Voting ends in Pakistan; 35 killed in suicide blast, poll-related violence

Voting in a tense election to choose a new government in Pakistan ended today with at least 35 people being killed in an Islamic State suicide attack and poll-related violence during the day. The voting started at 8 AM local time on more than 85,000 polling stations and ended at 6 PM. The results would be announced within 24 hours.

NRC: Centre rushes 22,000 CAPF personnel to Assam

The Centre has sent over 22,000 central paramilitary troops in order to beef up security in Assam and adjoining states in view of the publication of the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC). The Union Home Ministry has directed these units to be deployed immediately in the vulnerable areas of the state, officials said. "A total of 220 companies of the central armed police forces (CAPFs) are being sent to the state in view of the NRC," a senior official said. The largest contingent among the forces is from the CRPF (53 companies) followed by Sashastra Seema Bal (41), BSF (40), ITBP (27), CISF (20) and Railway Protection Force (5). A total of 34 companies of the special auxillary police are also being sent, they said. About 105 CAPF companies are being rotated and utilised for law and order duties from within the state, they said. One company of paramilitary comprises 100 personnel. Afghan official: 7 wounded in bomb blast in the north

An Afghan official says that seven civilians were wounded by a bomb that exploded in northern Faryab province. Abdul Karim Yuresh, the provincial police chief's spokesman, says a small child is among the wounded in today's blast that took place inside a mobile phone store in the provincial capital Maimana. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. Separately, in eastern Ghazni province around 40 students from a religious school were detained by Afghan security forces on suspicious of having links to the Taliban, according to Arif Noori, provincial governor's spokesman. Noori said the security forces conducted a raid late Tuesday in Andar district and the suspects are under investigation. Zabihullah Mujahid, Taliban spokesman, said in a statement that Afghan security forces detained innocent people from the school.

Death toll tops 100 in IS attacks on Syria's Sweida: monitor

A string of attacks by the Islamic State group in Syria's southern province of Sweida today killed 102 people, including 35 civilians, a monitor said giving a new death toll. The attacks which included suicide blasts also killed 67 regime fighters most of whom were residents who had picked up weapons to defend their villages, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitoring group.

Maratha Kranti Morcha calls off Mumbai bandh

Maratha outfit Maratha Kranti Morcha called off their state-wide bandh, after staging intensified protests for almost two days demanding reservations in government jobs and education for the community.The pro-reservation group, which earlier called for a peaceful strike, resorted to violence in several instances.Earlier today, the protestors set several vehicles on fire and also vandalized public buses in Navi Mumbai's Ghansoli and Wagle estate area of Thane, causing disruption in bus services. Indonesia seeks ban on Islamic State linked group

Indonesia's government has asked a court to ban Jemaah Anshorut Daulah, a militant network linked to the Islamic State group, hoping to strangle its funding and support. Also known as JAD, the network of almost two dozen extremist organizations has been implicated in numerous attacks in Indonesia and was designated a terror organization by the U.S. last year. Chief Prosecutor Heri Jerman told the South Jakarta District Court on Wednesday that declaring the group illegal would empower stronger police action against it. He said funds and property could be seized and members not actively involved in attacks could be arrested. A radical cleric who founded JAD, Aman Abdurrahman, was sentenced to death last month for inciting attacks including a 2016 suicide bombing at a Starbucks in Jakarta.

Maratha agitation: traffic disrupted on Mumbai-Bengaluru

The agitation for quota for the Maratha community turned violent in Satara city in western Maharashtra today, with protesters disrupting the traffic on the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway. Satara district superintendent of police Sandip Patil received minor injuries when confronting a mob. "I received minor bruises, but I am completely all right," Patil told PTI, adding that police were clearing the highway. Police fired tear gas shells and used baton-charge to disperse the protesters, said another officer. "Agitators turned violent on the highway near the city, pelted stones and damaged a police vehicle," he said. 35 killed, 67 injured in violence across Pakistan on Election Day

An Islamic State suicide bomber blew himself up outside a polling station killing 31 people in Pakistan's southwestern Quetta city today and four others were murdered in poll-related violence as the country went to polls to elect a new government. The suicide bomber blew himself up after he was stopped from entering the Tameer-i-Nau Education Complex school, which is serving as a polling station in 'sensitive' NA-260 constituency in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, police said. Earlier reports had said the bomber targeted a police van. IED detected in Nowgam area of Srinagar

The security forces today averted a major tragedy after they detected and defused an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by militants in Nowgam area of the city, police said. The security forces detected an IED planted near Nala Kadal in Nowgam area on the busy Parimpora-Panthachowk bypass road this morning, a police official said. Militants lob grenade at post office in Pulwama, no causalities

Militants today hurled a grenade towards a post office in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir but no causalities or damage were reported, police said. Two CoBRA personnel hurt after stepping over spike trap in

Two personnel of the CRPF's CoBRA unit were injured today when they inadvertently stepped over a spike trap laid by naxals in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, the police said. A team of the Central Reserve Police Force's elite Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) was out on an area domination operation this morning, a CRPF official told PTI. While cordoning off a forest patch near Tarrem village, located around 450 km from the state capital Raipur, two personnel of the CoBRA 204th battalion inadvertently stepped over iron spikes hidden under thick vegetation on the ground by naxals, he said. The two personnel - a sub-inspector and a constable - sustained minor injuries on their legs. Patidar quota agitation leader Hardik Patel today said the BJP's "Hitlershahi" cannot prevent him from fighting for "truth, farmers, youth and poor", soon after he was awarded a two-year jail term in connection with a rioting case. A sessions court in Visnagar town of Gujarat's Mehsana district today sentenced Hardik Patel and two of his aides -- Lalji Patel and A K Patel -- to two years imprisonment in a case of rioting and arson lodged against him and 16 others in July 2015. Later, the three were granted bail by the same court. While the court held the three persons guilty of rioting, arson, damage to property and unlawful assembly, it let off the other 14 accused for want of enough evidence against them. Maratha bandh: Three policemen injured in violence

Violence marred the Maratha community's bandh today as protesters threw stones at policemen in the neighbouring Navi Mumbai township and Satara district, injuring three personnel. The police retaliated and cane-charged protesters, fired plastic bullets and lobbed tear gas shells at them, an official said. Satara's Superintendent of Police Sandeep Patil sustained a minor injury while two policemen were injured at Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai, he said. Protesters who gathered at Kalamboli blocked the Mumbai-Goa and Mumbai-Pune highways, he said. Cong to set up training centre for aspirants of armed forces

Drug smuggler nabbed, 2 kg charas seized

Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel nabbed an alleged smuggler carrying 2 kg charas valued at Rs 30 lakh close to the Indo-Nepal border here, said an official of the paramilitary force today. Acting on a tip-off, the SSB personnel conducted a joint operation with the local police yesterday. The smuggler was identified as Radhey Shyam, who is from Bholapur village under Itwa police station in the district, the official said. SSB assistant commandant Gaurav Kumar said the accused was moving towards India from the border area when the paramilitary personnel made a bid to nab him. Two LeT terrorists killed in encounter in J-K

Two Lashker-e-Taiba terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces in south Kashmir's Anantnag town this morning following an intelligence tip off about their presence inside a house, police said. At least 34 people were killed, including 31 in a deadly suicide blast outside a polling station in Pakistan's Quetta city and 36 others injured as several incidents of violence were reported as the country went to polls.
