Unknown gunmen abducted a 45-year-old man from Sopore area in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district, police said Sunday. Mushtaq Ahmad Mir was abducted by unknown gunmen, who barged into his house in Harwan area in the north Kashmir district, Saturday night, a police official said. He said a case was registered and a search launched to rescue the abducted person.
Two civilians were reported missing along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, police said Sunday. Ghulam Rasool and Bashir Ahmad, both residents of Sawjian sector, had gone for some work along the LoC on September 12 but did not return, the officials said, adding they might have inadvertently crossed to other side. They said the family members of the two filed a complaint in the police station concerned on Saturday evening. Police have taken cognizance of the incident and are investigating the matter, Senior Superintendent of Police Rajiv Pandey said.

An encounter broke out Sunday between militants and security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district, police said. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Dar Ganie Gund village in Tral's Aribal area in the south Kashmir district Sunday morning, a police official said. He said the operation was launched after receiving specific intelligence inputs about the presence of militants in the area. The encounter broke out after the militants fired upon the forces who retaliated, the official said. The gunfight is on and further details are being collected, he said.

Air assaults and missile strikes have increased in recent months. "The US airstrike was conducted against militants after US and partner forces came under attack," US Africa Command said in a statement. US forces also partner with the United Nations-backed African Union Mission in Somalia, which aims to counter the threat from Al-Shabaab jihadists. Seven Pakistani troops, including an officer, and nine terrorists were killed Saturday in a fierce gun battle in the country's northwestern region along the Afghan border. A man received bullet injuries on his lower abdomen inside an army camp at Shalbagaan in West Tripura district Saturday evening, police said. The man identified as Bharat Bahadur Thapa (50) is a retired army personnel and is engaged in some sort of job at the army camp after retirement, they said. Superintendent of Police, West Tripura, Ajit Pratap Singh said, "the personnel received injuries inside the army camp and a FIR was lodged with the Airport police station here. It was reported to be an incident of suicide attempt. However, investigation is on." Thapa was was rushed to GB Hospital and admitted at the Trauma Care Centre of the hospital, police added.

Eight children, including four siblings, were killed in Afghanistan when a mortar shell they were playing with exploded, relatives said Saturday, adding to the ever-growing civilian toll in the 17-year war. Another six children were wounded in the blast on Friday, including two who had lost limbs and were in a critical condition in a hospital in the northwestern province of Faryab. All the children were aged between five and 12. "They found an unexploded mortar shell and brought it near our house," Shukrullah, an uncle of four of the children killed, told AFP. A constable attached to the 7th Battalion of Tamil Nadu Special Police attempted suicide by consuming poison Saturday at nearby Tirupur, police said. Suresh, hailing from Krishnagiri district and married three months ago, returned home after night duty early this morning. His wife noticed him struggling to breathe and immediately took him to a government hospital, with the help of neighbours, police said. Police quoted the doctors as saying that Suresh had consumed some poison and his condition was serious. Police are investigating why the constable attempted to end his life.
Sri Lanka's economic and political stability has been affected due to infighting between President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, former president Mahinda Rajapaksa claimed on Saturday.
