Hemingway story from 1956 published for first time Hemingway story

The themes and trappings are familiar for an Ernest Hemingway narrative: Paris, wartime, talk of books and wine and the scars of battle. But the story itself has been little known beyond the scholarly community for decades: "A Room on the Garden Side," written in 1956, is being published for the first time. The brief, World War II-era fiction appears this week in the summer edition of The Strand Magazine, a literary quarterly which has released obscure works by Raymond Chandler, John Steinbeck and others. "Hemingway's deep love for his favorite city as it is just emerging from Nazi occupation is on full display, as are the hallmarks of his prose," Strand Managing Editor Andrew F Gulli wrote in an editorial note. Kirk Curnutt, a board member of The Hemingway Society, contributed an afterword for the Strand, saying that "the story contains all the trademark elements readers love in Hemingway." "Steeped in talk of Marcel Proust, Victor Hugo, and Alexandre Dumas, and featuring a long ...

'Our boys are coming home;' Pence welcomes Korean War dead

In an emotional and solemn ceremony, the remains of dozens of presumed casualties from the Korean War were escorted by military honour guards onto US soil, 65 years after an armistice ended the conflict and weeks after President Donald Trump received a commitment from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for their return. The US military believes the bones are those of US servicemen and potentially servicemen from other United Nations member countries who fought alongside the US on behalf of South Korea during the war. What is expected to be an exhaustive analysis and identification process will soon begin. "Some have called the Korean War the 'forgotten war.' But today, we prove these heroes were never forgotten," Vice President Mike Pence said at a ceremony welcoming the remains, which were flown from South Korea earlier in the day. "Today, our boys are coming home." Each container was accompanied by one Marine, one sailor, one soldier and one airman. They set them gently on risers lined

US Korean War dead heading home at last

Sixty-five years after the Korean War ended, the remains of dozens of American soldiers killed during the brutal conflict are finally coming home. Yesterday's repatriation marks an important step after US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held a summit, during which Kim agreed to send home the war dead. Trump, who has faced criticism over the pace of progress since the June meeting, praised Kim for "keeping his word," and Vice President Mike Pence is set to meet families when the remains arrive back in the US at a ceremony in Hawaii. Caskets carrying the 55 sets of remains were draped in the blue-and-white flag of the United Nations. Many nations fought in the Korean War, but most of the cases are thought to contain US troops. More than 35,000 Americans were killed on the Korean peninsula during the 1950-1953 war, with 7,700 of these US troops still listed as missing in action -- most of them in North Korea. It could take scientists and historians years to ...

UN agency warns of another possible Yemen cholera outbreak

The UN children's agency warned today of the potential for another cholera outbreak in war-torn Yemen after airstrikes hit water facilities and other civilian infrastructure in the port city of Hodeida. UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore said in a statement the airstrikes earlier this week damaged a sanitation facility and a station that supplies most of the city's water. Impoverished Yemen has been devastated by a stalemated three-year civil war that has left around two-thirds of Yemen's population of 27 million relying on aid, and over 8 million at risk of starving. "Two days ago, we received reports that a UNICEF-supported warehouse containing humanitarian provisions, including hygiene and water-related supplies, was hit by two airstrikes," Fore said. She said a UNICEF-supported sanitation center in the district of Zabid in Hodeida came under attack on July 28, damaging the facility's fuel tank. India welcomes US decision to designate 3 Pakistanis as global terrorists

India today welcomed the US's announcement to name three Pakistan-based LeT terrorists as 'specially designated global terrorists' and said the move vindicates its stand that terror groups continue to operate from the neighbouring country with "impunity". "India welcomes the announcements made yesterday by the US Departments of State and Treasury in which three Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) terrorists and terror financiers have been named as Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGT)," Kumar said. Senior Maha minister says simultaneous polls desirable

A senior BJP minister in Maharashtra today said that simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections would be preferable, as it would save on costs. Assembly elections are due in Maharashtra next year. Speaking to reporters, state Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar said the government spent Rs 18 crore on Lok Sabha by-elections to Palghar and Bhandara-Gondia in May. At this rate, the government may end up spending Rs 864 crore for conducting elections to 48 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state (during general elections), he said. "Therefore, if Lok Sabha and Assembly elections are held simultaneously, it will save tax payers' money and the government can go ahead with development works," Mungantiwar said. "The model code of conduct becomes a major hurdle which brings to halt all development works. In last four years, the code of conduct was imposed for 351 days, which meant that almost a full year was wasted," the minister said. The state government recently set up a ...

IS fighters surrender in Afghanistan's north, officials say

NATO urged caution, saying it was premature to write the group off in the region. The surrender came after weeks of intense fighting between IS and the Taliban in Jowzjan province in the north, and continuing pressure from Afghan and US forces. It also came as the Afghan army took over security in the eastern city of Jalalabad, capital of Nangarhar province which is an IS stronghold, after a wave of attacks mostly claimed by the group. In Jowzjan, Afghan officials described the surrender as a turning point. "Their fighters have surrendered in the past, but this time it is more important because the Daesh leader and deputy surrendered with more than 150 fighters all at once," Mohammad Hanif Rezaee, spokesman for the army's 209 Corps in the north, told AFP, using an Arabic acronym for IS. ...
