Facebook to seek user feedback to improve community guidelines

Social networking giant Facebook, which has been embroiled in a data breach controversy, today said it will host a series of public events across various countries, including India, as part of its efforts to improve and refine its community standard guidelines. The US-based company -- which has made public its internal enforcement guidelines today -- said it is also giving users the right to appeal against decisions if the social media platform decides to remove photos, videos or posts deemed to be in violation of community standards. "We decided to publish these internal guidelines for two reasons. First, the guidelines will help people understand where we draw the line on nuanced issues. Second, providing these details makes it easier for everyone, including experts in different fields, to give us feedback so that we can improve the guidelines and the decisions we make over time," Facebook Vice President Global Policy Management Monika Bickert wrote in a blogpost. It added that ...

'Very loose rules' led to Facebook data leak, says SAS chief

Data analytics major SAS Institute chief Jim Goodnight has blamed "very very loose rules and regulations" at Facebook for the breach of personal data of millions of users. Amid a global furore over breach of personal data of tens of millions of Facebook users, including in India, Goodnight said although all technology companies have obligation to protect personal information they have collected on their consumers, most of them are careless about it. A pioneer in data analytics, the North Carolina-based SAS Institute has annual revenue of over USD 3.2 billion. "I think Facebook just had very, very loose rules and regulations about what they would permit and what they don't, because that is how they are making money. "... in short, technology companies have been very loose with the data they have collected on individuals," Goodnight, who is the company's co-founder and chief executive, told PTI in an interview here. He was speaking on the sidelines of the SAS Global Forum here, which ...

Rotten eggs gas around planet Uranus: study

The planet Uranus has clouds made up of hydrogen sulphide, the gas that gives rotten eggs their unpleasant smell, a study has found. This discovery is significant as it may help scientists and astronomers understand how the early solar system was formed and how it evolved over time, researchers said. Based on sensitive spectroscopic observations with the Gemini North telescope, scientists, including those from the University of Leicester in the UK, have uncovered the noxious gas swirling high above the giant planet's cloud tops. This result, published in the journal Nature Astronomy, resolves a stubborn, long-standing mystery of one of our neighbours in space, researchers said. Even after decades of observations, and a visit by the Voyager 2 spacecraft, Uranus has held on to one critical secret - the composition of its clouds. Patrick Irwin from the University of Oxford, UK and colleagues spectroscopically dissected the infrared light from Uranus captured by the 8-metre Gemini North .

Facebook unveils appeal process for when it removes posts

Facebook said today it will give users the right to appeal decisions if the social network decides to remove photos, videos or written posts deemed to violate community standards. Plans to roll out an appeals process globally in coming months came as Facebook provided a first-ever look at internal standards used to decide what posts go too far in terms of hateful or threating speech. "This is part of an effort to be more clear about where we draw the line on content," Facebook public policy manager in charge of content Siobhan Cummiskey told AFP. "And for the first time we're giving you the right to appeal our decisions on individual posts so you can ask for a second opinion when you think we've made a mistake." The move to involve Facebook users more on standards for removing content comes as the social network fends off criticism on an array of fronts, including handling of people's data, spreading "fake news," and whether politics has tinted content removal ...

Novel paint can make your walls 'smart'

Scientists have developed a conductive paint that can turn any wall smart' by enabling it to sense human touch, and detect gestures and appliances used. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and Disney Research in the US found that they could transform 'dumb' walls into smart ones at relatively low cost - about USD 20 per square metre - using simple tools and techniques, such as a paint roller. "Walls are usually the largest surface area in a room, yet we don't make much use of them other than to separate spaces, and perhaps hold up pictures and shelves," said Chris Harrison, assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon. "As the internet of things and ubiquitous computing become reality, it is tempting to think that walls can become active parts of our living and work environments," said Harrison. The researchers found that they could use conductive paint to create electrodes across the surface of a wall, enabling users to place or move light switches or other controls anywhere on a ...

Google parent Alphabet profit leaps on ad growth

Google parent Alphabet reported a surge in quarterly profits, lifted by strong growth in the digital advertising segment it dominates along with Facebook. Profit in the first three months of 2018 soared more than 70 percent from a year ago to $9.4 billion, Alphabet said in an earnings report that was well above forecasts. Revenue at the California-based internet giant during the first three months of this year was $31.1 billion, up 26 percent from the same period last year. Alphabet shares slipped slightly in after-market trades that followed release of the earnings report, evidently on investor concerns about growing costs. "The all-important advertising revenues came in ahead of Street expectations although the bulls were hoping for a bigger beat," GBH Insights head of technology research Daniel Ives said in an analyst note. "While fundamental worries coupled by regulatory black clouds continue to be overhangs on the name, we believe 1Q advertising and 'bread and butter' search ...
