Facebook sends privacy alerts to affected users

Facebook has begun alerting some users that their data was swept up in the Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal. Anthony Bagnetto was one of many people who woke up Tuesday morning to a notification on his Facebook feed informing him that "one of" his friends used Facebook to log into a now-banned personality quiz app called "This Is Your Digital Life." The notice says the app misused the information, including public profile, page likes, birthday and current city, by sharing it with the political data-mining firm Cambridge Analytica. "Anybody can be taken by this," said Bagnetto, 38, a triathlon coach who lives in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and said he didn't blame whichever of his friends took the quiz for exposing his data. Personal information data breach looms large in India: Verizon

Lack of strong data protection and privacy legislations makes India highly vulnerable to data breaches related to personal information, according to digital network solution firm Verizon. "Specifically with respect to India, the threat of PII (personally identifiable information also called sensitive personal information) data breaches looms large due to lack of a strong data protection and privacy legislation," Verizon Enterprise Solutions, Managing Principal for APJ, Ashish Thapar said. The company today released data breach investigations report (DBIR) which found that social engineering targeting personal information in education segment is high, which is then used for identity fraud. "Highly sensitive research is also at risk, with 20 percent of attacks motivated by espionage. Eleven percent of attacks also have fun as the motive rather than financial gain," the report said. Jaipur discom registers 62% growth in online bill payment

Jaipur discom has registered 62 per cent growth in number of electricity subscribers paying their bills online, an official said. The discom had started a scheme for subscribers to pay their bills online, after which 84,281 subscribers paid their bills through various online modes. In July, 2017, 1,34,429 subscribers paid their electricity bills online, which rose to 2,18,710 in February 2018, he said. A total of Rs 25.87 lakh was given as online bill payment encouragement prize to 1,000 subscribers selected through lottery. The sum was adjusted in their electricity bill, Jaipur discom managing director R G Gupta said in a release. He said that under the scheme, 100 subscribers are selected through a lottery every month that pay their electricity bill of up to Rs 20,000 online. The selected subscribers are given a maximum of Rs 5,000 or actual bill amount, whichever is less, as a reward, which is adjusted in their bills.

Tech Mahindra today said it has entered into a strategic partnership with Silicon Valley-based Balbix for launching an artificial intelligence-powered threat assessment platform to check cyber security breaches. MSME Min, GSTN to soon ink pact for data sharing

The MSME ministry will soon sign an agreement with GSTN, the IT backbone of GST, for sharing of data related to small and medium enterprises as it looks to widen its reach to such enterprises, an official source said. Around 44 lakh micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are registered with the ministry's Udyog Aadhaar portal, while the number of MSMEs on GSTN database is around 1 crore. As a result of the move, the number of MSMEs registered under Udyog Aadhaar could shoot up to one crore, the official said. The data-sharing will enable the government to reach out to more MSMEs and educate them on benefits offered by government schemes. Moreover, these businesses will be able to acquire credit at a lower cost, while improving the flow of credit. The GST database of MSMEs has reached one crore.
