Over 5,900 fresh troops join CISF

Over 5,900 newly trained troops have joined the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) as it looks to bolster its manpower at various critical deployments in the country. The force is tasked with guarding the country's civil airports and vital infrastructure. The troops have passed out from various CISF training institutes in the country over the week, with the latest batch of 782 women constables passing out from the Recruit Training Centre (RTC) at Arakkonam in Tamil Nadu today. "The 5,949 personnel who passed out from various training institutes of the force in the last few days will soon be deployed at some of our most critical protection units like airports and other installations," CISF director general O P Singh told PTI. Chief of Army Staff briefed on Manipur's security scenario

Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat was today briefed on the security preparedness in the insurgency-hit Manipur. The Army chief had arrived in Imphal yesterday in course of his three-day visit to the North-East states - Nagaland, Manipur and Assam. Top Army officers of 57 Mountain Division and paramilitary force Assam Rifles briefed Rawat about the operational preparedness of the security personnel in the insurgency-hit state and highlighted the efforts of the soldiers for ensuring peace, an Assam Rifles release said. Gen Rawat, urged the Army officers to continue the good work in a professional manner and in the true spirit of the force, the release said. Gen Rawat was accompanied by Lt Gen Abhay Krishna, General Officer Commanding-in-chief Eastern Army Command and Lt Gen Anil Chauhan, General Officer Commanding Spears Corps, the release added.

Uganda charges 45 Rwandans with 'terrorism'

Uganda has charged 45 Rwandans with terrorism following their arrest at the border with Tanzania earlier this month, a police spokesman said today. "We arrested 43 Rwandan suspects at the border with Tanzania on December 11. On further investigations two other suspects were arrested," police spokesman Emilian Kayima told AFP. All have been charged "with carrying forged documents, false identities and the serious charge of terrorism as their intentions were pointing to that," he said without providing more details. The suspects are being held at Nalufenya prison, east of the capital Kampala, often used to jail those accused of terrorism or involvement with rebel groups. The suspects had been living in Uganda and claim they were travelling to Tanzania as evangelists. 10 killed in terror attack on Egypt church

Ten people were killed and eight others injured in a terrorist attack on a church in Egypt's capital today, the government said. A health ministry spokesman said the attack took place when gunmen on a motorbike opened fire outside Mar Mina church in Helwan area. At least 10 people, including eight Coptic Christians, were killed in the shootout outside the south Cairo church, he said, adding, one gunman was shot dead as was a security officer. State-run MENA news agency reported that the other gunman fled the scene. The ministry said two of the injured are women, adding it employed 10 ambulances to transfer the injured to hospitals. The attack comes days before the Coptic celebration of the new year and orthodox Christmas Day on January 7. Egypt's Coptic Christian minority has been targeted by Islamic terrorists in several attacks since last year that have killed over 100 people and wounded many others.

6 killed in terror attack on church in Egypt

A terrorist attack targeted a church in Egypt today killing six people and injuring eight others, the government said. Some local media outlets reported that a group of terrorists opened fire on the church in Helwan killing at least nine people and injuring five others. Cash collection agent stage-manages daytime loot, arrested

A cash collection agent working with a private company stage-managed the loot of over Rs 23 lakh here and made it look like a daring broad daylight heist, following which he was arrested, police said today. Rs 23.86 lakh, kept in a bag, were lifted from the motorcycle of the cash collection agent by two persons on Kalidas road here on Tuesday when he parked the two-wheeler along the roadside to attend the nature's call, said Dehradun SSP Nivedita Kukreti. The agent, Ashutosh Gupta, working with Radiant Cash Managing Private Limited, raised an alarm, saying the "robbers" made away with the money after allegedly throwing chilly powder into his eyes, she said. However, the police suspected Gupta of lying as the amount looted was huge and he did not seem to have put up any resistance which is normal in case of even smaller incidents of loot, Kukreti said. TN announces gift hamper ahead of Pongal day celebrations

Tamil Nadu Government today announced a special gift hamper for ration card holders and those Sri Lankan Tamils lodged in refugee camps. To be available ahead of the Pongal Day celebrations in all the public distribution shops in the state, people with ration cards and those Sri Lankans lodged in refugee camps would receive it, Chief Minister K Palaniswami said in a release here. This would cost Rs 210 crore to the exchequer and benefit nearly 1.84 crore families, it said. The gift hamper would comprise one kg of rice and sugar, two ft long sugarcane stick, cashew and dry grapes weighing 20 grams each and five grams of cardamom, it said. The harvest festival of Pongal is celebrated on January 14 every year.

Fighting in northwestern Syria kills 66: monitor

Clashes pitting mainly jihadist and rebel fighters against regime forces backed by Russian warplanes killed at 66 people on the edge of Syria's northwestern Idlib province, a monitor said today. Turkey detains 29 suspected militants ahead of New Year's

Turkey's state-run news agency says police in the capital Ankara have detained 29 suspected Islamic State group militants, some of whom were allegedly preparing to carry out attacks during New Year celebrations. Anadolu Agency says the suspects, including foreign nationals, were detained in simultaneous raids early Friday. Anadolu says police had warrants to detain 17 other suspects. The agency says one of the suspects jumped out of a balcony to try and avoid arrest but was soon caught. Explosion hits near police station in Turkey, no one is hurt

Turkish media say a powerful explosion has occurred near a police station in the southern city of Adana but no one was hurt in the blast.
