Monkeypox shots not getting to people who need them the most: US data

The Biden administration said Friday there's enough monkeypox vaccine available now but health officials say the shots aren't getting to some of the people who need the protection the most. About 10% of monkeypox vaccine doses have been given to Black people, even though they account for one-third of US cases, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. The new numbers come from 17 states and two cities, and represent the most comprehensive details yet on who has been getting the two-dose vaccines. Similar disparities had been reported previously by a few states and cities. Most US monkeypox cases have been in men who have sex with men, but officials have stressed that anyone can catch the virus. Experts offered several possible explanations for the disparity. It may be related to how and where shots are being offered and publicised. It may be that some Black men don't trust doctors and government public health efforts. Or they may be less willing to identify ...

EU regulator approves plan to increase monkeypox vaccine supplies

A smaller dose of the monkeypox vaccine appears to still be effective and can be used to stretch the current supply by five times, the European Medicines Agency said Friday, echoing a recommendation made earlier this month by the US Food and Drug Administration. The EU drug regulator said in a statement that injecting people with just one fifth the regular dose of the smallpox vaccine made by Bavarian Nordic appeared to produce similar levels of antibodies against monkeypox as a full dose. The approach calls for administering Bavarian Nordic's vaccine with an injection just under the skin rather than into deeper tissue, a practice that may stimulate a better immune response. People still need to get two doses, about four weeks apart. The EMA said national authorities could decide, as a temporary measure to use smaller doses of the vaccine to protect vulnerable people during the ongoing monkeypox outbreak. EU health commissioner Stella Kyriakides said the decision would allow the ..

India has singular contribution to make to the world in terms of vaccination and that which is being produced and supplied to the entire world," Sitharaman said. Today, the country is double dosing every citizen, she said, adding it is not easy to produce and execute COVID vaccination at that .
