Agreed to alliance as BJP's way of treating allies has

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray said Tuesday evening that he decided to join hands with the BJP because of the saffron party's changed way of dealing with its allies. Thackeray was speaking to Sena workers at his residence here. On Monday, Shiv Sena and BJP, the sparring ruling allies, announced that they would contest the coming Lok Sabha and Maharashtra Assembly elections together. "I experienced the change in the way they treat people, hence I decided to join hands with the BJP," Thackeray said. He also reiterated that the BJP's proposal that chief minister will be from the party which will send more MLAs to the Assembly was not acceptable to the Sena. "I want to see a Sena chief minister and I will work for it," he said. "I have already won in the treaty, now we should win the real battle of election," Thackeray said.

Kashmiris in Goa shut down shops, protest Pulwama terror attack

Kashmiris living in Goa on Tuesday displayed their patriotic feelings. Nearly 250 Kashmiri shopkeepers in Canacona in South Goa kept their stores shut for one day on Tuesday to protest against the killing of 40 CRPF personnel in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama on February 14."Our business loss means nothing to us as compared to the loss faced by the country," Shabbir Ahmed from Canacona said.Nearly 40 CRPF personnel were killed after a suicide bomber attacked a CRPF convoy in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district with a vehicle laden with explosives.The convoy comprised 78 buses in which around 2,500 personnel were travelling from Jammu to Srinagar.JeM, a Pakistan-based terrorist group, claimed the responsibility for the attack which left the bus extensively damaged in the blast.

Jihadists, civilians quit IS holdout in east Syria: US-backed force

Several Islamic State group jihadists and dozens of civilians, including foreigners, quit the last IS-held pocket in eastern Syria on Tuesday, US-backed forces said. IS, which in 2014 declared a cross-border "caliphate" straddling Syria and Iraq, has been expelled from all the land it held except for a patch of Baghouz village. Backed by air strikes by the US-led coalition, the Syrian Democratic Forces have already retaken most of the village. SDF spokesman Adnan Afrin said a convoy of trucks entered Baghouz on Tuesday to transfer jihadists and their relatives out to SDF-held territory. "Dozens of civilians and some fighters have handed themselves over to the SDF," he told reporters at nearby Al-Omar oil field. The spokesman said foreigners were among leaving but did not specify their nationalities or if they were civilians or fighters. Police kill man who injured two in Marseille knife attack

French police on Tuesday killed a man who wounded two pedestrians in a knife attack in the southern city of Marseille, officials said. A third person suffered leg wounds from bullet fragments, police said. The knife attack occurred in the afternoon on a busy street in the centre of the port city, the second largest in France. Police said they opened fire on the assailant when he threatened them with a weapon. The reason for the attack was not immediately known.

DCW to study plight of war widows

The Delhi Commission for Women has launched a study to bring into focus the plight of war widows. DCW Chairperson Swati Maliwal said the study will help the commission ascertain the problems being faced by the war widows and their families. "The commission will undertake a study on the present condition of women whose lives have been devastated due to untimely death of their husbands in terror attacks," she said. Mailwal said it will help the commission in providing recommendations to the government for ensuring their welfare and rehabilitation. The initiative comes after 40 CRPF jawans were killed in the Pulwama terror attack on February 14. The commission has written to the Home and Defence ministries seeking names and addresses of such families. The Jharkhand Jaguar, a special task force (STF) set up to tackle left-wing extremism, has played an important role in curbing naxal menace in the state, a senior police officer said Tuesday. 'Vehicle-borne IED separates Pulwama attack from earlier fidayeen strikes'

The Pulwama terror attack was different from earlier 'fidayeen' strikes as it involved a vehicle-borne bomb with a "phenomenal" amount of explosives, a senior Army officer said here Tuesday. Lieutenant General S K Saini, General Officer Commander-in-Chief, Southern Command, also said that the strategy to deal with suicide attacks is continuously revised. A suicide bomber rammed a vehicle into a CRPF convoy on February 14 in Pulwama district in south Kashmir, killing 40 jawans. Speaking to reporters at Southern Command Investiture Ceremony here, Lt Gen Saini said there had been fidayeen (suicide) attacks involving local youth earlier. "But there was not a vehicle-borne IED (improvised explosive device) except in an incident in which a vehicle IED was used in 2005 in the Valley... However, that did not cause much damage," he said. Truck driver injured after allegedly being shot at by security forces in JK

A truck driver was critically injured when he was allegedly fired upon by security forces for jumping a check point in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district, police said Tuesday. Naresh Kumar (27), a resident of Hiranagar area in Kathua district, was signalled to stop by security forces near a checkpoint at Veer-Boomi park along the Jammu-Pathankot highway, but he did not pay any heed and tried to speed away, a police official said. Getting suspicious, he said security forces allegedly fired a few shots, resulting in bullet injuries to the driver. The incident occurred around 12.45 am on Tuesday.The injured driver was initially shifted to a local hospital and later referred to the government medical college hospital in Jammu for specialised treatment, the official said. He said the condition of the driver was stated to be "critical". Police have taken cognisance of the incident and started investigations, he said.
