NASA Curiosity rover analysing Mars rocks again

NASA's Curiosity rover is analysing drilled samples on Mars in one of its onboard labs for the first time in more than a year, the US space agency said. The rover drilled its last scheduled rock sample in October 2016. On May 20, a technique called "feed extended drilling" allowed Curiosity to drill its first rock sample since October 2016. On May 31, an additional technique called "feed extended sample transfer" successfully trickled rock powder into the rover for processing by its mineralogy laboratory. Delivery to its chemistry laboratory will follow in the week ahead. "This was no small feat. It represents months and months of work by our team to pull this off," said Jim Erickson, project manager of the Mars Science Laboratory mission, which is led by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena in the US. "JPL's engineers had to improvise a new way for the rover to drill rocks on Mars after a mechanical problem took the drill offline in December 2016," said Erickson. Testing of ..

Wireless system can power devices inside our body

Scientists have developed a new way to power the devices implanted deep within the human body and wirelessly communicate with them, paving the way for new ways to deliver drugs, monitor internal conditions, and treat diseases. The implants are powered by radio frequency waves, which can safely pass through human tissues. In animal tests, researchers showed that the waves can power devices located 10 centimeters deep in tissue, from a distance of one metre. "Even though these tiny implantable devices have no batteries, we can now communicate with them from a distance outside the body. This opens up entirely new types of medical applications," said Fadel Adib, an assistant professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US. Since they do not require a battery, the devices can be tiny. In this study, the researchers tested a prototype about the size of a grain of rice, but they anticipate that it could be made even smaller. "Having the capacity to communicate with these systems

Washington State sues online titans over political ads

The US state of Washington today announced it was suing Google and Facebook for not abiding by local law requirements regarding keeping records of political ads and their backers. Campaign finance laws in that state call on ad sellers to keep track of who is behind ads and how much is spent, and make the information available to the public, Washington attorney general Bob Ferguson said in a release. Suits filed in state court accuse Facebook and Google of failing to meet these obligations since the year 2013. "Washington's political advertising disclosure laws apply to everyone, whether you are a small-town newspaper or a large corporation," Ferguson said in the release. In the last decade, Washington candidates and political committees reported about USD 3.4 million in payments to Facebook and USD 1.5 million to Google related to advertising, according to the state attorney general. Facebook gave phone makers broad access to data on users, friends: NYT

Facebook has formed data-sharing partnerships with 60 cellphone makers, including Apple and Microsoft, giving them access to information of users and even their friends, a media report has claimed, weeks after the social media faced massive backlash for improperly sharing personal data of up to 87 million people. The New York Times yesterday revealed the partnerships, shedding new light on the social media giant's behaviour related to customer data in the wake of a scandal involving the British political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica. Facebook, which was founded in 2004, has reached data-sharing partnerships with at least 60 device makers including Apple, Amazon, BlackBerry, Microsoft and Samsung over the last decade, starting before Facebook apps were widely available on smartphones, company officials were quoted as saying by the report. Quantum-safe blockchain platform developed

Russian scientists have developed a method that could protect blockchains from being attacked by quantum computers. The researchers from the Russian Quantum Center in Moscow developed a solution to the quantum-era blockchain challenge, using quantum key distribution (QKD). The blockchain is a distributed ledger platform that allows consensus in a large decentralised network of parties who do not trust each other. Transactions are accountable and transparent, making it useful for a variety of applications from smart contracts and finance, to manufacturing and healthcare. One of the most prominent applications of blockchains is cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin. "Blockchain is promising for a wide range of applications. But current platforms rely on digital signatures, which are vulnerable to attacks by quantum computers," said Evgeniy Kiktenko from the Russian Quantum Center. "This also applies to the cryptographic hash functions used in preparing new blocks, meaning those with ...
