Hughes makes flying start as Southampton reach FA Cup semis

Mark Hughes enjoyed the ideal start to his Southampton reign as the struggling Premier League club reached the FA Cup semi-finals with a 2-0 win here today. Hughes was hired as Southampton manager this week to replace the sacked Mauricio Pellegrino and the former Saints striker had an immediate impact on his new team. Hughes' main goal is to help Southampton preserve their top-flight status and they dropped into the relegation zone on Saturday as Crystal Palace won in the league while the Saints were preparing for their quarter-final. Nevertheless, a trip to Wembley in the semi-finals could provide a welcome tonic as the new manager tries to make his presence felt. It was essential Southampton avoided following in the footsteps of Manchester City, West Ham and Bournemouth -- top-flight sides who had all perished against third tier giant-killers Wigan in the FA Cup this season. They achieved that aim thanks to second half goals from Pierre Emile Hojbjerg and Cedric Soares. Southampton .

IPL: KXIP to play first 3 games at Mohali, last 4 in Indore

The IPL Governing council has decided to swap the dates of Kings XI Punjab's home matches with the first three games being held in Mohali (in April) and the last four games in Indore (in May) owing to some logistical issues. As per the revised itinerary, KXIP will play in Mohali on (April 15, 19 and 23) instead of Indore. However Indore will benefit from the arrangement as they now have four matches in their kitty (May 4, 6, 12 and 14). The reason for this swap is because the Chandigarh airport will remain closed from May 12-31 owing to renovation work. "There were logistical difficulties that teams would have encountered had KXIP played their home games in Mohali in May. Therefore the IPL Governing Council has decided that the dates will be swapped and Indore will now host all their matches in May," acting president and IPL Governing Council member CK Khanna told PTI today.

Sabbir's 77 takes Bangladesh to 166/8 against India

Indian pacers undid the hardwork of their spinners as Bangladesh scored a competitive 166 for eight, riding on Sabbir Rahman's 50-ball 77 in the final of the Nidahas T20 Tri-Series here tonight. Off-spinner Washington Sundar (1/20 in 4 overs) and leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal (3/18 in 4 overs) were brilliant in the Powerplay but the duo of Vijay Shankar (0/48 in 4 overs) and Shardul Thakur (0/45 in 4 overs) leaked 93 runs between them on a good batting surface. While the Washington-Chahal duo bowled 20 dot balls between them with only one boundary, Shankar and Thakur conceded 10 boundaries and four sixes. Jaydev Unadkat (2/33) did come back well in his final over but Sabbir cleverly waited for the spinners to finish their quota as he launched a furious assault on the pacers during the back-10. Skipper Rohit Sharma taking a gamble by introducing both spinners inside the Powerplay overs instead of using an effective part-timer like Suresh Raina when Thakur and Shankar were being hit, ...

Indian women suffer 97 run defeat, lose series 3-0

Indian women suffered their most embarrassing series defeats in recent times as Australia completed a 3-0 rout with a comprehensive 97-run drubbing of the hosts in the three-match ODI series. Wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy smashed her way to a brilliant 133 off 115 balls with the Southern Stars piling up a massive 332 for 7. In reply, India started off well riding on Jemimah Rodrigues (42 off 41 balls) and Smriti Mandhana (52 off 42 balls)'s 101-run opening stand but their fight fizzled out as they were all out for 235 in 44.4 overs. Healy's maiden ODI hundred ensured that Australia's margin of victory only got bigger as India's campaign turned from bad to worse. The humiliating series defeat comes right after the BCCI announced hefty central contracts, making Mithali Raj and Co richest players in their sport. The World Cup semi-final victory last year looks like a distant memory and Australians have exacted a revenge beating the 'Women In Blue' in their own backyard. With Punam ...
