C'garh govt's fight against Naxalism hollow, weak: Cong leader

Congress leader Jaiveer Shergill Sunday said the Chhattisgarh government's fight against Naxalism in the state was "hollow and weak". He was speaking a day after four Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers were killed, and two injured, after Naxals blew up a bullet-proof bunker (BPB) vehicle in the poll-bound state's Bijapur district. The incident had occurred around 4 pm near CRPF's Murdanda camp under Awapalli police station limits, when the paramilitary force's 168th battalion was out on an "area domination" operation. Addressing a press conference here Sunday, Shergill, a national media panelist of the Congress, said Saturday's Naxal attack had proved that the BJP government in the state had failed to contain the Maoist menace despite being in power for 15 years. "The Raman Singh government's combat against Naxalism has been hollow and weak," Shergill alleged. Shergill said that the state had witnessed 23 major Naxal attacks in the past two years in which 96 ...

'Have you news of my boy?': Kipling's vain search for lost son

The British poet and writer Rudyard Kipling, an ardent supporter of his country's entry into World War I, did everything he could to make sure his only son would join the fight. Yet just a few weeks after John Kipling touched French soil on the day of his 18th birthday, he was reported missing during the devastating Battle of Loos on September 27, 1915. His father and mother Carrie would spend the next several years desperately searching for him, hoping against all odds that he might have survived. It was not until 1919 that Kipling publicly acknowledged his son was probably dead, one of the 1.1 million soldiers lost by the British Empire in the war. The author of "The Jungle Book", the first Briton to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature, fiercely defended the war as a patriotic duty for all able-bodied men. He threw himself into the government's propaganda efforts, and is believed to have popularised the slur "Hun" in reference to the German foe. But John, who hoped to enlist ..

Former S.Africa president FW de Klerk hospitalised: foundation

South Africa's last apartheid era president FW de Klerk has been hospitalised with a lung condition, his foundation said Saturday, adding that the former leader had undergone successful treatment. The 82-year-old was admitted to a hospital in Cape Town, the FW de Klerk foundation said in a statement. "He underwent a successful procedure this morning and it is expected that he will be discharged from hospital some time next week," it added. IS kills 68 US-backed fighters in eastern Syria: monitor

The Islamic State group has killed at least 68 US-backed fighters battling to oust the jihadists from their eastern Syria holdout of Hajin, a war monitor said Saturday. IS late Friday dispatched suicide bombers as part of a counter-attack against the Syrian Democratic Forces, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, raising the death toll from an earlier figure of 41. The SDF fighters, who are backed by US-led coalition air strikes, were killed overnight, the Britain-based Observatory said. "The death toll has increased due to the discovery of new victims on the front line and the existence of 100 wounded," said Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman. A spokesman for the US-led coalition said "at this time, numbers cannot be confirmed as both sides are taking casualties as this difficult fight... continues". A "sandstorm allowed an ISIS counterattack, which was surprising given the conditions, but now the air is clear, the coalition will continue to increase air and fire support to ..
