Unemployment rate in India lowest among developing nations: Union Minister

Unemployment rate in India is the lowest among the developing countries and Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) has helped in achieving this self-sustaining employment, Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Bhagwanth Khuba said on Saturday. Khuba was speaking at a Rozgar Mela here where he handed over the appointment letters to 135 candidates. Youths from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh who secured jobs in Central government organisations and departments like AIIMS, LIC and Bank of Baroda received appointment letters from the Union Minister on the occasion, an official release said. Khuba said the Rozgar Melas being organised by the Central government are in line with the wishes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure transparency and corruption-free recruitment process. Corruption and biases used to happen in recruitment earlier, he alleged. Post pandemic, India has achieved 7.2 per cent GDP growth rate which is the highest in the world. Unemployment narrative wrong; disadvantage due to lack of skills: MoS IT

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Friday said the narrative around unemployment in the country is not correct, as the Narendra Modi-led government is dealing with a "legacy problem" since it came to power in 2014 when 31 crore of 42 crore Indians at the workplace were unskilled. "This narrative about unemployment is not correct because there are a lot of jobs and micro-entrepreneurial opportunities being created, but they require skills," Chandrasekhar, the Union minister of state for skill development and entrepreneurship, said. "And why a lot of Indians today find themselves at a disadvantage, is that around 2014, of the 42 crore Indians in the workforce 31 crore were unskilled. Three out of four Indians after 65 years of Independence were left to fend for themselves without skills in the workplace and the last nine years we are dealing with that," he observed. The minister said, "In a way, a legacy problem is being solved" through skills in the National Education Policy. He

Unemployment rate dips 7.7% in May on decline in labour participation: CMIE

The unemployment rate in India fell to 7.7 per cent in May due to a decline in the labour participation at 441.9 million, according to a data released by private economic think tank CMIE. Unemployment rate in India among people aged 15 years and above fell to 7.7 per cent in May 2023, from 8.5 per cent in the previous month, CMIE's Natasha Somayya K said in an analysis on its website. The unemployment rate inched down as a consequence of a fall in the labour participation, which implies a fall in the number of people who entered the labour market in search of work. Compared to April, labour participation rate (LPR) fell by 1.1 percentage point to 39.6 per cent in May, she said. "This drop in LPR in May was expected because April witnessed a large number of people entering the labour force but only a small share was able to secure employment in the month. This was bound to discourage many from searching for work in the month of May. As a result, the labour force shrunk in size from

Changes in recruitment system ended corruption, nepotism, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted on Tuesday that changes brought in by his government in the recruitment system have ended the possibility of corruption and nepotism as he gave away appointment letters to over 71,000 people at a 'Rozgar Mela'. From applying for government jobs to the announcement of results, the entire process has been made online, he said while elaborating on employment opportunities and infrastructure development ushered by the BJP dispensation at the Centre in the last nine years. "The possibility of corruption and nepotism in recruitment for government jobs has now ended," Modi said. He referred to his recent meetings with CEOs of leading global companies, including Walmart, Apple, Foxconn and Cisco, to assert that there is "unprecedented positivity" about industry and investment in the country. The prime minister cited EPFO net payroll figures to say that over 4.5 crore people have got jobs since 2018-19 as formal employment has been growing. FDI and the

Unemployment rate rises to 3-month high of 7.8% in March, says CMIE

India's unemployment rose to a three-month high in March to 7.8 per cent as the country's labour markets deteriorated, according to data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). Unemployment rate in the country surged in December 2022 to 8.30 per cent but declined in January to 7.14 per cent. It edged up again in February to 7.45 per cent, the CMIE data released on Saturday showed. During March, the unemployment rate in urban areas was at 8.4 per cent while in the rural areas it was at 7.5 per cent. "India's labour markets deteriorated in March 2023. The unemployment rate increased from 7.5 per cent in February to 7.8 per cent in March. The effect of this is compounded by the simultaneous fall in the labour force participation rate, which fell from 39.9 per cent to 39.8 per cent," CMIE managing director Mahesh Vyas told PTI. This led to a fall in the employment rate from 36.9 per cent in February to 36.7 per cent in March, Vyas said, adding that employment fell from 40

Not sufficient emphasis on jobs in FY24 budget, Ex-RBI Governor Subbarao

Former RBI governor D Subbarao on Thursday said there was not 'sufficient emphasis' on jobs in the Budget for 2023-24 and it failed to grapple with the unemployment problem head on, except to believe that growth itself will generate jobs. Subbarao noted that the unemployment problem was quite bad even before the Covid and it has become alarming as a result of the pandemic. "I was disappointed that there was not sufficient emphasis on jobs (in the Budget for 2023-24) ...mere growth will not do; we need job intensive growth," he told PTI in an interview. The former RBI governor was asked what was his biggest disappointment with the Budget. According to Subbarao, roughly a million people join the labour force every month and India is not able to create even half as many jobs. "As a result, the unemployment problem is not just growing but is becoming a crisis," he pointed out. While noting that there is no single or simple solution to problem as big and complex as unemployment, Subba
