UP govt presents Rs 12,909 cr supplementary Budget for FY25 in Assembly

The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday presented a supplementary budget of more than Rs 12,909 crore for the 2024-25 financial year in the assembly. State Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna said the supplementary budget of Rs 12,909.93 crore is 1.66 per cent of the original Budget (of Rs 7.36 lakh crore) presented in February this year. Khanna said the expenditure on revenue account is Rs 4,227.94 crore and the expenditure on capital account is Rs 7,981.99 crore in the supplementary budget. He said a provision of Rs 7,500.18 crore has been made for industrial development, Rs 2,000 crore for energy department, Rs 1,000 crore for purchase of buses by the transport department, Rs 600 crore for Amrit Yojana under the urban development department, Rs 200 crore for short-term programmes under Uttar Pradesh Skill Mission and Rs 100 crore for rural stadium and open gym. UP govt announces formation of State Capital Region on lines of NCR

The Uttar Pradesh government Friday notified the formation of the State Capital Region' (SCR) on the lines of the National Capital Region (NCR). Governor Anandiben Patel also approved the establishment of Uttar Pradesh State Capital Region Development Authority (UP-SCRDA). The Housing and Urban Planning Department issued the notification following her approval to the proposals. The notification said the newly formed Uttar Pradesh State Capital Region includes Lucknow and the adjoining districts of Hardoi, Sitapur, Unnao, Rae Bareli and Barabanki. According to the notification, a total area of 27,826 square kilometres will be included in the SCR. The UP-SCRDA will oversee the implementation of development projects and ensure effective management of resources within the newly defined area. Cops enter Hathras preacher's ashram to check security, say he is not there

Police entered the ashram premises of religious preacher Jagat Guru Saakar Vishwahari Bhole Baba here and later said he was not present there. A police official said they had gone there to check security arrangements. Police personnel have been deployed outside the ashram since the stampede at the preacher's congregation in Harthras claimed 121 lives. In reply to a question by reporters, Circle Officer Sunil Kumar Singh said police and special operation group (SOG) personnel entered the ashram premises on Wednesday night. "There were 50-60 sevadars (volunteers), including women, inside the ashram," he said. Asked whether 'Satsang' preacher Bhole Baba is inside the ashram or not, the police officer said, "He (Baba) was neither there yesterday nor today." The Supreme Court on Friday sought a response from the Uttar Pradesh government on a plea by MLA Abbas Ansari, who is lodged in jail, seeking permission to attend fatiha or special prayers on April 10 following the death of his father Mukhtar Ansari. Gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari died of cardiac arrest at a hospital in Banda in Uttar Pradesh on March 28. Abbas Ansari, who is in judicial custody in connection with a criminal case, had moved the apex court seeking permission to attend the last rites of his father. On Friday, his counsel told a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Sandeep Mehta that his plea could not be listed before the court on time and now the funeral is over. UP waives electricity bills of farmers with private tube wells from April 1

In a major decision, the Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday decided to waive electricity bills of farmers with private tube wells with retrospective effect from April 1, 2023. The decision taken at the state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will benefit around 1.5 crore farmers, an official release said. The government has provided Rs 1,800 crore in the 2024-25 budget for implementation of the scheme. Furthermore, the government has put forth a proposal for a scheme aimed at assisting farmers with outstanding electricity bills predating April 1, 2023, in bill settlement without accruing interest and offering them convenient installment options. Energy Minister A K Sharma said through this decision the government has kept its promise of providing 100 per cent exemption from power tariffs to the farmers owning private tube wells in the state. Religious conversion case: SC gives interim bail to UP's SHUATS varsity VC

The Supreme Court on Monday granted interim bail to Rajendra Bihari Lal, vice chancellor of Uttar Pradesh's Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences (SHUATS), in a case of alleged illegal religious conversion. A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra issued notice to the UP government on his plea challenging the Allahabad High Court. The top court noted that the high court is not hearing the bail plea filed by Lal who has been in custody since December 31 last year. "Issue notice, in the meantime, by way of ad interim order, we grant interim bail to the petitioner," the bench said while adding that the quantum of bail bond shall not exceed Rs 25,000. Senior advocate Siddharth Dave, appearing for Lal, submitted that the petitioner was arrested despite the apex court's order. The Uttar Pradesh police had earlier told the apex court that Lal and other accused are the main perpetrators of a mass religious conversion
