. "Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft will not be considered for team leadership positions until a minimum of 12 months after the conclusion of their respective suspensions from international and domestic cricket," said CA in a statement. "Any consideration of future leadership would be conditional on acceptance by fans and the public, form and authority among the playing group. David Warner will not be considered for team leadership positions in the ...

VAR leaving players and fans in the dark - Vardy

England striker Jamie Vardy believes the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) leaves players and fans with little idea of "what is going on" just three months before the system is to be used at the World Cup. Vardy's first-half strike had England on course for another fine World Cup warm-up friendly result against four-time world champions Italy on Tuesday, until the visitors were awarded a penalty three minutes from time on video review. German referee Deniz Aytekin overturned his original decision not to point to the spot when Federico Chiesa tumbled under the challenge of debutant James Tarkowski. Aytekin came to the side of the pitch to review the decision himself and took less than two minutes to change his mind before Lorenzo Insigne dispatched the spot-kick to earn a 1-1 draw for the visitors. However, Vardy believes the process still needs to be improved for those inside the stadium. "They say they are using it at the World Cup so we have used it tonight," said Vardy. "Most of

FIFA asked to probe Russian racism against France players

Anti-racism campaigners want FIFA to investigate the abuse of French players, including Paul Pogba, by Russian fans. Monkey chants could be heard from the crowd in St. Petersburg on Tuesday when black French players touched the ball in a friendly against Russia. The abuse was also audible on a TV broadcast after Pogba scored France's second goal in a 3-1 win. "There should be enough there for FIFA to initiate proceedings," Piara Powar, head of the anti-discrimination Fare Network, said Wednesday. The Fare Network helps FIFA investigate racism cases. French Sports Minister Laura Flessel also called for action. "Racism has no place on the soccer field," Flessel wrote on Twitter alongside a picture of the French team. "We should act together at a European and international level in order to stop this intolerable behavior." Flessel didn't comment directly on the chants at Tuesday's game. The case comes before Russia hosts the World Cup in June and July, and Fare said it highlights ...
