Possible work halt at Canada's 2 largest railroads could disrupt US trade

Canada's two largest railroads are starting to shut down their shipping networks as a labour dispute with the Teamsters union threatens to cause lockouts or strikes that would disrupt cross-border trade with the US. Both the Canadian Pacific Kansas City and Canadian National railroads, which haul millions of tons of freight across the border, have stopped taking certain shipments of hazardous materials and refrigerated products. Both are threatening to lock out Teamsters Canada workers starting Thursday if deals are not reached. On Tuesday, CPKC will stop all shipments that start in Canada and all shipments originating in the US that are headed for Canada, the railroad said Saturday. The Canadian Press reported that on Friday, Canadian National barred container imports from US partner railroads. Jeff Windau, industrials analyst for Edward Jones & Co., said his firm expects work stoppages to last only a few days, but if they go longer, there could be significant supply chain ...

Beyond childless cat ladies, JD Vance's long quest to encourage more births

Five summers ago, Donald Trump's running mate JD Vance then a 34-year-old memoirist and father of a 2-year-old boy took the stage at a conservative conference and tackled an issue that would become a core part of his political brand: the United States' declining fertility rate. Our people aren't having enough children to replace themselves. That should bother us, Vance told the gathering in Washington. He outlined the obvious concern that Social Security depends on younger workers' contributions and then said, We want babies not just because they are economically useful. We want more babies because children are good. And we believe children are good, because we are not sociopaths. Vance repeatedly expressed alarm about declining birth rates as he launched his political career in 2021 with a bid for the U.S. Senate in Ohio. His criticism then of Vice President Kamala Harris, now the Democratic presidential nominee, and other high-profile Democrats as childless cat ladies who didn't

Schumer said the partnership between the two counties has a huge potential for growth in the 21st century. PM Modi to address Indian-American community in New York on Sept 22

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address members of the Indian-American community at a mega diaspora event here next month when he visits the US for the high-level UN General Assembly session. The community event will be held on September 22 at the 16,000-seater Nassau Coliseum in Long Island. Modi is scheduled to address the high-level UN General Assembly session here on September 26, according to a provisional list of speakers issued by the UN. Sources told PTI that preparations are in full swing for the community event in Long Island, coming 10 years after Modi had addressed a massive community gathering at the famed Madison Square Garden in New York in September 2014. This happened just months after he had first taken charge as Prime Minister and had visited the city to attend the high-level annual General Assembly session. In 2019, Modi addressed the mega community event Howdy Modi' at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, where he was joined by then-US president Donald Trump.

The United States welcomes India's engagement in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine and its efforts to bring peace between the two countries, US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel has said here. Patel was responding to a question on the likely visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Ukraine later this month. "I will let the (Indian) prime minister's office speak to any of his own travels. I don't have anything to offer there," he said during his daily news conference on Wednesday. "We are in touch with our Indian partners on a number of issues and, of course, would welcome India's engagement in the war between Russia and Ukraine, especially as it relates to ensuring that we get to a just and durable peace that is reflective of what our Ukrainian partners are attempting to do, which is to defend their territorial integrity and sovereignty," Patel said. Mars, maker of M&M's and Snickers, to buy Kellanova for nearly $30 billion

M&M's maker Mars is buying Kellanova, the maker of Cheez-Its and Pop-Tarts for nearly USD 30 billion, vastly expanding the number of household-name brands under one roof. Kellanova was created last year when the Kellogg Co. split into three companies. Kellanova sells many of the former company's most profitable brands, including Pringles, Eggo, Town House, MorningStar Farms and Rice Krispies Treats. It had net sales of more than USD 13 billion last year and has approximately 23,000 employees. Mars Inc. said Wednesday that it will pay USD 83.50 per share in cash. The company put the total value of the transaction at USD 35.9 billion, including debt. It is the biggest deal in the sector since J.M. Smucker bought Hostess for USD 5.6 billion last year, and among the largest of 2024, coming in second to Exxon Mobil's USD 60 billion acquistion of Pioneer Natural Resources. Mars' purchase of Kellanova is expected to close in the first half of next year. Once it's complete, Kellanova will

US will continue to monitor 'human rights' situation in B'desh: White House

The United States will continue to monitor the situation in Bangladesh, the White House said, emphasising that President Joe Biden is "consistent in speaking loud and clear" on human rights issues. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was responding to questions regarding calls from Hindu-American groups and Indian-American lawmakers seeking the US government's intervention in protecting the lives and properties of the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. "We are certainly going to continue monitoring the situation. I don't have anything else to add beyond that. But, when it comes to any type of human rights issues, the president (Joe Biden) has been very consistent in speaking loud and clear in public and also privately and he'll continue to do that, Jean-Pierre told reporters at her daily news conference on Monday. Over the past few days, hundreds of Hindu-Americans in various US cities have been holding peaceful ...

US beefs up posture in Mideast, warns of an Iran-backed attack on Israel

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered a guided missile submarine to the Middle East and is telling the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group to sail more quickly to the area, as the U.S. on Monday said it believes Iran or its proxies may launch a strike against Israel as soon as this week. The moves, announced by the Defense Department Sunday, come as the U.S. and other allies push for Israel and Hamas to achieve a cease-fire agreement that could help calm soaring tensions in the region following the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and a senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut. Officials have been on the lookout for retaliatory strikes by both Iran and Hezbollah for the killings, and the U.S. has been beefing up its presence in the region. John Kirby, the White House national security spokesman, said Iran's response to the killings could be this week, but that it is difficult to ascertain at this particular time if there's an attack
