UP's resilient farming model exemplary for small farmers: World Bank chief

World Bank Group President Ajay Banga has praised Uttar Pradesh's efforts to integrate technology with agriculture, describing the state's "resilient farming model" a global example for small and marginal farmers. Speaking at the AgriConnect Flagship event during the 2025 Annual Meetings of the World Bank, Banga showcased the UP model, having visited the state and seen things for himself in May, said the state's director of information, Vishal Singh. About 100 quintals of illegal firecrackers worth over Rs 50 lakh have been seized and six persons arrested after an explosion triggered by illegal storage of crackers left eight people injured in a market here, police said on Friday. The extensive crackdown on illegal firecrackers across the city has been initiated after a massive explosion rocked the congested Mishri Bazaar area here on Wednesday, leaving eight people injured and two scooters damaged. Police said the explosion took place due to illegal firecracker storage, and denied links to any terrorist activity. "We have raided simultaneously in multiple areas, including Moolganj, Fazalganj, Govind Nagar and Naubasta following inputs about large-scale storage of fireworks in densely populated areas," Commissioner of Police (Kanpur) Raghubir Lal told PTI on Friday. Kanpur blast due to illegal firecrackers storage, no terror links: Police

The massive explosion in the congested Mishri Bazaar near a mosque here was caused due to illegal firecracker storage, and not because of scooter explosion which was initially suggested as the reason for the incident, top police brass confirmed on Thursday. In a press conference, the Kanpur Police also denied links to any terrorist activity in the explosions. The CCTV footage reviewed by investigators revealed that the blast was triggered by a cardboard box kept outside a toy shop, not by any vehicles. Private jet skids off runway in UP's Farrukhabad; passengers, pilots safe

A private jet skidded off the runway and crashed into bushes at the Mohammadabad airstrip on Thursday, officials said. All passengers and the two pilots escaped unhurt. According to district officials, the jet, belonging to Jet Service Aviation Pvt Ltd and bearing registration number VT-DEZ, lost control while taking off and veered off the runway into shrubs around 10.30 am. The jet was carrying the managing director of a beer factory under construction in the district's industrial area, who had arrived to inspect the project site, they said. Following the incident, the sub-divisional magistrate rushed to the spot. District Magistrate Ashutosh Kumar Dwivedi said, "The private jet carrying the MD of an under-construction factory lost control during takeoff and went into nearby bushes. Five associates of controversial cleric Maulana Tauqeer Raza have been issued recovery notices of over Rs 1.25 crore for alleged power theft at e-charging stations, officials said on Monday. Last week, a joint team conducted raids in the Baan Khana area and uncovered five e-charging centres operating on stolen electricity. An FIR was lodged, and recovery notices of over Rs 1.25 crore was issued against the five accused. Officials said this was not the first such incident in the area and a similar raid about a year ago had also exposed four illegal charging units of the same persons. Following fresh investigations, recovery certificates (RCs) amounting to over Rs 1.25 crore have now been issued against five accused. Renowned classical vocalist and Padma Vibhushan Pandit Chhannulal Mishra died early Thursday. He was 89. Family sources said Mishra breathed his last around 4 am after a prolonged illness. The vocalist had been living in Mirzapur with his youngest daughter's family for some time. According to sources, Mishra's health deteriorated late Wednesday night and he was admitted to a hospital, where he died during treatment. He is survived by three daughters and a son. NCRB data shows lower crime rate than national average in UP: State Police

Despite Uttar Pradesh having the highest population in the country, the crime rate in the state in 2023 stood at 181.3, much below the national crime rate of 270.3, the state police said on Wednesday, quoting the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. Uttar Pradesh accounts for 16.98 per cent of the total population in the country. Crime rate, defined as the number of crimes per one lakh population, is considered the most reliable indicator for assessing a state's law and order situation, as it adjusts for population size and growth, the state police said in a statement. An analysis showed that Uttar Pradesh ranks favourably across various crime heads. For total crimes reported under the Indian Penal Code, the state was placed 20th among the 28 states and eight Union Territories.
