Cold wave conditions persist in UP

Cold wave conditions persisted in many parts of Uttar Pradesh where dense to very dense fog occurred at several places, the weather office said today. Lakhimpur Kheri recorded the lowest temperature at four degrees Celsius. Night and day temperature rose in Faizabad, Lucknow, Bareilly, Moradabad, Agra and Meerut divisions, giving some respite from chilly weather conditions. Dense to very dense fog is likely in some parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh tomorrow, the Met office predicted.

Kargil coldest in J-K at minus 20 deg C

Kargil was the coldest recorded place in Jammu and Kashmir with the mercury there settling at minus 20 degrees Celsius as the cold wave tightened its grip in the valley and Ladakh region. An official of the Meteorological Department here said that Kargil, in the frontier Ladakh region, was the coldest recorded place in the state. The night temperature in Kargil settled at a low of minus 20 degrees Celsius last night marginally down from minus 19.3 degrees Celsius the previous night, he said. The nearby Leh town was the second coldest as the mercury there settled at a low of minus 13.8 degrees Celsius nearly seven degrees down from minus 6.9 degrees Celsius the previous night. The official said Srinagar, the summer capital of the state, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.1 degrees Celsius last night over a degree down from minus 2 degrees Celsius. North India reels under intense cold

Intense cold prevailed in northern parts of the country with high-altitude areas in Jammu and Kashmir receiving a fresh bout of snow and those in Himachal Pradesh reeling under arctic conditions. The minimum temperature in the national capital settled at 5.6 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season's average, with fog reducing visibility in several parts of the city in the early hours. Though there was a marginal increase in temperatures in Kashmir and the Ladakh divisions due to an overcast sky, the mercury stayed below the freezing point in most areas, including Srinagar. Cold wave persists in most parts of Himachal Pradesh

Intense cold wave conditions persisted in most parts of Himachal Pradesh, even as the minimum and maximum temperatures rose marginally. Mercury rose to 26.2 degrees Celsius in Una in Siwalik foot hills, while Keylong in tribal Lahaul and Spiti district recorded minimum temperature at minus 6.1 degrees Celsius, 3.9 degrees Celsius above normal. Kalpa in tribal Kinnaur district and Manali recorded a low of minus 1.6 degrees Celsius and minus 0.4 degrees Celsius, followed by Bhuntar 1.4 degrees Celsius, Sundernagar 2.4 degrees Celsius and Solan 3.4 degrees Celsius. Una and Shimla recorded minimum temperatures at 5.2 degrees Celsius and 5.7 degrees Celsius, followed by Palampur 6.5 degrees Celsius, Nahan 7.1 degrees Celsius and Dharamsala 7.6 degrees Celsius. Cold wave continues in Bihar, Bhagalpur coldest at 4.3 degrees

Cold wave conditions continued in Bihar today where Bhagalpur was the coldest place in the state at 4.3 degree Celsius. The state capital, Patna recorded a minimum temperature of 8.2 degree Celsius. "Severe cold day" was observed at Supaul and Farbisganj while Bhagalpur and Purnea experienced "cold day", the Met department bulletin said. "Dense fog or very dense fog in the morning with cold day conditions" has been predicted for Patna, Bhagalpur and Purnea over the next 24 hours while Gaya is expected to have fog/mist in the morning and mainly clear sky later", the Met forecast said.

Phulbani coldest place in Odisha at 3 degree Celsius

Phulbani in Kandhamal district was the coldest place in Odisha today at 3 degree Celsius while cold wave conditions prevailed in the state's interior districts. Phulbani was the coldest place in the state while intense cold wave conditions was reported from Belghar, Kotgarh, Belghar and G Udaygiri areas of the district which also reported severe frosting. Daringbadi also in Kandhamal district shivered at 7.5 degree Celsius, Met office said. As many as 14 places including Phulbani in Odisha recorded minimum temperature below 10 degree Celsius. In state capital Bhubaneswar the minimum temperature was 12.4 degree Celsius while in Cuttack it was 11.5 degree Celsius. Min temp rises in Raj; Mount Abu shivers at 1 deg C

The minimum temperature rose by 1 to 2 degrees as compared to yesterday's at most places in Rajasthan, while the state's sole hill station Mount Abu shivered at 1 degrees Celsius. Sikar recorded 6 degrees Celsius followed by 6.2 degrees Celsius in Alwar, 7.5 degrees Celsius in Bhilwara, 7.7 degrees Celsius in Sriganganagar, 7.9 degrees Celsius in Churu, 8.7 degrees Celsius in Pilani, 9 degrees Celsius each in Chittorgarh and Dabok, 9.2 degrees Celsius in Swai 12.8 degrees Celsius each in Jaipur and Barmer. Dense fog was witnessed in Sriganganagar and the maximum temperature was recorded in between 21 and 31 degrees Celsius respectively, he said. Muzaffarnagar coldest in UP at 2.8 deg C

Muzaffarnagar remained the coldest place in Uttar Pradesh recording the minimum temperature of 2.8 degrees Celsius with cold wave conditions prevailing over the state, the MeT office said today. Day temperature was below normal in Gorakhpur, Faizabad, Lucknow, Bareilly and Varanasi divisions, while night temperature dropped in Meerut, Allahabad and Moradabad divisions. Dense to very dense fog occurred at many places over eastern and western parts of the state. The weather office predicted fog and cold to severe cold conditions at certain places across the state tomorrow.

Mercury hovers near normal in Punjab, Haryana

Temperatures in Harayana and Punjab hovered in the normal range for the second day today, providing respite to the people from cold weather. However, fog reduced visibility at a few places in the morning, causing travel disruptions, a MeT department official said. Police said a few vehicles were involved in a pile-up on the Rohtak-Delhi national highway due to poor visibility. Amritsar in Punjab recorded a low of 8.1 deg C, Ludhiana 6.5, Halwara 7.8, Bathinda 7.7 and Patiala 7. Gurdaspur and Adampur experienced a cold night at 3.8 degrees Celsius and 4.8 degrees Celsius. The mercury in Chandigarh rose to 7.6 degrees Celsius. In Haryana, Ambala registered a low of 8.2 degrees Celsius, while Hisar's minimum settled at 7.7 degrees Celsius. Narnaul (8), Rohtak (9.1) and Sirsa (9.6) too recorded their temperatures above normal.

Fresh snowfall in Kashmir; cold abates due to cloudy sky

The famous ski-resort of Gulmarg and other areas in the higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley witnessed a fresh bout of snow last night, though intense cold abated due to an overcast sky. There were reports of precipitation in many areas in the higher reaches of Kashmir. The administration in Kashmir yesterday issued an avalanche warning in seven districts of the valley. The warning existed for avalanche-prone areas in Anantnag, Kulgam, Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora and Ganderbal districts of Kashmir division for 24 hours from 5 pm yesterday. The MET office forecast mainly dry weather in Kashmir till January 22. Meanwhile, the minimum temperature at most places in the valley and the Ladakh region increased last night owing to cloudy sky. Cold morning in Delhi, max temp may touch 25 deg C

The national capital woke up to a chilly morning with the mercury settling two notches below the season's average at 5.6 degrees Celsius. The entire northern region remained enveloped by a dense fog which disrupted railway traffic, leading to cancellations of 15 north-bound trains while 39 were delayed. The weather office has forecast a maximum temperature of 25 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity in the air was 100 per cent at 8.30 am. Yesterday, the minimum temperature had settled at 5.6 degrees Celsius while the maximum temperature was 23.1 degrees Celsius.

Kargil shivers at -19 deg C; avalanche warning for 7 districts

Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh reeled under arctic conditions today, with Kargil being the coldest place in northern India at -19 degrees Celsius, even as dense fog in Delhi affected rail services. Authorities in Srinagar today issued an avalanche warning for seven districts of Kashmir till tomorrow evening in view of forecast of rain or snow. "According to the additional commissioner, Kashmir, avalanche warning exists for avalanche prone areas in Anantnag, Kulgam, Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora and Ganderbal districts of Kashmir division," an official spokesman said here. He said the warning would be valid from 5.00 PM today to 5.00 PM tomorrow. "While all deputy commissioners concerned have been asked to take all precautionary measures to avert any untoward incident, the general public has been appealed not to venture in these areas during the warning period," the spokesman added. Cold conditions prevailed in the national capital today as the minimum temperature dipped to 5.6 degrees Celsius, while dense fog in morning hours led to the cancellation of 18 north-bound trains and delayed several others. Cold wave prevails in Bihar, Gaya coldest at 4.5 degrees

Cold wave conditions continued in Bihar today where Gaya was the coldest place with a minimum temperature of 4.5 degree Celsius. According to the Met bulletin, "cold day" was observed at Bhagalpur, Purnea and Chapra, in addition to Patna where the minimum temperature was recorded at 7.1 degrees Celsius. Severe cold conditions to prevail in Uttar Pradesh

Cold to severe cold conditions are likely to prevail over the next few days at certain places in Uttar Pradesh, where Muzaffarnagar recorded the lowest temperature of 4.2 degrees Celsius. Hamirpur with the minimum temperature of 4.6 degrees Celsius, Lakhimpur Kheri and Agra with a minimum temperature of 4.8 degrees Celsius and Bareliy at 5.2 degrees Celsius were among the other coldest places in the state. The Meteorological office said dense to very dense fog was likely to occur at many places in the eastern parts of the state and at some isolated parts of the western Uttar Pradesh.
