Goa: Ban imposed on arms during by-election, license holders directed to deposit weapons

Over 2,000 Kashmiri youths participate in Army recruitment rally in J-K's Baramulla district

Braving snowfall and rains, over 2,000 Kashmiri youths participated in an Army recruitment rally in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district, defence officials said on Wednesday. The recruitment rally, conducted at Gantamulla Army Camp on Tuesday, comes just five days after the Pulwama terror attack in which 40 paramilitary personnel were killed. Officials said the youths from northern districts of the valley turned in large numbers to participate in the rally. "Youth of Kashmir turned in large numbers to join the Armed Forces. The recruitment drive is being conducted at Gantamulla, Baramulla. Pulwama attack: NIA officially takes charge of probe, re-registers case

The National Investigating Agency (NIA) on Wednesday officially took over the Pulwama terror attack for further probe and re-registered the case. After a notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday, the NIA had registered an FIR against unknown people in connection with the case.Around 40 CRPF personnel were killed in a deadly terror attack carried out by Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway on February 14.A day after the attack, an NIA team, along with explosives and forensic experts, collected materials required for forensic evaluation of the attack at the spot. Considering the status of the scene of the crime, the team continued with the sifting of the material on Saturday as well.On February 18, the suspected mastermind of the terror attack, Kamran alias Ghazi, was gunned down in a fierce encounter.

NIA takes over Pulwama attack probe from J-K Police

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday took over the probe into the February 14 terror attack in Pulwama from the Jammu and Kashmir police, officials said. The agency has re-registered the case and formed a team to investigate the terror strike in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed, an NIA spokesperson here said. The state police had registered a case at the Awantipora police station on February 14 after a suicide bomber blew himself up next to a CRPF bus, which was part of a 78-vehicle convoy carrying over 2,500 personnel on their way from Jammu to Srinagar. The NIA has already gathered explosive material from the blast site in Lethpora in Pulwama district of south Kashmir and has been involved in the questioning of around a dozen people detained by police following the bombing, officials said. Pulwama attack: Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan meets Rajnath

Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Ajay Bisaria Wednesday met Home Minister Rajnath Singh, amid the heightened tension between the two countries, officials said. India's Ambassador to the United States Harsh Vardhan Shringla too called on the home minister and discussed bilateral issues. The terror attack in Pulwama prominently figured during the 20 minutes meeting between Bisaria and Singh, a home ministry official said. He was called back by the government for consultations after the Pulwama attack in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed when a suicide bomber of Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad rammed a vehicle carrying explosives into their bus. However, a home ministry spokesperson described the two Indian envoys meeting the home minister as "courtesy call". Civilians evacuated from last Islamic State holdout in Syria

A convoy of trucks carrying civilians has left the last enclave held by Islamic State militants in eastern Syria. An Associated Press team says at least eight trucks emerged Wednesday from the tip of a humanitarian corridor used in past weeks to evacuate people from the militants' last patch of territory along the Euphrates River. Women, children and men could be seen aboard the trucks. Mustafa Bali, a spokesman for the Syrian Democratic Forces, the U.S.-backed militia spearheading the fight against IS in Syria, confirmed the trucks were carrying civilians from the enclave. It was not immediately clear if militants were also on board the trucks. Around 300 militants are believed to be holed up in the enclave, along with several hundred civilians.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan visited the family of CRPF jawan V V Vasanth Kumar, who was killed in the recent Pulwama terror attack, in Wayanad district on Wednesday. He spoke to Kumar's wife, Sheena, two children -- son Amandeep (5) and daughter Anamika (8) -- and mother and assured them all support from the government. Vijayan told the family that if Sheena was not interested in continuing working as an assistant at the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, she would be appointed as a sub-inspector in the police department. Two Kashmiri shawl vendors have claimed they were beaten up and called "stone pelters" by unidentified men on a train, forcing them to cut short their business trip to Rohtak, officials said Wednesday. Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar on Wednesday denied reports of any assault on Kashmiri students following the Pulwama terror attack and said there is no threat to students from the Valley. China closes Tibet to foreigners for sensitive anniversaries

China is keeping foreign travellers out of Tibet during sensitive political anniversaries. Travel agencies contacted Wednesday said foreign tourists would not be allowed into the Himalayan region until April 1. It's not clear when the ban started, although some monitoring groups said it started this month. March 10 is the 60th anniversary of an abortive 1959 uprising against Chinese rule in Tibet, while anti-government riots occurred March 14, 2008, in the regional capital Lhasa. While the foreigner travel ban is an annual occurrence, the occasion of the 60th anniversary is drawing special attention from the authorities. Kashmiris living in Goa on Tuesday displayed their patriotic feelings.
