A CRPF jawan was killed and a civilian injured in a brief exchange of fire between militants and security forces in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said today. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation at Chinar Bagh, Mohalla Takiya, in Pulwama late on Friday following information about presence of militants there, a police official said. "As soon as the search party approached the suspect's house, militants hiding inside fired indiscriminately due to which the house owner Bashir Ahmad sustained an injury and is stated to be stable now," the official said. He said during the initial exchange of fire between militants and security forces, a CRPF jawan sustained injuries. The jawan, Mandeep Kumar, later succumbed to injuries. The militants, taking advantage of the darkness, fled from the spot, he said adding the operation was called off early this morning.

Sevak Ram, a Naxal 'commander', was killed in an encounter with police in a forest near Ravandiggi village, a police official told Bhasha/ PTI over phone. A team of district police was patrolling the area after getting information about presence of Naxals under the Mainpur police station limits yesterday, he said. The team came under fire near Ravandiggi village today and retaliated, he said. Police say a suspected Islamic militant fatally stabbed a police officer at a police detention centre near Indonesia's capital before being fatally shot by other officers. National police spokesman Setyo Wasisto said the attack occurred late yesterday at the headquarters of the elite Mobile Brigade police in Depok, on Jakarta's southern outskirts, hours after 155 Islamic militant prisoners who earlier took over the headquarters and killed five officers surrendered to police. Wasisto said Friday the attacker used a hidden knife to stab an officer who was questioning him about why he was near the headquarters. Separately yesterday, police arrested four suspected militants who allegedly planned to attack the headquarters following the prison clash. Police said two of them resisted arrest and were shot and injured.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA), on Friday, registered two cases against Canada-based, suspected Khalistani terrorist, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, one in connection with the 2016 terrorist attack in Punjab and second for conspiring to attack alleged right-wing leaders in India.Initial probes were conducted by the Punjab Police in the cases, who had also filed an FIR in 2016, however, the cases were eventually handed over to the NIA as it was a broader case of Khalistani terror activities in the state.According to media reports, Nijjar is a known terror mastermind and an accused in the 2007 blast that killed six and injured 42 in the city of Ludhiana in Punjab. A policeman was killed by militants during a weapon snatching bid in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir today, police said. The militants attempted to force their way inside a guard post at Wardwan in Soibug area of the central Kashmir district, a police spokesman said. He said the militants appeared outside the guard post and held-up selection grade constable Shamim Ahmad who was unarmed and was going to offer Friday prayers at a nearby mosque, he said. Ahmad was asked by the militants to lead them towards the guard post, the spokesman said, adding however, he raised an alarm and the alert jawans inside the post foiled the weapon snatching bid. In the process, the cop was injured, he said. Later, the spokesman said, Ahmad, a resident of Check Hanjan Yaripora in Kulgam district of south Kashmir, succumbed to the injuries. All arms and ammunition in the post were safe, the spokesman said, adding the area had been cordoned off. The police have registered a case, he said.
The army and Assam police arrested the leader of the militant outfit Karbi Peoples Liberation Tigers (KPLT) and seized a huge quantity of M16 ammunition during a joint operation in Karbi Anglong district, said a senior police official today. The rebel was identified as Sing Timung alias Binong Timung alias Songriso Tungjang who was the acting chairman of the outfit when its chairman Donri Kramsa was in jail, the district superintendent of police Siva Prasad Ganjala here. The Army's 12 Gorkha Rifles and police from Dokmoka jointly searched the courtyard of Timung's uncle's house at Belughat yesterday and found 301 bullets of M16 ammunition, Ganjala said. A case has been registered in Dokmoka police station under the Arms Act, the SP said. The KPLT is dedicated to forming an autonomous Karbi State out of Assam.
Armed men stabbed to death three persons, including two women, and injured another three people in Kasganj city in western Uttar Pradesh, police said today. The miscreants barged into the residence of Balwant Singh last night in Nabinagar area and tied his wife Champa Devi, daughter-in-law Maya Devi and another person identified as Ramdas to a bed and beat them with iron rods, police said. They then stabbed them persons to death. Another three people seriously injured in the incident have been admitted to a hospital, police said. Pakistan's Chief Justice today termed as "carnage" the targeted killings of the minority Hazara community members, asserting that no words are enough to condemn such "unfortunate" attacks. The Sri Lankan Army has set up a special international directorate tasked with countering allegations of war crimes, Army Chief Mahesh Senanayake has said. The directorate which was set up last month would collate relevant information to defend the Army in its conduct during the final phase of the military conflict with the LTTE. Sri Lanka Army and the LTTE were both accused of committing war crimes. Sri Lanka faced severe international condemnation with UN Human Rights Council passing resolutions to hold the country's government accountable for war crimes. Militants today attacked a guard post in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, triggering a gunfight with security forces in which a policeman was critically injured, a police official said. He said the militant attack on the post at Wardwan in Soibug area of central Kashmir was successfully repulsed by the police. However, he said, a policeman was critically injured and has been admitted to a hospital. All arms and ammunition there are safe, the official said, adding the area has been cordoned off. There have been several such attacks recently when militants attempted to snatch rifles from the policemen on duty.
Police defused a World War II bomb Friday at a construction site in the heart of Hong Kong after more than 1,000 people were evacuated from the area, in the third such discovery in the city this year.
