Tripura Congress working president Billal Mia was expelled from the party shortly after he resigned from the post, amid speculation that he could join the ruling BJP. After he put in his papers, Mia was expelled from the Congress on Wednesday for anti-party activities, a leader of the grand old party said. The expulsion came after senior Tripura ministers Ratan Lal Nath and Sushanta Chowdhury met him at his residence in Sonamura in Sepahijala district recently. "Billal Mia has been expelled from the Congress for six years for indulging in anti-party activities," a senior party leader said. Mia, who was a former state minister, also resigned from the party. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday said his government has been working for the overall development of the state and aims at achieving 8 per cent growth in the current financial year. Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday said 'Permanent Resident of Tripura Certificate' (PRTC) will be mandatory for applying to jobs in all state government departments and semi-government bodies. He said the decision was taken by the state cabinet to provide more opportunities to the people of Tripura, and this will be in addition to the other requirements already in force. Asserting that Tripura has immense opportunities, Chief Minister Manik Saha on Monday urged investors to invest in exploring the state's natural resources. Addressing the National Conference on Agri-Horticultural Crops at Pragna Bhavan here, Saha said Tripura has a lot of potential for rubber-based industries as it produces 94,000 mt of natural rubber annually, the second highest after Kerala. "Tripura has already begun exporting rubber thread which has a great demand in Bangladesh. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has asserted that the BJP-IPFT alliance will rule the northeastern state for the next 40-50 years. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said his government on Tuesday signed eight Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with private players amounting to Rs 312.38 crore to promote industries in the northeastern state. The MoUs include setting up of a medical college with an estimated cost of Rs 247 crore on Public Private Partnership (PPP) model in Dhalai, a tribal-dominated district. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Sunday said the Centre has approved Rs 2,000 crore for the state under the Jal Jeevan Mission to supply piped drinking water to households. Saha thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat for approving Rs 2,000 crore to implement piped water scheme.
