Fire breaks out at Sydney Airport as Qantas flight makes emergency landing

An engine failure on a passenger plane taking off from Sydney, Australia on Friday prompted the aircraft to circle before a safe emergency landing, the airline Qantas said. At the same time, a grass fire broke out along one side of a runway, Sydney Airport said in a statement. It was not known if the two events were linked. The fire has been brought under control, but flight delays are expected. Qantas did not say how many passengers were on board the twin jet Boeing 737-800 bound for Brisbane when the engine failed with a loud bang. No injuries were reported. We understand this would have been a distressing experience for customers and we will be contacting all customers this afternoon to provide support," Qantas Chief Pilot Captain Richard Tobiano said in a statement. Activists should turn down heat: Australia PM after US consulate attack

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese urged activists on both sides of the Israel-Palestinian debate to turn the heat down after the US Consulate in Sydney was vandalised on Monday. CCTV footage showed a person wearing a dark hoodie using a small sledgehammer to smash nine holes in the reinforced glass windows of the building in North Sydney after 3 am, a police statement said. Two inverted red triangles, seen by many as a symbol of Palestinian resistance, were also painted on the front of the building. Albanese urged people to have respectful political debate and discourse. People are traumatised by what is going on in the Middle East, particularly those with relatives in either Israel or in the Palestinian Occupied Territories, Albanese told reporters. And I just say, again, reiterate my call to turn the heat down and measures such as painting the US consulate do nothing to advance the cause of those who have committed what is, of course, a crime to damage property, Albanes

AUS vs PAK 3rd Test preview: Focus on David Warner's farewell at SCG

The leadup to the third test between Australia and Pakistan at David Warner's home Sydney Cricket Ground was always going to be about the opening batter himself playing his final test in the sport's traditional format. Warner has helped to hype what amounts to a match with little really on the line for the home side Australia has already clinched the three-test series with victories in Perth and Melbourne. The visitors still have something to play for the last time Pakistan beat Australia in a test Australia was 1985 at the SCG. Warner announced during a New Year's Day news conference that he will also add one-day internationals to his retirement list. But in typical Warner fashion, he said he'd make a comeback at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy if asked. He said the time was right to conclude his ODI career following Australia's recent World Cup triumph in India, where he was the champion team's leading run-scorer. Warner will continue to play Twenty20 cricket for Australia, at .

Sydney blanketed by smoke for a 4th day due to hazard reduction burning

Sydney was blanketed under thick wood smoke for a fourth consecutive day on Thursday due to hazard reduction burns in preparation for the wildfire season. Australia's most populous city after Melbourne has recorded some of the world's worst air quality readings since the controlled burning of fuel loads in the surrounding landscapes began on Sunday. Fire authorities have only carried out 14% of planned hazard reduction burns across New South Wales state as of this week and are attempting to catch up before what is forecast to be a hot and dry Southern Hemisphere summer. New South Wales Rural Fire Service Inspector Ben Shepherd said the burns were suspended on Thursday and Friday because of excessive pollution levels and that Sydney's air was expected to clear soon. It's mostly due to the smoke, Shepherd said of the postponements. For the next 48 hours, we'll give this smoke a chance to clear without fire agencies adding additional smoke to it, Shepherd added. Rain had prevented .
