Normal life affected as high-velocity dust-storm hits Pb, Hry

Normal life was hit as many places in Punjab and Haryana, including Chandigarh, were today hit by a high-velocity dust storm. The storm, with wind speed exceeding 45 kmph, also hit Chandigarh during the afternoon, forcing vehicles to move with their head-lights on as visibility level reduced considerably. Many parts of Punjab including Mohali, Zirakpur, Patiala, Ludhiana and Muktsar were hit by the dust-storm. Among other places in Haryana which were hit by dust-storm included Panchkula, Karnal, Mahendergarh and Ambala. Light to moderate rains also lashed many places after the dust-storm. There were reports of trees being uprooted on several roads in the region while power supply was also hit for a brief period due to the storm. According to the Meteorological Department here, the maximum temperatures dropped at many places in the region after dust-storm and rain. Squall, dust storm lash Delhi

A squall and dust storm lashed the national capital this evening bringing the mercury down, offering respite to the Delhiites from the scorching heat. A squall with a wind speed of 59 km per hour hit the city at 16.45 pm and continued till 16.47 pm, MeT Department said. The maximum temperature was recorded at 38.3 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year, whereas the minimum temperature settled at 27 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season's average. The humidity oscillated between 66 and 38 per cent. The MeT office has forecast overcast skies along with possibility of a drizzle for tomorrow. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover at 36 and 26 degrees Celsius respectively," the weatherman said. Yesterday, the maximum and minimum temperatures here settled at 37.6 and 26.5 degrees Celsius respectively.

Intense heat wave sweeps nation

Hot weather conditions continue to prevail in Pb, Hry; Narnaul hottest

Hot weather conditions continued to prevail in Punjab and Haryana, with Narnaul recording the hottest place at 42.8 degrees Celsius. Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, recorded its maximum at 36.2 degrees Celsius, one notch below normal, as per Chandigarh Meteorological department report. Among other places in Haryana, Bhiwani recorded its high at 39.4 degrees Celsius, while Ambala registered its maximum at 35.1 degrees Celsius, two notches below the normal. The maximum temperature of Hisar was 40 degrees Celsius. In Punjab, Amritsar's maximum was 40 degrees Celsius, two notches above the normal. Patiala and Ludhiana experienced hot weather conditions at 37.7 and 36.6 degrees Celsius respectively. According to the MeT forecast, light rains/thundershowers may occur at isolated places in Punjab and Haryana in the next 24 hours.

Sunny day in Delhi, max temp settles at 37.6 deg C

The national capital witnessed a sunny day today with the maximum temperature settling at 37.6 degrees Celsius, a notch below the season's average. The minimum temperature was recorded at 26.5 degrees, two notches above the normal, while humidity levels oscillated between 63 and 40 per cent, a meteorological department official said. The weatherman has forecast overcast skies and rain, and thundershowers accompanied by a squall tomorrow. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 38 degrees Celsius and 27 degrees Celsius respectively," the MeT department said. Yesterday, the maximum and minimum temperatures in Delhi settled at 40 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius.

Blistering heat in Rajasthan, Jaisalmer hottest

Blistering heatwave prevailed in Rajasthan' Ajmer, Bikaner, Jodhpur and Kota divisions, officials said today. Jaisalmer was the hottest place in the state with a high of 46.5 degrees Celsius, followed by Churu and Bikaner where the day temperature was 46.4 and 46.2 degrees Celsius respectively, according to MeT department here. Kota, Barmer and Sriganganagar recorded maximum of 45.6, 45.4 and 45 degrees Celsius respectively whereas other districts registered day temperatures below 45 degrees Celsius. Thunderstorm with very light rain also occurred at isolated places in Jaipur, Bikaner, Kota and Ajmer divisions in the last 24 hours, while other areas remained dry. The MeT department has forecast heatwave and dust storm at isolated places in the state during next 24 hours.

Up to 200,000 Rohingyas at risk from monsoon rains in Bangladesh

Rains, hailstorms likely in Himachal this week: Met

The Met office has predicted rains, squall and hailstorms in lower and mid hills of Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday and Thursday as the maximum temperature across the state increased by a few notches. It predicted rains and thunderstorms in mid hills and rains or snow in higher hills for the next six days. The forecast has worried farmers as squall and hailstorms may damage the standing wheat crop, fruit and apple crops. The agriculture department has advised farmers to immediately harvest the wheat crop and store them under a covered area. The maximum temperature in Una town was recorded at 41.2C. Sundernagar, Bhuntar and Nahan recorded a maximum of 35C, 33.8C and 33.2C respectively. Keylong was the coldest place in the state with a minimum temperature of 4.1C.

Nagpur heat touches 10-year high at 45.6 degrees Celsius

Maharashtra's Vidarbha region today continued to reel under intense heat with Chandrapur recording the highest temperature for the region at 46.8 degrees Celsius and Nagpur touching a ten-year high of 45.6 degrees Celsius, meteorological department officials said. Yavatmal, at 44.5 degrees Celsius today, also saw its highest temperature in ten years, the officials of the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) here added. "Brahmapuri in Chandrapur district recorded temperature at 46 degrees Celsius and Wardha recorded 45. Akola, Amravati and Gadchiroli had temperatures of 44 degrees Celsius. Buldhana was at 40 degrees Celsius," the officials said.

Light rains in Jaipur as mercury remains above 40 deg C across Rajasthan

Light rainfall brought some respite from the sweltering heat for people in Jaipur, where the mercury soared over 44 degrees Celsius mark today. Traces of rain were also recorded in Kota and Churu districts, a MeT official said. Severe heat waves prevailed in parts of Rajasthan with maximum temperature being recorded at 46.1 degree Celsius in Jaisalmer followed by 46.0 degrees Celsius in Sriganganagar. Churu, Bikaner, Kota, Barmer recorded maximum temperatures of 45.9, 45.7, 45.6 and 45.4 degrees Celsius, while Jaipur, Ajmer, Jodhpur, Dabok and Pilani recorded 44.2, 43.2, 42.4, 42.4 and 42.1 degree Celsius, respectively The MeT department has forecast heat wave and dust storm besides hailstorm at isolated places in the state for tomorrow. It has also predicted light rain or thunderstorm at isolated places.

Severe thunderstorms possible over east, northeast India this week: IMD

The India Meteorological Department today forecast a widespread thunderstorm activity over east and northeast India during the next three-four days. The IMD said a cyclonic circulation lies over east Bihar, West Bengal and Jharkhand and a trough runs from this cyclonic circulation to Manipur across Meghalaya. An east-west trough also runs from Punjab to southeast Madhya Pradesh across Haryana and west Madhya Pradesh. "Under the influence of the above systems, scattered to widespread rainfall/thunderstorm activity is very likely over east and northeast India during next 3-4 days," the IMD said. Thunderstorms accompanied with squall, and hail are "very likely" tomorrow at isolated places in Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand and the seven northeastern states. Rain gives respite to Delhi from scorching heat

Rain and thunder showers late in the evening today brought some respite from the scorching heat to the people of Delhi, as the maximum temperature touched 40.4 degrees Celsius. Rain and thunder showers were witnessed in several parts of the national capital around 8.30 pm, bringing the temperature down. The maximum temperature touched 40.4 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 27.6 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal, the Met department said. The relative humidity oscillated between 66 per cent and 27 per cent. The weather man has forecast partly cloudy sky for tomorrow with a possibility of rain and thunderstorm or dust storm in the national capital. "The maximum temperature tomorrow will be around 39 degrees Celsius and minimum temperature around 28 degrees Celsius," the Met department said. Yesterday, the minimum temperature was recorded at 28.4 degrees Celsius, while the maximum had settled at 39.6 degrees Celsius.

Severe heat wave conditions prevailed in parts of Rajasthan with the maximum temperature touching 45.4 degrees Celsius in Kota today, a MeT official said. Jaisalmer, Bikaner and Churu recorded 45.2, 45 and 45 degrees Celsius each, followed by 44.8 degrees Celsius in Barmer, 44.7 degrees Celsius in Sriganganagar, 43.1 degrees Celsius in Jaipur, 42.9 degrees Celsius in Jodhpur, 42.5 degrees Celsius each in Ajmer and Pilani and 41.9 degrees Celsius in Dabok. The minimum temperature was between 27 and 32 degrees Celsius in most of the cities across the state, the MeT said. The department has warned of heat wave or dust storms at a few places in the state and predicted light rain or thunderstorms at isolated places in west Rajasthan, whereas the weather is likely to remain dry in east Rajasthan.

Mercury rises marginally as stormy conditions subside in Himachal

The mercury rose marginally here today as stormy conditions subsided with the local MeT office predicting rains and thundershowers in the mid hills and rains or snow in the higher reaches over the next six days. The weather is expected to remain dry in the lower hills till May 5, except for May 2 and 3, the MeT said. There was rain at isolated places in the past 24 hours. Hot weather conditions prevailed in most parts of Punjab and Haryana, where Hisar registered a maximum temperature of 43.2 degrees Celsius today. Bhiwani and Karnal in Haryana recorded above normal maximum temperatures of 41.6 and 39.5 degrees Celsius, respectively, a Meteorological Department report said here. Chandigarh, the common capital of Haryana and Punjab, registered a maximum temperature of 38.5 degrees Celsius. In Punjab, Ludhiana recorded an above normal maximum temperature of 40 degrees Celsius, while Patiala and Amritsar recorded 40.2 and 39.8 degrees Celsius, respectively. It was a warm Sunday morning in the national capital today with the maximum temperature expected to touch 40 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature was recorded four degrees above normal for the season at 27.6 degrees Celsius, said a MeT department official. "Partly cloudy skies in later half of the day are forecast. The maximum temperature will hover around 40 degrees Celsius," he said. The relative humidity was 66 per cent at 8.30 AM. Heat wave likely in Rajasthan, MP, Maha over next 2 days: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) today issued a heat wave alert over Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, central Maharashtra and Vidarbha over the next two days. Dust storm along with thunderstorm is also likely over west Uttar Pradesh tomorrow, it said. "Thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds are very likely at isolated places over east Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Tamil Nadu, Pudducherry and Kerala. "Heavy rains are likely at isolated places over West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura," the IMD said in its forecast for tomorrow. A cyclonic circulation currently lays over southeast Uttar Pradesh and neighbourhood. There is also a cyclonic circulation over Gangetic West Bengal. A similar weather pattern is likely on April 30, the IMD said.
