In a joint statement today, the EU delegation and the embassies of Britain, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania, Canada and Norway said they have written to Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena regarding the issue. There is a rising crime wave in Sri Lanka, including gang-related killings, narcotics, robberies and sex crimes, leading to a public outcry demanding executions. The government has responded by saying it will execute prisoners who have allegedly taken advantage of a moratorium on executions to continue their drug trade from prison. Sri Lanka last executed a prisoner in 1976 and has since maintained a moratorium.
Four unidentified persons looted Rs 3.96 lakh from a petrol pump in Bihar's Bhojpur district in the early hours today. Superintendent of Police Avkash Kumar said that the armed miscreants, wearing masks, looted the amount from the cash box of the pump at Gangi, under the jurisdiction of Town police station, and decamped with it. There were three employees of the petrol pump when the incident took place at around 2 am, the SP said. The miscreants also damaged the CCTV installed at the pump, making it difficult to identify the culprits. Raids were being conducted to nab the miscreants.
Two soldiers were injured in an encounter with militants in forests of Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir today, the Army said. The encounter broke out in the forests of Kupwara district last night. Two soldiers were injured in the gunbattle and have been evacuated for medical attention, an Army official said. The operation was going on when reports last came in.
An Afghan official says the Taliban stormed a police checkpoint in eastern Nangarhar province, killing seven policemen. Provincial police chief Ghulam Sanayee Stanikzai said today that the attack took place the previous night in the district of Ghani Kahil. He says that five Taliban fighters were killed in the attack. Stanikzai says that in Khogyani district, also in Nangarhar province, a government airstrike on Sunday night left 20 Taliban fighters dead. There was no statement from the Taliban on either the Ghani Kahil attack or the airstrike. Yesterday, a suicide bomber on foot struck outside a ministry building in the capital, Kabul, killing seven people and wounding 15. Last month, a suicide bombing near the same ministry killed 12 people and wounding 31 others, mostly government employees.

At least 10 civilians have been killed in a possible jihadist attack in Mali's northeast, close to the border with Niger, according to armed Touareg groups and local authorities. More than 100 people, including numerous civilians, have been killed in recent months in the unstable region, where jihadist groups who have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group operate. Yesterday, "armed bandits linked to local criminal groups operating on the Mali-Niger border overran Injagalane," a statement by two Touareg armed groups said, referring to the jihadists. On July 5, 2006, riots broke out in Bhiwandi after local residents opposed the construction of a police station on a 2,000 square metre plot near Quarter Gate Masjid. Two policemen, identified as Ramesh Jagtap and Balasaheb Gangurde, were lynched by a rioting mob. Two persons were killed in police firing. Over 30 State Transport buses were also torched during the riots.
Naxals allegedly killed a village sarpanch (headman) in Chhattisgarh's insurgency-hit Dantewada district, police today said. Pose Ram (42), sarpanchof Paurnar village, was stabbed to death last night, a local police official told PTI. As per the preliminary information, a group of Naxals entered Ram's house and killed him, and also beat up his son before leaving the spot, the official said. A police team visited the village this morning and took the body to a local hospital for autopsy, he said. The Naxals may have killed the sarpanch to express their opposition to a proposed bridge across the Indravati river at Paurnar, the official said, adding that a search was on for the assailants.

Sri Lanka's Office of Missing Persons said today it will launch an impartial probe into the complaints on thousands of people who have allegedly gone "missing" after surrendering to the military during the brutal civil war against the LTTE. The Office of Missing Persons (OMP) aims to bring in reparations to the victims of the nearly three-decade long armed conflict which ended in 2009. "I have said the OMP will impartially and scientifically examine any specific complaint relating to persons who surrendered to the forces," OMP Chairman, Saliya Peiris tweeted. Peiris remarks came after he and his officials visited the northern Jaffna town yesterday to meet with the relatives of the missing persons. Boko Haram jihadists overran a military base in northeast Nigeria after a ferocious firefight, military and vigilante sources said today, the second assault on the country's forces in two days. The militants on Saturday evening invaded a base holding hundreds of soldiers in Yobe state -- where they abducted over 100 girls from a school earlier this year -- in an attack that lasted for hours, a military source told AFP on condition of anonymity. "Boko Haram terrorists attacked troops of the 81 Division Forward Brigade at Jilli village in Geidam district. The terrorists came in huge numbers around 7:30 pm (1830 GMT) and overran the base after a fierce battle that lasted till 9:10 pm," said the military source. "The base had 734 troops.
