India will be aiming to complete a clean sweep when they take on a battered West Indies in the third T20 International here Sunday even while looking to test the bench strength. For the cricket loving fans in Chennai, they will certainly miss their 'favourite son' Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is not a part of the T20 squad. Having sealed the series with a comprehensive win in the second T20I at Lucknow riding on skipper Rohit Sharma's brilliant ton, the home team would look to give reserve bench players like Shreyas Iyer, MS Washington Sundar and the uncapped Shahbaz Nadeem an opportunity before it embarks on the tour of Australia. The selectors decided to rest pacemen Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav and wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav for Sunday's game, allow them to be in the best physical condition ahead of the tour to Australia. Medium-pacer Siddarth Kaul has been added to the squad. The pitch at Chepauk has been on the slower side in recent games but the square prepared for Sunday's game is
Darren Cahill, the coach of world number one and French Open champion Simona Halep, said Friday he will take a break from tennis in 2019 for family reasons. The 53-year-old Australian helped Romanian star Halep to a maiden Grand Slam triumph at Roland Garros in June as well as a year-ending world top spot ro crown their four-year partnership. He had previously coached Lleyton Hewitt and Andre Agassi. "I would like to announce that Simona and I will not be continuing our partnership in 2019 purely for family reasons on my part," Cahill wrote on Instagram. "I'd like to thank Simona for the last 4 amazing years. Her understanding, personality, work ethic, generosity and professionalism made it a pleasure to stand by her side as her coach. Basically, I had the dream job." Halep, 27, thanked Cahill for his work. "Thank you so much @darren_cahill for all your hard work and incredible support over the past four years," she tweeted. "I was lucky to have you and what a journey we had.
Sebastian Vettel made light of his disappointment at missing out on beating Lewis Hamilton to a fifth world title on Friday with an unexpected message on Ferrari team radio. The four-time champion spoke during second practice for the Brazilian Grand Prix where rivals Mercedes topped the times, Valtteri Bottas beating Hamilton by 0.003 seconds. Vettel was third fastest in the session, complaining of what was originally thought to be problems with his car's front suspension. He supplied additional impromptu detail when he told the team: "There's something loose between my legs. "Apart from the obvious. Something is flying around my feet. I'd be proud if it was what you think it is, but it's not." The mischievous Vettel later joked during an interview that the Interlagos circuit was bewitched and had a spell cast on it. He declined to elaborate on his comments later.
As Jurgen Klopp tries to maintain Liverpool's challenge for the Premier League title, the need to sort out his midfield is becoming an increasingly pressing issue. A home match against bottom club Fulham on Sunday may just offer the opportunity to start to put that right by giving both Naby Keita and Fabinho crucial game time to build momentum and confidence. Both players were signed at great expense during the summer with a view to strengthening Liverpool's midfield options. Keita was seen as a replacement for the attacking guile of Philippe Coutinho while Fabinho was viewed as the player to prove a defensive shield following Emre Can's departure. Neither has yet managed to establish themselves as a powerful presence in England, with Reds boss Klopp relying largely on the players used last season. Klopp has suggested both signings need time to settle in a new country, with Guinea international Keita arriving from German club RB Leipzig, and Brazilian Fabinho joining from French Ligue
Manchester United turned to Jose Mourinho as the antidote to their "noisy neighbours" Manchester City finally achieving their long-held goal of hiring Pep Guardiola as manager in 2016. Reunited in England's northwest after two confrontational years on either side of the Barcelona-Real Madrid rivalry, where Mourinho ended Guardiola's three seasons of La Liga dominance, United clearly hoped the feisty Portuguese could again get under the Catalan's skin. But now in their third seasons in charge, Guardiola and Mourinho's reigns have instead seen a chasm open up with the blue half of Manchester now the dominant side of the city. Win the Manchester derby on Sunday and City will already be 12 points clear of United just 12 games into the new season, a gap that has gradually widened in each of the past three years. The season before their arrival, only City's superior goal difference saw them pip United to fourth place in the Premier League and Champions League qualification. Despite a ...
Lucas Torreira has been at Arsenal just a matter of months but the tough-tackling midfielder already looks like the kind of player the club has been missing for years. The Uruguay international will make only his seventh Premier League start when Wolves visit the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, yet his importance to Unai Emery's rapidly improving team is clear. Operating in central midfield, Torreira has offered a combative presence, providing his back four with protection while his use of the ball has been similarly impressive. Other players in Emery's line-up may have provided more spectacular moments during the Gunners' 15-game unbeaten run. However, it is the contribution of Torreira and Granit Xhaka, transformed from the inconsistent player of recent seasons, that have given reason to believe this Arsenal side has the steel to sustain their early charge. The pair have instilled a balance in the team that was lacking for long periods during the final years of Arsene Wenger's ...
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola raised the prospect Friday of soccer authorities punishing the Premier League champions over attempts to circumvent financial fair play rules. City is leaving Guardiola to field questions about the leaked internal correspondence published by European media outlets, while executives decline comment. The club has not disputed the authenticity of internal messages showing how it used companies linked to the Abu Dhabi ownership to boost revenue in an attempt to curb losses and comply with UEFA regulations. "If there's something wrong we'll be punished," Guardiola said at a news conference ahead of Sunday's derby against Manchester United. City, which has been owned by Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Mansour for a decade, was punished by UEFA in 2014 for breaching the "Financial Fair Play" program. The settlement agreement eventually saw the club only forfeit 20 million euros (USD 23 million) in Champions League prize money. UEFA this week has not said how aware it
For the first time since 1970, there will be no Brazilian driver in a Formula One race in Brazil. So fans in the racing-crazy South American nation, home to eight F1 titles by three champions, are putting all their hopes on two young test drivers who will have a bigger role in the series next year. Pietro Fittipaldi, the 22-year-old grandson of former F1 champion Emerson Fittipaldi, was announced Friday as test driver for Haas starting after the season-ending Abu Dhabi GP. Sergio Sette Camara, the 20-year-old who is the only Latin American driver in Formula 2, will be McLaren's test driver next year. Sette Camara is sixth in the F2 standings with one race to go this season, while Pietro Fittipaldi drove as a part-time driver in the IndyCar Series. Both had their seasons marred by crashes that forced them to miss races. Despite not having the same impressive results as some of the former Brazilian drivers before they reached F1, Sette Camara and Pietro Fittipaldi are the closest the ...
Pakistan beat New Zealand by six wickets in the second day-night international in Abu Dhabi on Friday but the match was overshadowed by a worrying injury to opening batsman Imam-ul-Haq who was taken to hospital after being hit on the head by a short ball. Imam, on 16, was forced to retire after a short delivery from fast bowler Lockie Ferguson hit the grille of his helmet, making him dizzy before he fell to the ground. His eyes were closed but he did not lose consciousness. Team management originally said that the 22-year-old would undergo CT scans and be monitored for the next 48 hours. However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) later said that scans had shown that the player had suffered no damage. "Imam-ul-Haq all scans clear. He joined the team and will remain under observation of Team Physio," the PCB tweeted. On the pitch, pace bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi recorded his career best bowling while opener Fakhar Zaman hit a half century to help Pakistan to a series-levelling ...

Uttar Pradesh bowler Shiva Singh who created a media storm with his bizarre 360 delivery on Thursday has said that the reasons are still unclear to him as to why his delivery was called a dead ball while adding that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should accept his bowling action. In a telephonic interview to ANI, Singh said, "I believe the BCCI should accept my bowling action. There should not be any restriction as well. There are many batsmen who flout rules and regulations. What about them. There is nothing wrong in my variation, to be honest.""I have used the same action in the past too in local matches. However, the umpire never pronounced it a dead ball. I did the same during the Vijay Hazare trophy as well. It was not considered an invalid delivery then as well," Singh added.Singh was playing at the U-23 CK Nayudu trophy for his side Uttar Pradesh against Bengal when the umpire immediately called a dead ball after he bowled the delivery.

The hitting was incredible and the sixes unbelievably monstrous, making Harmanpreet Singh the first Indian woman to record a century in the format and propelling her team to a 34-run win over New Zealand in the World T20 opener Friday. The 29-year-old smashed 103 off 51 balls and her carnage included eight sixes, some of them towering, and seven boundaries. Opting to bat after the coin landed in her favour at the Providence Stadium, Harmanpreet and Jemimah Rodrigues (59 off 45 balls) added 134 runs for the fourth wicket to guide India to an imposing 194 for five in the stipulated 20 overs. In reply, New Zealand were stopped at 160 for nine. "good game but we still have a long way to go. (Regarding my batting) I needed to settle down," Harmanpreet said after the convincing win.
