Light rain breaks Delhi's dry spell

Delhi woke up to a light downpour on Monday morning, with the temperature dipping to 24 degree Celsius.The Indian Meteorological Department had predicted thunderstorm for Monday, accompanied with gusty winds. As per the forecast, similar weather will continue for the next two days.The effect of Sunday's rainfall in Srinagar was visible in the national capital.Delhi witnessed its first storm of the season on Friday that gave way to a light drizzle, much to the relief of the people. Dusty winds with the speed of 81 kms per hour swept over the city.However, soaring temperatures were back to trouble the city the next day.

Rains lash Kashmir, more expected over next 3 days

Rains lashed Kashmir today bringing down the maximum temperature across the Valley with the MeT office forecasting the wet spell to continue over the few next days. Most parts of Kashmir, including summer capital Srinagar, received rains today, an official of the meteorological office here said. He said the downpour brought down the maximum temperature by several degrees across Kashmir with Kupwara in the north registering a drop of about nine degrees. Kupwara recorded a maximum temperature of 16.4 degrees Celsius against yesterday's 25.6 degrees Celsius, the official said. He said Srinagar recorded a high of 20 degrees Celsius, compared to 26 degrees yesterday. The weatherman has forecast more rains over the Valley over the next three days. There is a possibility of fairly widespread to widespread rain or snow or thundershowers over the state, the official said. Hot day in Delhi; max temp at 36.3 deg C

It was a hot day in the national capital today with the maximum temperature settling at 36.3 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season's average. The minimum temperature settled at 23 degrees Celsius, three notches above the normal, said an official from the MeT Department here. The humidity oscillated between 69 and 36 per cent and the sky remained mainly clear. The MeT office has predicted partly cloudy sky for tomorrow. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover at 37 and 23 degrees respectively," the weatherman said. Yesterday, the minimum temperature was recorded at 19 degrees Celsius while the maximum temperature settled at 36.6 degrees Celsius.

Intermittent rain, storm in several parts of HP; temp slide

Intermittent rain and storm lashed several parts of Himachal Pradesh while high altitude tribal areas received mild snowfall causing fall in temperatures. The day temperatures dropped by two to five degrees to stay at 35.2 degrees Celsius at Una in lower hills while Sundernagar and Bhuntar recorded a high of 29.6 degrees Celsius and 29.5 degrees Celsius respectively, the local Meteorological (MeT) said. Light rains occurred at some places in Himachal Pradesh today even as the weather remained dry in the region with strong winds lashing the surrounding areas in the state. Gaggal recorded 19 mm rains, followed by Nehri 10 mm, Jogindernagar 9 mm, Manali and Jhungi 7 mm, Dharamshala 5 mm and Dalhousie 4 mm. Cloudy morning in Delhi, possibility of light rains

Residents of the national capital today woke up to a partly cloudy morning, with the minimum temperature settling at 22.5 degrees Celsius, three notches above the season's average. The weatherman has predicted light rains in some areas in the city later in the day. The humidity level recorded at 8.30 am was 55 per cent, according to the Meteorological department. "The skies will remain partly cloudy and there is a possibility of light rains in some areas today," an official of the department said. The official said that the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 37 degrees Celsius. Panel set up for weather-based fruit crop insurance scheme

A 17-member state-level technical committee for restructured weather-based fruit crop insurance scheme has been constituted by the Maharashtra government. The committee will study the fruit crops which are affected by changes in the weather, and the resultant economic loss. It will submit its report through the agricultural commissioner within one and a half months, a press release said. The Regional Director of Horticulture Department will head the committee.

Mercury registers considerable rise in Delhi

Mercury registered a considerable rise in the national capital this morning with the minimum temperature settling at 23.2 degrees Celsius, five notches above the normal. The relative humidity was registered at 67 per cent, further adding to the discomfort of people. "The minimum temperature recorded was 23.2 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature is likely to be 39 degrees Celsius," a MeT official said today. While Safdarjung Observatory's reading is considered the official one for the city, minimum temperatures recorded at other weather stations were -- Palam (24 degrees Celsius), Ridge (23.3), Ayanagar (23.2) and Lodhi Road (22.7). The weatherman forecast partly cloudy skies. Heat wave condition prevails in Raj's Bikaner division

Severe heat wave conditions continued in Rajasthan's Bikaner division, where Churu was the hottest place in the state registering a day temperature of 42.2 degrees Celsius. Churu is closely followed by Barmer which sizzled at 41.4 degrees Celsius, the MeT department said. Blistering heat affected normal life in other parts of the state also. Bikaner and Jaisalmer each recorded a high of 41 degrees Celsius, while Kota, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Pilani and Sriganganagar registered maximum temperatures of 40.7 degrees Celsius, 40.5 degrees Celsius, 39.9 degrees Celsius, 39.1 degrees Celsius and 39 degree Celsius respectively. The weatherman has predicted heat wave conditions for some pars of Jaipur and Bikaner divisions till tomorrow.

Expect 'normal' southwest monsoon, says Skymet

The country is likely to witness a "normal" southwest monsoon, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said in its forecast today. However, the southern peninsula and major portions of northeast India are likely to witness "below normal" rainfall this season, it said in a statement. "India is most likely to witness normal annual Monsoon rains at 100 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA)," it said. The monsoon is considered 'normal' if the average rainfall is between 96-104 per cent of LPA. Anything less than 90 per cent of LPA is termed a "deficient" monsoon, and 90-96 per cent of LPA is considered "below normal". There is only 20 per cent chance of above normal monsoon rains, 20 per cent chance of below normal rains and zero per cent chance of a drought, Skymet said. June would record excess rainfall, July is likely to be normal and August below normal, it added. Rainfall activity will pick up again in September.
