Our death over bowling a concern, says Iyer

A disappointed Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer said bowling at the death overs is a major concern for his team which was thoroughly outplayed by Mumbai Indians in a return leg IPL clash here Thursday. The hosts, who were on a roll with a hattrick of victories, suffered a 40-run defeat against Mumbai Indians after being restricted to 128 for nine while chasing 169 here. It was Delhi's third loss out of the four matches that the hosts played at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium this season. "It is important for us to win the home games. Especially on these wickets. We lost the toss as well and they outplayed us in all three departments. Credit to them," Iyer said. "A lot of concern as far as the death overs were concerned. It wasn't easy to bat in the second innings. The ball was stopping. It was difficult for the new batters. The last three overs were game changing," he added, referring to the 51 runs that the hosts conceded in the last three overs. Iyer said they gave away 20 runs more

Pandya brothers, Chahar set-up resounding win for Mumbai

The big-hitting Pandya brothers -- Hardik and Krunal -- and young leg-spinner Rahul Chahar set up a comprehensive 40-run win for Mumbai Indians over Delhi Daredevils in a return leg of the IPL here on Thursday. Hardik (32 off 15) and Krunal (37 not out off 26) propelled Mumbai to 168 for five after the team lost its way in the middle overs. Chasing 169 was going to be tough on a slow and low Feroz Shah Kotla wicket and it turned out to be exactly that as Delhi squandered a solid platform of 48 for no loss in six overs to eventually lose the game by a big margin. The hosts ended with 128 for nine in 20 overs. The victory took Mumbai Indians to the second spot on the points table, while Delhi remained in the third spot. Nineteen-year-old Chahar made the difference for Mumbai in the bowling department by removing the dangerous opening duo of Shikhar Dhawan (35 off 22) and Prithvi Shaw (20 off 24). His outstanding figures read three for 19 in four overs and he continues his upward graph

Djokovic, Nadal into Monte Carlo quarters as Medvedev topples Tsitsipas

Top seed Novak Djokovic and 11-time champion Rafael Nadal showed no mercy in dominating wins to power into the Monte Carlo Masters quarter-finals on Thursday. Djokovic extended his winning streak against US players with a 6-3, 6-0 defeat of Taylor Fritz. The two-time tournament champion has now won nine in a row over Americans since losing at Wimbledon in 2016 to Sam Querrey. "It was very challenging to play in these (windy) conditions," Djokovic said. "Taylor just flattens the ball. "We had five, six close games in the first set, I just managed to break his resistance midway through. "After that, things went on my side and I felt more comfortable. "This was one of these days where you just have to hang in there and try to put an extra ball back in the court - that was enough." Nadal repeated last year's semi-final win over Grigor Dimitrov, beating the Bulgarian for the 12th time, 6-4, 6-1. "I'm very, very happy, this is an important victory for me," the second seed said after winning

Pandya brothers propel Mumbai to 168/5

Pandya brothers led Mumbai Indians' recovery with a 54-run stand, powering the visitors to a challenging 168 for five against Delhi Capitals in a second leg clash of the Indian Premier League here on Thursday. Hardik (32 off 15) and Krunal (37 not out off 26) provided a much needed late onslaught by hammering 51 runs off the last 18 balls to put Mumbai in a strong position. This was after Delhi spinners Amit Mishra (1/18) and Axar Patel (1/17) tightened the screws on Mumbai with a tidy effort. Considering the slow nature of the surface, Delhi will have to bat really well to chase down 169. With teams batting second winning all three previous games at the Kotla, Rohit Sharma's decision to bat first surprised even opposition skipper Shreyas Iyer. On the slow and low surface, Mumbai made a measured start with Rohit's classy cover drive being the only boundary in the first three overs which yielded just 16 runs. In the following over, a mishit for four off Chris Morris ensured 8000 T20 ...

I cannot stop Messi alone, admits Van Dijk

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk insists he will not face a personal duel against Lionel Messi in his side's Champions League semi-final against Barcelona. Van Dijk is in contention for player of the year awards in England thanks to his transformative effect on Liverpool since becoming the world's most expensive defender when moving from Southampton for ?75 million ($98 million) last January. However, the Dutchman believes a collective effort is required to halt Messi, who has scored 45 goals this season, two of which helped Barca beat Manchester United 4-0 on aggregate to progress to the last four. "I think he's the best player in the world but we'll see. It's going to be a great match-up for all of us," said Van Dijk, who netted himself as Liverpool thrashed Porto 4-1 on Wednesday to complete a 6-1 aggregate victory. "It's about doing it all together, it's never one-v-one, it's never just me against a particular striker. "It's always us against everyone and I think that's the only

Barcelona to face Chelsea and Iniesta's Kobe in Japan

Barcelona will travel to Japan to play pre-season games against Chelsea and Andres Iniesta's J-League club Vissel Kobe in July, the Spanish giants announced Thursday. The runaway La Liga leaders take on English side Chelsea in Saitama on July 23 and on July 27 face Kobe, the club Barca legend Iniesta joined last year after helping the Catalans scoop 32 trophies in a glittering career. Barcelona's main sponsor Rakuten, the Japanese retailer, is organising both games. "It's wonderful that we can play Barcelona at our stadium," said Iniesta, who joined Kobe last May for a reported $30 million a year and plays alongside former Barca and Spain team mate David Villa. "I want this match to bring out the best of us." Barcelona, who in midweek booked their place in the semi-finals of the European Champions League, have not played in Japan since they beat Argentina's River Plate 3-0 in the 2015 Club World Cup final at Yokohama. Chelsea, beaten finalists at the 2012 Club World Cup in Japan, are .

Djokovic into Monte Carlo quarters as Medvedev topples Tsitsipas

Top seed Novak Djokovic continued his win streak against US players as he reached the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Taylor Fritz on Thursday. Two-time tournament champion Djokovic has now won nine in a row over US players since losing at Wimbledon 2016 to Sam Querrey. The world number one will be playing his ninth quarter-final here from 13 appearances at his home event; the win came a round after he claimed his 850th career victory against Philipp Kohlschreiber this week. Fritz came to the court after defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Diego Schwartzman. Djokovic turned in a steady performance with a dozen each of winners and unforced errors, while his opponent committed nearly 30 unforced errors in 68 minutes. Barcelona against weekend Champions League games - Bartomeu

FC Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has spoken out against the idea of staging Champions League games at the weekend, as suggested in a recent proposal to reform the competition. "Barcelona's position is clear: national league games must be held at the weekend, and Champions League games during the week," he said in an interview with German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung on Thursday. Bartomeu did offer broad support for Champions League reform, however, saying that the competition had to develop. The controversial reform plans put forward by the European Club Association (ECA) in March envisaged dramatic changes to the Champions League from 2024, ranging from the introduction a three-tiered system to the scheduling of weekend fixtures. The plans prompted widespread criticism, most notably from the Europe's major domestic leagues, amid fears that they represented the introduction of a European Super League via the back door. Bartomeu, who sits on the executive board of the ECA,
