Rodchenkov to AP: Russian footballers immune from drug bans

Russian soccer players were protected from being caught doping under direct government orders that laboratory director Grigory Rodchenkov said he followed to ensure cheating was covered up. Outlining his involvement in soccer for the first time to The Associated Press, Rodchenkov claimed an instruction to "avoid any scandal" came from Vitaly Mutko, the former Russian sports minister who now serves as a deputy prime minister despite being implicated in a far-reaching doping controversy. "Russian footballers were immune from doping-control actions or sanctions," Rodchenkov said in response to questions through his lawyer from his hiding place in the United States. Rodchenkov fled Russia two years ago to confess to his role in a widespread doping cover-up in his homeland, notably at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and by track and field athletes. The focus is sharpening on doping practices in Russian soccer with the World Cup kicking off in Moscow in four months. Amid mounting evidence

Delhi would be grateful to Tiwary and Abhimanyu Easwaran (90) for chasing down a target of 267 with minimum fuss in 48 overs. Easwaran (10 fours, 109 balls) and Tiwary (10 fours, 2 sixes, 107 balls) added 131 runs for the third wicket to ensure a smooth passage for Ishant Sharma's team. They have hunkered down through a hurricane, fought their own governing body for better support and endured a heartbreaking loss to Canada in the 2014 Olympic final. Now the world-champion US womens ice hockey players are unified and confident of ending Canadas 16-year hold on the Olympic title at the Pyeongchang Winter Games. "The scariest thing is were even better than we were before," US forward Hilary Knight said. "What weve been through off the ice, I would hate to have to be the team to suit up against us." The agony at the core of their effort is a 3-2 over-time loss to Canada in the Sochi 2014 final after a rink-length attempt at an empty-net goal clanked off a post. Canada equalised in the final minute and won in extra time. "Just to bring it up puts a little fire in all of us," said US defender Monique Lamoureux-Morando. Iran's wrestling federation has said it will protest a decision to ban one of its athletes and the national coach for deliberately throwing a match to avoid fighting an Israeli opponent. Alireza Karimi Mashiani threw a match against his Russian opponent in the under-23 world championships in Poland in November to avoid fighting Israels Uri Kalashnikov in the next round. The Islamic republic does not recognise the Jewish state and forbids its sportsmen from competing against Israelis. On Friday, the United World Wrestling Disciplinary Chamber banned Karimi Mashiani from competition for six months, and his coach Hamidreza Jamshidi for two years. "The federation will protest the verdict," Iran Wrestling Federation president Rasoul Khadem said on state television later the same day. Khadem blamed the ban on pressure from the International Olympic Committee, which he said was itself "under the influence of big political and economic powers of the world". "During his six-month ban, Karimi ..

A confident Indian Arrows side will be raring to go against Aizawl FC who will take to the field under newly appointed coach Santosh Kashyap in their Hero I-League match here tomorrow. Arrows come into the game after a thrilling 2-1 win against Churchill Brothers FC Goa. It was one of the games of the season where the young side, trailing by a goal, scored twice in injury time to seal victory. "In football, you cannot plan the result. But Im very happy with the attitude and the victory because it is the first time in this competition that Indian Arrows have won a game which they were losing. Out of reckoning for a play-offs berth, defending champions ATK will hope to salvage pride when they lock horns with Mumbai City FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) here tomorrow. It has been an up and down season for Mumbai City FC as Alexandre Guimaraes' side has enjoyed good patches of form but haven't been consistent.
