Hyderabad, Saurashtra storm into quarters

Saurashtra trounced Ranji Trophy champions Vidarbha by eight wickets for a hat-trick of wins, helping them seal a quarterfinal berth in the Vijay Hazare Trophy here today. Hosts Hyderbad rode on pacer Mohammed Siraj's 5/37 to hammer Chhattisgarh by 84 runs and join Saurashtra in the last eight as Group D toppers. Saurashtra edged out Vidarbha on a better net run-rate for the second spot as it was heartbreak for the reigning Ranji champions who were leading the group with four successive wins before back-to-back defeats knocked them out of the competition. In a must win match, Vidrabha batsmen struggled to get a partnership going before being bundled out for 159 in 40.5 overs after Saurashtra captain Cheteshwar Pujara opted to field at the AOC Centre Thapar Stadium in Secunderabad. There is a lot to play for at the upcoming Asian Games in Jakarta as the winners of the men's and women's singles tennis will earn direct entry into the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The ITF today announced the introduction of six continental qualification places, approved by the IOC Executive Board, as part of the Tokyo 2020 Qualification System for tennis. The 2020 Olympic Tennis Event will feature five disciplines -- mens singles and doubles, womens singles and doubles, and mixed doubles. Each singles draw will comprise 64 players, with a maximum of four players per nation. There will be 56 direct acceptances as at previous Games, and eight ITF places, including the six Continental Qualification places. However, the players' ranking should be within the top 300 on the singles rankings of June 8, 2020, and the quota for that particular nation should not be filled by four direct acceptances. ITF president David Haggerty said: "The introduction of Continental Qualification places is a ...

It was redemption for the 31-year-old veteran, known as the "Flying Tomato" because of his red hair, who won gold in 2006 and 2010 and helped put the hipster sport on the map, but flopped in Sochi four years ago. "Oh man, that was awful and amazing at the same time. I knew I did a great ride and I was proud of that and I could walk away with my head high, but when they announced my score and I'd won, it crippled me," said the American. Austrias twin 2026 Olympic bid needs support of the population

Austrian sports minister Heinz-Christian Strache today voiced his conditional backing for Graz and Schladming to host the 2026 Winter Olympics if there is "the support of the population". The mayors of both venues last month announced they were planning a twin bid to stage the Games, but said they were not considering a referendum after people in the state of Tyrol voted against Innsbruck entering the race in October. However, Strache warned against any decision to force through a candidacy without the approval of the population. "There has to be a desire that is largely shared by the region and the people who live there. One cant go against the citizens," said Austria's deputy chancellor, who is also leader of the far-right Freedom Party. "Such a project must always be supported by the population," Strache said in an interview with APA news agency, without explicitly calling for another referendum. The International Olympic Committee has pledged to boost funding for the 2026 Winter ..
