Yemen rebels mobilise to fight ahead of UN envoy visit

Yemeni rebels have said they are ready to mobilise more fighters to the frontline despite a lull in battleground Hodeida, as the UN envoy prepares to visit the country to boost peace efforts. Dozens of Huthi rebels put on a show of strength on the outskirts of the capital Sanaa on Saturday, apparently getting ready to head towards Hodeida, a Red Sea city home to a vital port. Residents told AFP by telephone on Sunday that relative calm had held in Hodeida city since pro-government forces -- backed by a Saudi-led military coalition -- announced a pause in their offensive last week amid international calls for a ceasefire and UN-led peace efforts. UN special envoy Martin Griffiths -- whose efforts at kick-starting peace talks collapsed in September -- said on Friday that he plans to travel to rebel-held Sanaa next week to finalise arrangements for peace talks to take place in Sweden soon. Hameed Assem, a member of the rebel delegation expected to take part in the negotiations, said that

Taliban hold talks with US envoy in Qatar

The Taliban have held three days of talks with US envoy Zalmay Khalilzad in the Gulf state of Qatar, where the Afghan insurgent group has a political office, a Taliban official and another individual close to the group said Sunday. The talks are aimed at renewing the Afghan peace process and eventually winding down America's longest war. Seventeen years after the US-led invasion that ended Taliban rule, the militants control nearly half of Afghanistan and carry out near-daily attacks on local security forces and government officials. The two individuals said Khairullah Khairkhwa, the former Taliban governor of Herat, and Mohammed Fazl, a former Taliban military chief, attended the marathon talks. The two individuals spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the sensitive negotiations. US officials could not immediately be reached for comment. The State Department has refused to comment on reported talks with the Taliban. A third individual with ...

Somalia holds first boxing competition since civil war

Somalia has held its first boxing competition in more than three decades, with young fighters in the conflict-torn nation dreaming of a career in international rings. The three-day lightweight boxing competition that wrapped up Sunday took place in the capital Mogadishu, where athletes squared off in a ring set up on a basketball court surrounded by ruined buildings that bore witness to the country's long conflict. The fighters were cheered by dozens of enthusiastic residents of the capital, many of whom had never seen or heard of boxing before in a country where football and basketball are far more popular, even before the war when such competitions were rare. "Boxing in Somalia stopped after the civil war and it is now reviving with the fact that the country is recovering from the war," said Awil Gelle Ahmed, deputy chairman of the country's national boxing federation. In Iraq, bloody tribal custom now classed as 'terrorism'

A bloody, age-old custom used by Iraq's powerful tribes to mete out justice has come under fire, with authorities classifying it as a "terrorist act" punishable by death. For centuries, Iraqi clans have used their own system to resolve disputes, with tribal dignitaries bringing together opposing sides to mediate in de facto "hearings". If one side failed to attend such a meeting, the rival clan would fire on the absentee's home or that of fellow tribesmen, a practice known as the "degga ashairiya" or "tribal warning". But in an age when Iraq's vast rural areas and built-up cities alike are flooded with weapons outside state control, the "degga" may be deadlier than ever. A recent dispute between two young men in a teashop in the capital's eastern district of Sadr City escalated to near-fatal proportions, leaving a 40-year-old policeman with a broken hip and severely damaged abdomen. His cousin Abu Tayba said the policeman was "wounded in a stray bullet during a 'degga' on a nearby ...

Woman's death casts shadow over France's 'yellow vest' protests

A protester was accidently killed and more than 220 injured as tens of thousands of people blocked roads across France in a "yellow vest" protest against high fuel prices, which has channelled anger at stagnant spending under President Emmanuel Macron. Nearly 283,000 people were estimated to have taken part in more than 2,000 protests at roundabouts and on major highways and thoroughfares across the country on Saturday, the Interior Ministry said. Some 227 people were injured -- seven seriously, including a police officer -- and 117 detained, with 73 then taken into police custody. Although most of the blockades were carried out without incident, tempers flared at times as some drivers confronted the protesters or tried to force their way through. In the eastern Savoie region, a 63-year-old woman was killed when a mother trying to take her daughter to see a doctor panicked after protesters surrounded their car, and suddenly accelerated into the crowd. The driver, who police said was ..
