Fishermen from TN attacked by SL counterparts

Sri Lankan fishermen allegedly hurled petrol bombs at the boats of fishermen from here in Tamil Nadu and threatened them for using banned fishing nets and snapping their nets. According to Lucas, one of the fishermen who returned here Sunday, the petrol bombs hurled by the Sri Lankan fishermen missed the target and fell into the sea. He said the Sri Lankan fishermen threatened them saying their boats would be set on fire if they returned to the island nation's waters for fishing. Twenty-four Sri Lankan fishermen, who came in six boats, had allegedly attacked them, Lucas said, adding that over 40 fishing nets were also snapped by them.

Lt Gen Manoj Pande takes charge of Gajraj Corps

The command of Indian Army's Frontier Gajraj Corps Sunday changed hands from Lt Gen Gurpal Singh Sangha to Lt Gen Manoj Pande, a defence spokesperson said. Pande who has served in important command and staff appointments, both in Jammu and Kashmir and the North East, brings with him immense operational experience. He comes to Gajraj Corps from Pune, where he was the Chief of Staff in Headquarters Southern Command. "The General Officer has served in the UN mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea as the Chief Engineer. For his illustrative service, he has been awarded Ati Vishisht Sewa Medal and the Vishisht Seva Medal," the spokesperson said. Sangha, who was replaced by Pande, had an eventful tenure of over an year at Tezpur during which the formation carried out its duties in the Kameng Sector as well as in the counter insurgency operations in Lower and Central Assam, he said.

Maoists kill BJP MLC's uncle in Bihar, torch 10 vehicles

Maoists shot dead the uncle of a BJP MLC, set a house and 10 vehicles on fire in Bihar's Aurangabad district, a senior police officer said Sunday. Superintendent of Police Satya Prakash said the Maoists attacked Sudi Bigaha village under the jurisdiction of Deo Police Station late on Saturday night, during which a man identified as Narendra Singh (55) was shot dead. Singh is the uncle of Rajan Kumar Singh, a BJP member of Bihar Legislative Council, he said. According to the SP, the Maoists fired several rounds and set 10 vehicles on fire, including three tractors parked at Narendra Singh's house. The Maoists also set a house belonging to one Dhananjay Singh, a dafadar with Deo police station, on fire located near Sudi Bigaha village, SP said. Coast Guard Raising Day: 9 ships carry out operation demo

Nine Indian Coast Guard ships took part in a two-day operation demo here to commemorate the 42ndRaising Day of the force. The ICG ships that took part in the demo, organised under the aegis of Coast Guard Commander (Eastern Seaboard), were Shaurya, SamudraPaheredar, Shaunak, Vigraha, Rani Rushmoni, Rani Avantibai, Arnvesh, C 438 and C 430. Over 2,500 family members and civil dignitaries sailed on board Coast Guard ships to witness the various exercises and drills as part of the demo that concluded here Sunday. 4 rifles of a Cong MLC's PSO gone missing: Police

Four rifles belonging to personal security officers of a Congress legislator have gone missing from his official residence here in Srinagar, police said Sunday. The weapons of Congress leader and Member of Legislative Council Muzaffar Parray's PSOs went missing from the guard room of his official residence in Jawahar Nagar area of the city, a police official said. He said one of the four PSOs of the protected person complained Sunday that the rifles have gone missing from their trunks in the guard room at Parray's residence. Parray was not at his official residence when the incident took place, the official said. 15 suspected jihadists killed in joint French-Niger op

Some 15 suspected jihadists have been killed near the Niger-Mali border by a joint franco-nigerien task force, the French military high command said. "On the night of December 27 (...) an air raid mounted by fighters and Tiger attack helicopters struck" jihadists gathered near Tongo Tongo, in southwestern Niger, the high command said in a tweet overnight Saturday to Sunday. Tongo Tongo was the site of an ambush on October 4, 2017 where jihadists killed five Nigerien and four US special forces' soldiers. Nigerien and French soldiers, backed by helicopters, took control of several key positions in the area before mounting a 48-hour sweep. Suspected militants loot rifles from J&K legislator's residence

Some suspected militants looted four AK-47 rifles from the residence of a legislator here on Sunday.The incident took place at the house of Congress Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Muzaffar Parray, who resides in Jawahar Nagar area of the city.Police have filed a case and this regard and an alert has been sounded in Srinagar to nab the suspect terrorists. Pakistan procuring 600 tanks to strengthen capability along border with India: intelligent Sources

Pakistan has drawn up an ambitious plan to procure close to 600 battle tanks including T-90 tanks from Russia, primarily to bolster its military might along the border with India, intelligence sources said sunday. Most of the tanks Pakistan was procuring will be able to hit targets at a range of 3 to 4 km, the sources told PTI. Apart from battle tanks, Pakistan Army is also procuring 245 150mm SP Mike-10 guns from Italy out of which it has already received 120 guns, they said. Searches launched after suspected ultras exchanged fire with soldiers in Jammu

Security forces Sunday launched a search operation after two suspected persons, believed to be terrorists, exchanged fire with army personnel manning a post at a camp in the outskirts of Jammu, defence sources said. An army guard noticed suspicious movement of two persons near Ratnuchak camp around 01:50 AM and challenged them, the sources said. They said the suspected persons opened fire, prompting retaliation by the army personnel guarding the post. No one was injured in the brief exchange of firing, the sources said, adding the suspected ultras fled the scene under the cover of darkness. The whole area bordering Samba district was sealed and a search operation is underway to track down the fleeing suspects, the sources said.

5 arrested in suspected Dutch terror attack plot

Dutch and German police on Saturday arrested five people suspected of preparing a terrorist act in the Netherlands. Dutch police said in a statement that four suspects were detained in Rotterdam and officers searched multiple locations. The statement said the investigation would continue to determine the nature and scale of the alleged threat. It provided no details. In neighbouring Germany, police announced the arrest of a Syrian man suspected of involvement in preparations for a terror attack in the Netherlands.
