UN chief: Syria must respond to chemical weapons questions

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says Syria's failure to answer questions from the international chemical weapons watchdog about its chemical weapons program "remains a source of very deep concern." He says the Syrian government partially addressed some questions raised by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons but "other questions regrettably remain unanswered." In a letter circulated today transmitting the OPCW's latest report to the Security Council, Guterres said "profoundly alarming allegations" of chemical weapons use in the Damascus suburb of Douma on April 7 underline the need for a new body to determine responsibility for chemical attacks. Russia vetoed a Western-backed resolution in November that would have renewed the joint UN-OPCW body assessing blame for chemical attacks. EU chief: Don't judge Karl Marx for his followers' crimes

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker says German philosopher Karl Marx shouldn't be judged for the crimes that his followers committed decades after his death. Juncker spoke today at an event commemorating the 200th anniversary of Marx's birth in the western German city of Trier. Alluding to the crimes committed by social revolutionaries in Russia, China and elsewhere, Juncker said "Marx isn't responsible for all the atrocity his alleged heirs have to answer for." Marx laid the philosophical foundations for Communism, an ideology that aims for shared ownership of the means of production and the absence of social classes. A 4.4-meter (14-feet) statue of Marx, donated by China, is to be unveiled in Trier today. A German group representing victims of Communism has criticized the Marx anniversary celebrations.
