China keeps up military pressure on Taiwan, sends 43 planes and 7 ships

Taiwan said on Wednesday that China sent 43 military aircraft and seven ships near the self-ruled island, the latest sign that Beijing plans no let-up in its campaign of harassment, threats and intimidation. Taiwan's Defence Ministry said the figure was current for the 24 hours up to 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday and that 37 of the aircraft had crossed the median line in the Taiwan Strait, which China no longer recognises as an informal divider between the sides. It said Taiwan had monitored the situation, scrambled jet fighters, dispatched ships and activated land-based missile systems, all standard responses to Chinese military activities, which include crossing into Taiwan's air defense identification zone but not into its actual airspace. Such Chinese maneuvers have become frequent and aggressive since then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in August 2022. China suspended military communication with the US to show its displeasure over her trip to Taiwan, which Beijing ...

Taiwan watching Hamas-Israel war for lessons as it faces intimidation

Taiwan is closely watching the war in the Middle East sparked by the unprecedented attack on Israel by Hamas militants from Gaza for lessons amid what the self-governing island says is a campaign of intimidation and threats by China. Hamas staged a stunning and massive incursion into Israel last weekend, killing hundreds in Israel and dragging dozens into Gaza as hostages. In retaliation, Israel's increasingly destructive airstrikes in Gaza have flattened entire city blocks. The latest conflict, which has claimed at least 2,400 lives on both sides, is expected to escalate. Taiwanese Defence Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng said on Thursday that the Hamas-Israel war "blew up so suddenly, prompting Taiwan to up its ability to forecast possible threats. We've established a working group to study and ... reinforce the importance of collecting intelligence, he said ahead of a meeting of the legislature. Peace only option to resolve political differences: Taiwan Prez on Beijing

Peace between Taiwan and China is the only option, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen said Tuesday, while strongly asserting the self-governing island's defences against Beijing's threats to invade. Tsai said in a National Day address that the international community views stability in the Taiwan Strait as an indispensable component of global security and prosperity. China claims Taiwan as its own territory and has been increasingly sending ships and warplanes across the Taiwan Strait in an effort to intimidate the population of 23 million, who strongly favour the status-quo of de-facto independence. Tsai's Democratic Progressive Party will seek to maintain power in elections next year against the Nationalists, who officially support unification between the sides that divided amid civil war in 1949. "Let me reiterate that peace is the only option across the Taiwan Strait," said Tsai, who will step down after two terms in office. Maintaining the status quo, as the largest common ...

US wants to cut Ukraine aid, boost Taiwan's. But it is tied to Kyiv's

To Rep. Mike Collins, China is a bigger threat to the United States than Russia. So the Georgia Republican has voted against providing military aid to Ukraine as he advocates for doing more to arm Taiwan, the self-governed island that's at risk of military aggression from Beijing. For Collins and other Republican lawmakers, Taiwan and Ukraine are effectively rivals for a limited pool of U.S. military assistance. But that's not necessarily how Taiwan and many of its supporters see it. They view Taiwan's fate as closely linked to that of Ukraine as it struggles to push back a Russian invasion. They say China is watching closely to see if the United States has the political stamina to support an ally in a prolonged, costly war. The U.S. aid to Ukraine also has led to weapons manufacturers stepping up production something that could benefit Taiwan in a clash with China. Ukraine's survival is Taiwan's survival. Ukraine's success is Taiwan's success, Taiwan's diplomat in the U.S., Hsiao

Taiwan, India nurtured 'natural and reliable partnership': Taiwanese Envoy

Taiwan and India may be thousands of miles apart but the shared commitment to democracy, freedom and the rule of law is instrumental in joint efforts to further deepen the bilateral ties, Taipei's de-facto Ambassador Baushuan Ger has said. The envoy also said that Taiwan is looking forward to joining hands with India and other like-minded partners to strengthen the global supply chain and safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and Indo-Pacific. Without naming China, the envoy said Taiwan, confronted by "unceasing cross-Strait military intimidation and grey-zone threats", has continued to strengthen its self-defence capabilities and has consistently strived to serve as a "force for good". His comments last night at an event ahead of the Taiwanese National Day on October 10 came amid China ramping up its military muscle-flexing around Taiwan, a self-ruled island of more than 23 million people. "Over the years Taiwan and India have nurtured a natural and reliable ...

Typhoon Koinu heads toward southern China, Hong Kong; 1 dead in Taiwan

A typhoon headed toward southern China and Hong Kong on Friday after bringing record-breaking winds and leaving one dead in Taiwan. Typhoon Koinu was weakening as it headed west across the South China Sea toward China's Guangdong province, the China Meteorological Administration said. It was forecast to turn to the southwest in waters off the coast by Sunday. The storm was about 370 kilometres (230 miles) from Hong Kong on Friday morning and moving at about 10 kilometres (6 miles) per hour, the city government's Hong Kong Observatory said. Hong Kong was hit by heavy rains about one month ago that killed at least two people and caused widespread flooding. Ferry service was suspended in parts of Guangdong province, and the city of Guangzhou cancelled some flights and trains. One person was killed by flying glass in the Taiwanese city of Taichung on Thursday and more than 300 others were injured around the island, Taiwan's fire department said. Oz lawmakers who visit Taiwan being utilized by separatists: Chinese envoy

China's ambassador to Australia on Thursday criticised Australian politicians who visit Taiwan, saying they are being utilized by separatists on the self-governing island. Ambassador Xiao Qian was commenting in Sydney after an Australian parliamentary delegation visited Taiwan this week, and as a former prime minister plans to deliver a speech in Taipei next month. China considers Taiwan to be part of its territory. Xiao said Australian parliamentarians and former prime ministers who visit Taiwan carry political significance. It might be easily utilised by the political forces in Taiwan for their independent forces movement, for their secession movement, and I don't want to see that happen, Xiao told reporters. I hope they will stick to the one-China policy' in words and indeed, refrain from engaging with Taiwan in whichever form or capacity so that they will not be politically utilized by people in the island with political motives, Xiao said. The one-China policy holds that the .

Taiwan launches its first domestically made submarine for testing

Taiwan's president launched the island's first domestically made submarine for testing Thursday at a port in Kaohsiung. The submarine, if successful in its tests, will be a major breakthrough for Taiwan in shipbuilding and design. In the past, a domestic made submarine was considered impossible, but today a submarine designed and built by our countrymen is in front of you, said President Tsai Ing-wen at the launch ceremony. It is the concrete realization of our resolution to protect" Taiwan. The process was torturous, said Cheng Wen-lon, head of Taiwan's CSBC Corporation, which led the constructions of the submarine. But its completion marks an important milestone in Taiwan's strategy of adopting asymmetric warfare. Although we have worked quietly the past several years, it doesn't mean the process was very smooth," he said at the ceremony held in CSBC's shipyard. After years of construction and design, the prototype will begin a test in the harbor before being tested in the ...

China accuses Taiwan of using economic, trade issues to seek independence

The Chinese government on Wednesday accused Taiwan's ruling party of seeking independence, a day after the self-governing island's president lobbied for Australia's support in joining a regional trade pact. Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, also said the recent Chinese military drills around Taiwan were held to combat the arrogance of Taiwan independence separatist forces. China claims Taiwan, an island about 160 kilometres (100 miles) off its east coast, as its territory. The two split during the civil war that brought the Communists to power in China in 1949, with the losing Nationalists setting up their own government in Taiwan. Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, meeting with six visiting Australian lawmakers on Tuesday, sought their country's support for Taiwan's bid to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, an 11-nation free trade agreement. The Australian parliamentary delegation discussed strengthening economic

Australian lawmakers call for warmer relations with 'self-ruled' Taiwan

On a visit to Taiwan, a delegation of six Australian lawmakers called on Tuesday for warmer relations with the self-ruled island increasingly threatened by Beijing. The visit comes as Australia has been working at recalibrating its relationship with China, which had been tense in the past few years over disputes on the origin of COVID-19. China in response had imposed tariff barriers on several Australian exports, such as barley. Paul Fletcher, a lawmaker with Australia's Liberal Party, lauded the fact that the lawmaker delegation crossed party lines. The two major parties in Australia are both represented and we are here to further the warm relationship between Australia and Taiwan, Fletcher said. They also discussed strengthening economic cooperation with Taiwan, particularly in clean energy, and expressed an interest in Taiwan's semi-conductor industry. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory. Taiwan, with a population of 23 million compared to China's 1.4 billion, has ne

Taiwan factory fire leaves at least 5 dead, more than 100 injured

A fire and subsequent explosions at a golf ball factory in southern Taiwan killed at least five people and injured more than 100 others, and five people are still missing. The fire began on Friday night at the factory in Pingtung county and raged overnight. Authorities said rescuers were still looking for four factory workers and one firefighter who remained unaccounted for. More than 100 people were taken to the hospital with injuries. The cause of the fire was under investigation, Chou Chun-mi, magistrate of Pingtung county, said in a Facebook post. Facing the grief of the family members, I could not say anything except to bow deeply, apologise, and express my deepest condolences, she said in the post, after visiting the funeral home and meeting with victims' families. Authorities said that natural gas may have contributed to the explosions, which occurred as firefighters were attempting to put out the fire.
