Scientists have developed an innovative, transparent eel-like robot that can swim silently in salt water without an electric motor. The robot created by engineers and marine biologists at the University of California in the US uses artificial muscles filled with water to propel itself. The foot-long robot, which is connected to an electronics board that remains on the surface, is also virtually transparent. The bot, described in the journal Science Robotics, is an important step towards a future when soft robots can swim in the ocean alongside fish and invertebrates without disturbing or harming them. Today, most underwater vehicles designed to observe marine life are rigid and submarine-like and powered by electric motors with noisy propellers, researchers said. "Instead of propellers, our robot uses soft artificial muscles to move like an eel underwater without making any sound," said Caleb Christianson, a PhD student at the University of California San Diego. One key innovation was
IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today asked Indian start-ups to leverage new-age technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Machine-to-Machine communication to create innovative solutions in healthcare and education, particularly for rural areas. Terming India as being "innovative by temperament", the minister said start ups should look at new "out-of-the-box" solutions in demand-driven areas like cyber security and data analytics, that are increasingly relevant in the digital economy. "How can you leverage Artificial Intelligence, Machine to Machine communication and Internet of Things for healthcare, agriculture and education in rural areas...that is the challenge for you," he said after presenting the 'ICT start-ups awards by MeityASSOCHAMEricsson'. The minister said that start-up companies should utilise the existing network of Common Services Centres (digital kiosks that deliver digital services) as also BPOs that are coming up in smaller towns. "The digital aspiration of .

Scientists have developed the world's smallest implantable device - no bigger than the width of a coin - that can be used to control brain patterns. The device converts infrared light into blue light to control neural activity and is both the smallest and lightest wireless optical biodevice to be reported. For centuries, it has been known that chemicals can change neural behaviour. The field of optogenetics proved that neural behavior can also be changed with mere light. It is now known that light can activate certain proteins in the brain to change brain patterns. Accordingly, scientists have implanted optical devices to successfully control the behavior of rodents using nothing more than light of specific wavelengths as the stimulus. However, the devices are often bulky, akin to wearing a football helmet or something heavier, and cause discomfort and distress to the animals. Takashi Tokuda, an associate professor at the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) in Japan, has .

Searching anything on the Internet is so easy. You just go to Google, type your query and you have your results that are accurate, at least the first few ones. However, that's not always the case.Type 'India first PM' and Google is throwing up accurate results, with Jawaharlal Nehru's name appearing on the Wikipedia link. The only problem with this is the photo - it is of current Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Yes, Prime Minister Modi's picture is somehow appearing alongside Nehru's name on the Wikipedia link - 'List of Prime Ministers of India'.Going by the tweets, it seems that this anomaly was first noticed on Wednesday. When it got highlighted, many Twitter users started posting their reactions along with the screenshots. Some of them were quick to blame Google for the "error".But, we will leave it to the experts to say whether it was Google's or Wikipedia's error, if it all it was there any.Till then, here are some of the Twitterers' reactions.Mitron, who was India's first PM? ...

Facebook is launching a pilot programme in Ireland ahead of a referendum on abortion which it hopes will ensure greater transparency in political advertising. The tool, which is also being tested in Canada, follows a scandal involving the political consultant Cambridge Analytica that has stoked concerns about privacy on the social network. One of the allegations in the Cambridge Analytica scandal was that data from millions of Facebook users was used to help micro-target political ads to select groups meaning that only those most susceptible to the message would see the advertisements. The new tool being launched today allows users of the network to see all of the advertisements a page is running. Voters are to decide in May whether they want to change Ireland's strict abortion laws.
