Scientists have used an inexpensive 3D printer to produce flat plastic items that, when heated, fold themselves into predetermined shapes such as a rose, a boat or even a bunny. These self-folding plastic objects represent a first step towards products such as flat-pack furniture that assume their final shapes with the help of a heat gun, said researchers from Carnegie Mellon University in the US. Emergency shelters also might be shipped flat and fold into shape under the warmth of the sun. "The software is based on new curve-folding theory representing banding motions of curved area," said Byoungkwon An, a research affiliate at Carnegie Mellon University. "The software based on this theory can compile any arbitrary 3-D mesh shape to an associated thermoplastic sheet in a few seconds without human intervention," said An. Self-folding materials are quicker and cheaper to produce than solid 3D objects, making it possible to replace noncritical parts or produce prototypes using ...

Scientists have discovered a 'pitch black' planet 470 light-years away that absorbs 99 per cent of light, making it one of the darkest planets ever found. The planet, named WASP-104b, was discovered by researchers from Keele University in the UK, who used NASA's Kepler telescope to show that it is 'darker than charcoal.' "This is one of the darkest planets ever discovered - reflecting very little light from its host star," said Teo Mocnik from Keele's Astrophysics Group. "WASP-104b is interesting because it was not even seen. All planets reflect starlight from their host star. Some planets are highly reflective, such as Venus reflecting 70 per cent of the light, while some others reflect only 10 per cent," Mocnik said. "When analysing the highly precise photometric data from Kepler, we were surprised not to see reflected starlight from WASP-104b," said Mocnik, who led the research. The planet was discovered orbiting a yellow dwarf star some 470 light-years away from us in the ...

Scientists have developed a new technique to 3D print food that can allow users to cook according to their preferences. 3D printing of food works much like 3D printing of other materials in that layers of raw material are deposited to build up a final product. In addition to offering customised food options, the ability to 3D print food at home or on an industrial scale could greatly reduce food waste and the cost involved with storage and transportation. It might also help meet the rapidly increasing food needs of a growing world population. "We built a platform that uses 3D printing to create food microstructures that allow food texture and body absorption to be customised on a personal level," said Jin-Kyu Rhee, associate professor at Ewha Womans University in South Korea. "We think that one day, people could have cartridges that contain powdered versions of various ingredients that would be put together using 3-D printing and cooked according to the user's needs or preferences," ..

The academic behind the app that allowed consulting firm Cambridge Analytica to farm the data of some 87 million Facebook users said today he was being scapegoated while the social network was being "mined left and right by thousands" of companies. Aleksandr Kogan, who teaches at Cambridge University, told a British parliamentary committee that criticism of his work by Facebook showed the US social media giant was in "PR crisis mode". "I don't believe they actually think these things because I think they realise that their platform has been mined left and right by thousands of others," said the Russian-American scientist, who is now banned from Facebook. "I was just the unlucky person that ended up somehow linked to the Trump campaign. It's convenient to point the finger at a single entity," he said, playing down his own work as of little political value. Kogan created a personality prediction app through his company Global Science Research (GSR), which offered a small financial ...
US securities regulators today announced that Altaba will pay a USD 35 million penalty for not telling them hackers had stolen Yahoo's "crown jewels." The 2014 breach blamed on Russian hackers affected hundreds of millions of Yahoo accounts, with stolen 'crown jewel' data including usernames, email addresses, phone numbers, birthdates, encrypted passwords, and security questions, according to the Securities and Exchange Commission. While Yahoo discovered the data breach quickly, it remained mum about it until more than two years later when it was being acquired by telecom giant Verizon Communications, the SEC case maintained. "Yahoo's failure to have controls and procedures in place to assess its cyber-disclosure obligations ended up leaving its investors totally in the dark about a massive data breach," SEC San Francisco regional office director Jina Choi said in a release. "Public companies should have controls and procedures in place to properly evaluate cyber incidents and ...
