Top seed Miranda advances into final of badminton tourney
Top seed Hubert Miranda of Mumbai Suburban District enjoyed an easy passage to the final defeating Austin DRozario of Pune District in two quick games at 21-3, 21-10 in a men's 65+ singles semi-finals match of the 'Badminton 45' Senior State Veterans Badminton Selection Tournament 2018, conducted by the Maharashtra Badminton Association and hosted by the Bombay Gymkhana. In the finals, Miranda will clash with Ashok Sharma, also of Mumbai Suburban District, who prevailed over Madanlal Behetwar of Akola District 21-8, 21-14 in the second semi-final. In the womens competition, Maria DSa of Greater Mumbai District, after some initial hesitancy, managed to find her rhythm and went on to complete a rather comfortable 21-13, 21-5 victory against Madhu Ahuja of Mumbai Suburban in the women 60+ singles semi-final encounter. Nagpur teenager Malvika Bansod and the seasoned Pratul Joshi claimed the top honours in the All India Senior Ranking Badminton Tournament by clinching the women's singles and men's singles titles here today. The 17-year-old Malvika culminated her giant-killing run by upstaging seventh-seed Vaishnavi Bhale 21-14, 21-17 in the final at the Sports Stadium. Malvika had earlier upstaged second seed Shriyanshi Pardeshi 21-15, 15-21, 21-7 in the semifinal. Top seed Pratul Joshi justified his billing in the men's singles with a hard-fought victory over 12th seed Kartik Jindal 21-15, 11-21, 21-18 in the final. North Korea to send 22 athletes to PyeongChang Winter Games
North Korea will send 22 athletes to compete in three sports at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games in South Korea.The two Korean teams will march together in the opening ceremony.The International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach made the announcement in the four-party meeting at the IOC headquarters here.The meeting was attended by the representatives from the Pyeongchang Olympic Organising Committee and national Olympic bodies of the two Koreas, reports the Yonhap News Agency.North Korea will also send 24 officials, including coaches, alongside the athletes in three sports and five disciplines.The last time, the two Koreas marched together was the 2007 Asian Winter Games in Changchun, China.North Korea has never participated in an Olympic Games in South Korea. The sixth and final round of the MRF FMSCI Indian National Rally Championship 2017, the MRF 43rd K-1000 Rally, is poised for a thrilling finish here tomorrow, with favourite and current points leader Gaurav Gill looking to claim his fifth championship title. Three-time Asia Pacific Rally Champion Gill (co-driver Musa Sherif) is sitting pretty on 75 points. However, Dean Mascarenhas, who has already sealed the INRC 3 category championship with 63 points, can still claim the overall championship if he wins this round and Gill finishes no higher than 11th place. Tied 3-3, Satender played with flair and determination to stave off his compatriot and win the crucial bout 4-0 to help his side seal a spot in the semifinals. Down 2-3 and looking at an imminent defeat, Mumbai's icon player Sakshi Malik kept them alive, thwarting a stiff challenge from Sarita Mor to make it 3-3 in the tie. Singh scored from the set-piece in the 60th minute to give the Kerala side their second win of the season. The first half was mostly dominated by the home side and forward Jean-Micheal Joachim's audacious chip off a pass by his skipper Soosairaj landed on the roof of the net.
