BJP questions Piketty's name in group analysing caste data in Telangana

The BJP on Saturday criticised the Telangana government for including French economist Thomas Piketty in an expert group to analyse the state's caste survey, as it questioned the involvement of a foreigner in studying "sensitive" social data. BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi asked why the state's Congress government needed a foreign expert and if there was any dearth of capable people in India. He noted that many Indians were occupying important positions globally, slamming the state government for including a foreigner in the 11-member group headed by a retired Supreme Court judge. The Rajya Sabha member said the model proposed by Piketty, who has extensively studied wealth inequality, had drawn heavy criticism abroad and noted that his tax recommendations could inflict a lot of harm on the salaried and middle class. He alleged that the Congress had stood with foreign forces to echo their criticism of the Indian economy and various other issues, and asked the main ...

T'gana tunnel: Rescue underway, excavation ongoing to detect human presence

The rescue operation at the partially collapsed SLBC tunnel, where eight people have been trapped for the past 12 days, continued at a brisk pace on Wednesday, with excavation being carried out at locations suggested by scientists to look for human presence. The conveyor belt at the tunnel, which has been repaired and made operational, is assisting the rescue teams in shifting debris out, officials said. The belt was damaged after the accident on February 22. Rescue teams are also conducting drilling at other locations based on input from scientists at the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) in Hyderabad, who are using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to detect human presence. However, tough conditions inside the tunnel, including muck and water, have posed challenges for the rescue personnel. Earlier inspections at other locations identified by the scientists did not reveal any signs of human presence. Officials on Tuesday evening said the representatives of the Nationa

Chandrababu Naidu reassures Telangana on Godavari water plan; slams Oppn

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has assured the people of Telangana that there is no cause for concern regarding his government's plan to divert Godavari river water from Polavaram to Banakacherla, as the initiative is aimed solely at utilising excess water that would otherwise flow into the sea. Addressing a party meeting to celebrate the Telegu Desam Party's (TDP) victory in two graduates MLC elections on Tuesday, the chief minister claimed a political party is "politicising" Andhra Pradesh's strategy to salvage water draining into the sea. "I am appealing again, when water draining into the sea is taken to a famine-hit region, nobody should feel bad. Everybody should think about it," Naidu said, adding that he was appealing to all the Telugu people. Noting that some people are questioning what right does Andhra Pradesh have to divert water draining into the sea, Naidu wondered where the Telugu society is headed. Reminding that he never opposed Telangana's ...

T'gana tunnel collapse: Rescue teams look for workers at other locations

Rescue teams involved in the Telangana tunnel collapse operation are inspecting locations identified by scientists for possible human presence, following a radar survey, as they only detected metals at other spots, officials said on Monday. Scientists from the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) in Hyderabad conducted a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey inside the tunnel to look for signs of human presence. "They (are) trying at the other locations (given by scientists). The scientists are ready to conduct GPR survey again at any other points," they said. The challenging conditions inside the tunnel, including slush and water, complicated the efforts of both rescue personnel and scientists. However, officials noted that with improving conditions the scientists are ready to carry out the survey again. Drilling was also carried out at locations where NGRI scientists had detected "anomalies" inside the tunnel. However, only metallic objects were found. Chief Minister .
