Monsoon is expected to hit Bihar in two to five days

People of Bihar may get respite from the sweltering heat that has singed almost the entire state soon, as the southwest monsoon is expected to reach Bihar within two to five days, the met office said today. The southwest monsoon which normally enters eastern Bihar by June 10 has been delayed by 7-10 days. Cities such as Gaya recorded the highest maximum temperature at 43.3 degrees Celsius followed by Patna at 42.0 degrees Celsius, Bhagalpur 38.6 degrees Celsius and 33.7 degrees Celsius in Purnea, the met bulletin said. The weathermen has also made a forecast for pre- monsoon rains for Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur and Purnea tomorrow. It has forecast that it will be partly cloudy sky with possibility of rain or thunder or lightning accompanied by squall or hail tomorrow in Patna, the bulletin said. Dip in temperature in Delhi, rain likely tomorrow

Delhiites today got slight respite from heat as the maximum temperature settled at 36.8 degrees Celsius. The weatherman has forecast light rain in the national capital tomorrow. According to the Meteorological (MeT) department, the humidity levels oscillated between 71 per cent and 42 per cent during the day. The minimum temperature was recorded at 28.2 degrees Celsius. "There is a possibility of light rain tomorrow. The minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to hover around 38 degrees Celsius and 28 degrees Celsius respectively," the official said. Yesterday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 40 degrees and 32.2 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Rain in parts of north, northeast India; Assam flood situation worsens

Some parts of north and northeast India got some breather from hot weather conditions after it rained today, while the flood situation in Assam deteriorated affecting more than 4.5 lakh people. The weather department has predicted rain and thunderstorm late tonight in Delhi and adjoining areas. In the national capital, the maximum temperature settled at 36.8 degrees Celsius and the minimum was recorded at 28.4 degrees Celsius. The humidity level oscillated between 42 and 71 per cent, weather department officials said. Mercury dropped sharply across Punjab and Haryana after the region was lashed by rain. Chandigarh, which received rain in the morning, recorded a maximum temperature of 30.7 degrees Celsius, seven notches below normal. In Haryana, Ambala recorded a high of 30 degrees Celsius and Karnal's maximum settled at 27.5 degree Celsius, 10 notches below normal. Hot weather conditions prevail; Churu hottest at 40.9 deg C in Raj

Churu was the hottest place in Rajasthan today with a maximum temperature of 40.9 degrees Celsius with hot weather conditions prevailing in the state, a MeT official said. The Meteorological (MeT) department has forecast thunderstorm with light rains likely at isolated places in the state. Jaisalmer, Kota, Jaipur, Barmer, Bikaner recorded 40.5, 39.8, 39.7, 39.6, 39.5 degrees Celsius while Jodhpur and Ajmer recorded 38 degree Celsius each. The minimum temperature was recorded between 22.6 and 31.3 degrees Celsius in most of the cities in the state.

Southwest monsoon to revive in 5-6 days: IMD

The southwest monsoon has weakened after remaining "very active" during the first half of June, a meteorological department official said today, adding it is expected to revive in the next five-six days. The India Meteorological Department official said the "lull" in monsoon activity is normal. The northern limit of the monsoon continues to pass through Thane (including Mumbai), Ahmednagar, Buldhana, Amravati, Gondia, Titlagarh, Cuttack, Midnapore, Goalpara and Baghdogra. "The further advance of the southwest monsoon has weakened. It was very active until June 15, but there is a lull now. However, it expected to revive in the next five-six days," IMD Additional Director-General Mritunjay Mohapatra said. The southwest monsoon arrived in Kerala on June 29, three days ahead of its normal onset and, over the past a few days, it has battered parts of the western coast and the northeast. Temperatures drop sharply after rains in Pb, Hry

The maximum temperatures dropped sharply across Punjab and Haryana after the region was lashed by rains for the second day today. Chandigarh, which received rains in the morning, recorded a maximum of 30.7 degrees Celsius, down seven notches against normal limits, the Meteorological (MeT) department report said. In Haryana, Ambala recorded a high of 30 degree Celsius, down eight notches against normal while Karnal's maximum settled at 27.5 degree Celsius, down ten notches, after being lashed by heavy rains. Hisar recorded a high of 36.5 degree Celsius, down four degrees. In Punjab, Ludhiana and Patiala recorded maximum temperatures of 29.9 degree Celsius and 29.4 degree Celsius, down seven and nine notches, respectively, after receiving a heavy downpour. Amritsar, too, was lashed by rains and the maximum settled at 31.1 degree Celsius, eight degrees below normal limits. Light to moderate rains/thundershowers are likely at a few places on June 18, at isolated places on June 19 and dry .

Rain likely to lash North India in next 2 days

North India may witness rainfall in the next two days, forecasted the Indian Meteorological Department (MeT).Sunita Devi, Scientist in Met Department warned that thunderstorm, rainfall and squally winds may hit Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, western Uttar Pradesh and western Himalayan regions.As per the MeT department, the monsoon is hovering over Maharashtra in the west and parts of Odisha, West Bengal and Assam in the east and northeast India.It further said that due to the prevalence of a weak pattern, monsoon on any other parts are unlikely during next 6-7 days.Meanwhile, the residence of Delhi are facing intense heat wave and are reeling under a haze of dust brought by winds from Rajasthan, eventually raising the level of air pollution to severe category.Delhi's temperature was recorded 34 degrees in the afternoon on Sunday.

Widespread rains lash several parts of HP

Widespread rains lashed several parts of Himachal Pradesh, settling the dust even as the visibility remained poor due to mist. The visibility is expected to improve by tomorrow due to more rains in the region, Manmohan Singh, Director, local MeT office said. The dust level was higher in most places and situation in the lower hills and industrial areas was worst. Nine places in Odisha record temp above 40 degree Celsius

Odisha continues to reel under sweltering heat with nine places including state capital recording temperature above 40 degree Celsius today despite onset of monsoon in the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of heat wave in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Khurda, Angul, Bolangir and Kalahandi during next 48 hours. The nine places which recorded temperature above 40 degree Celsius are - Talcher (40.8), Chandbali (40.3), Cuttack (40), Bhubaneswar(40.2), Angul (40.9), Baripada (41.4), Bhawanipatna (40.5), Bolangir (40.3) and Titlagarh, the IMD said. The Regional Meteorological Department in Bhubaneswar attributed the sudden rise in temperature to "weakened monsoon force." Though the monsoon reached Odisha on June 8 and caused rainfall in many places, the temperature has suddenly increased as the monsoon weakened only after three days. Nepal receiving rains mixed with dust particles from Rajasthan

Nepal is receiving rains mixed with dust particles spread from desert in Rajasthan, meteorological officials said today, warning that such rain may contain chemical elements. The dust particles spread from the Indian desert mixed with the rain due to the westerly wind causing murky rain in the mid hill and southern belt of Nepal, the Meteorological Forecasting Division said. Even the Kathmandu Valley received such rain, said Meteorologist Min Kumar Aryal. He, however, said it would continue only for two days. More rainfall is needed to clear the dust, he said, adding that it is the first time such rain entered Nepal from Rajasthan. The meteorologist warned people not to collect and use such rain for some days as it may contain chemical elements.

Rain, thunderstorm likely at isolated places in UP tomorrow

Isolated places of western and eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh are likely to witness rain or thunderstorm tomorrow, the MeT department has said. According to the meteorological department, thunderstorm or dust storm accompanied with gusty winds is very likely at isolated places in eastern Uttar Pradesh, while western part of the state will witness thunderstorm coupled with squall on June 17. The day temperatures were above normal in Varanasi, Allahabad, Kanpur and Moradabad divisions of the northern state yesterday. Etawah and Fatehgarh were the hottest places after recording a high of 43.4 degrees Celsius.

Rains bring down day temperature in Himachal Pradesh

Rains lashed several parts of Himachal Pradesh leading to sharp fall in day temperatures, even as the local meteorological department warned of thunderstorm accompanied with squall at isolated places in mid and lower hills of the state tomorrow. Gohar was the wettest in the region with 115 mm of rains while, Gaggal and Sundernagar recorded 51 mm and 49 mm of precipitation respectively. Banjar received 46 mm of rains, followed by Bijahi 45 mm, Kotkhai 30 mm and Jogindernagar, and Bhoranj each 24 mm. The day temperatures in Una dropped from 41.2 degrees Celsius to 36.7 degrees Celsius, Bhuntar recorded a high of 34.5 degrees Celsius, followed by Nahan 33.1 degrees Celsius, Dharamsala 30.2 degrees Celsius, Solan 29.4 degrees Celsius and Shimla 25.9 degrees Celsius. Night temperatures stayed close to normal and Manali was coldest with a low of 11.4 degrees Celsius, followed by Kalpa 12.2 degrees Celsius, Keylong 12.4 degrees Celsius and Shimla 15.2 degrees Celsius.

Gusty winds bring down day temp in Rajasthan

Day temperatures in Rajasthan dropped by a few notches due to gusty winds, while Churu, which recorded a high of 41 degrees Celsius, was the hottest place in the state. Pilani, Kota, Jaipur and Bikaner recorded maximum temperatures of 40.2 degrees Celsius, 40.1 degrees Celsius, 39.8 degrees Celsius and 38.8 degrees Celsius respectively. The MeT department has forecast dry weather in the state and similar conditions till tomorrow.
