Kothari wins World Billiards title

India's Sourav Kothari defeated Peter Gilchrist of Singapore 1134-944 of to clinch the 2018 WBL World Billiards Championship title here Friday. The former national and Asian Billiards champion was pipped at the post for the coveted World Billiards crown on two occasions in the last two years, including a loss to Gilchrist in the 2016 final in Bengaluru. Earlier in the semis, Kothari steered his way to a dramatic victory in the dying minutes of the game over 6-time World and defending champion David Causier of England by 1317-1246. The script of the semifinal match was nothing short of a fairy tale for Kothari who at one stage of the match trailed by more than 500 points with almost no hope of getting back into the match, given Causier's uncanny capacity of relentless high break building and scoring.

Crowd trouble spills over to road after Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal U-18 football match

Crowd trouble came to fore in a match between Maidan arch-rivals Mohun Bagan and East Bengal Friday, as the fans of the two clubs spilled over to the road throwing traffic out of the gear before police took control of the situation. After East Bengal beat Mohun Bagan 2-0, riding on goals from Subhonil Ghosh and Silvana Kima in a U-18 Youth League at the latter's home ground, tempers flared up, leading to a crowd trouble. It went out of control when some East Bengal fans stamped on a Mohun Bagan flag and hurled expletives. The trouble spilled over to the roads near the ground in the heart of the city throwing traffic out of gear for some time before police came in.

Saina loses to Tzu Ying again, now at French Open

Olympic medallist Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal's impressive run at the French Open ended with yet another loss to world no 1 Tai Tzu Ying, this time at the quarterfinals of the BWF World Tour Super 750 tournament here on Friday. Saina looked in good touch initially but couldn't match the pace of Tzu Ying later on to squander four game points and lose the opening game. FIFA put plans for lucrative new Club World Cup, Nations League on hold

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has delayed any decision over his plans for a lucrative new Club World Cup and global Nations League amid widespread opposition, instead setting up a taskforce to further look into the proposals. Speaking at a press conference in the Rwandan capital Kigali, where the FIFA Council has been meeting, Infantino said the taskforce will present "concrete proposals" at a meeting in Miami next March. The plans have been harshly criticised by opponents who say the international calendar is already overcrowded and have accused the FIFA president of using the projects to help win votes for re-election in June next year. India A completed a 3-0 clean sweep against their Australian counterparts with a 37-run win in the third and the final T20 here Friday. Electing to bat, India A put on a healthy 154/8 on the board in their alloted 20 overs with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur top scoring with 41 off 27 balls. Former champions ATK defeated title holders Chennayin FC 2-1 in a keenly-contested Indian Super League match to register their first home win of the season here on Friday. J&K Guv orders probe into alleged maltreatment of under-16 cricket team

Governor Satya Pal Malik Friday ordered an inquiry into the alleged maltreatment of the players of Jammu and Kashmir's under-16 cricket team by the state's cricket association while they were travelling from Srinagar to Amritsar. According to media reports, the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) had Friday taken the team from Srinagar to Jammu-- en route to Amritsar-- in a bus and lodged them in a 3-star hotel there, while the board authorities themselves travelled by air and stayed in 5-star hotels. Taking serious note of the reports, the Governor, while ordering an inquiry into the whole issue, directed the JKCA authorities to ensure the best possible facilities for the players, both within and outside the state, an official spokesman said. FIFA announce increased prize money for women's World Cup

FIFA are to double the prize money on offer at the women's World Cup in time for next year's tournament in France, president Gianni Infantino confirmed on Friday. Speaking at the end of a FIFA Council meeting in the Rwandan capital Kigali, Infantino confirmed an overall contribution of $50 million for the 24 participating nations. This is, he said, "more than three times the amount paid in 2015," when the competition was held in Canada. "Concretely this means a 100 percent increase in prize money from 15 to $30 million," Infantino added.
