Delhi's air quality 'very poor', to improve Friday: Authorities

The overall air quality in the national capital was in the "very poor" category on Thursday despite thunderstorm and rains in several parts of the city, authorities said. They said the air quality is expected improve on Friday. According to data provided by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the overall air quality index (AQI) of Delhi was at 335. An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered "good", 51 and 100 "satisfactory", 101 and 200 "moderate", 201 and 300 "poor", 301 and 400 "very poor", and between 401 and 500 "severe". The CPCB said 29 areas in the national capital recorded 'very poor' air quality, while in three areas it was 'severe'. The level of PM2.5 (particles in the air with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometres) was recorded at 163 and the PM10 level was at 261, it said. Fresh snowfall in upper reaches of U'khand

The upper reaches of Uttarakhand received fresh snowfall on Thursday while the lower areas were lashed by heavy rains, the meteorological department said. Areas located above 2,500 metres above the sea level in Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts received fresh snowfall and the lower areas in most of the districts were hit by rains adding to chill all over the state, it said. The Met office said it started snowing in Badrinath, Hemkund Sahib, Rudranath and Panchkedar temples in Chamoli district and at Kedarnath in Rudraprayag district early in the morning and continued intermittently. Cold winds blowing from the hills swept the plains which also received showers in varying degrees, it said. It rained intermittently in Dehradun throughout the day. Flights diverted as rain, hailstorm hit Delhi-NCR

A couple of flights were diverted in Delhi between 8 to 10 on Thursday morning due to inclement weather conditions. The flights diverted were domestic carriers. In the morning, light rain showers accompanied by hailstorm lashed several parts of the capital and its adjoining areas.GoAir G8 709, which was coming from Ahmedabad was diverted to Rajasthan's Jaipur while Vistara UK 946 was diverted to Lucknow in the morning.Notably, Delhi is expected to witness intense spells of rain and thundershowers with isolated hailstorm activity for the next two days. "Light scattered rains are expected to continue over the national capital region till February 15. By February 16, the weather systems will move towards east India giving rain in Uttar Pradesh," said Skymer, a private weather forecasting agency."As a consequence of the rainfall activity, maximums in Delhi and its adjoining areas will drop by 2 Degree Celsius to 4 Degree Celsius, while the maximums will again start increasing February 16 .

Most parts of Himachal Pradesh likely to receive rain or snow

Morning sky was cloudy in most parts of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday and the weather department has forecast rain or snow later in the day. Amidst prediction of snowfall, scores of tourists reached various popular spots, including Shimla, Kufri, Manali and Dalhousie, to celebrate Valentine's Day. According to data provided by the weather office in Shimla, Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong received 16 cm snowfall and Kinnaur's Kalpa received 2 cm snowfall from 5.30 pm Wednesday to 8.30 am Thursday. The weatherman has issued yellow weather warning for heavy rain and snowfall on February 14 and 15. The minimum temperature in most parts of the state rose by a few notches. North India likely to witness moderate rainfall, hailstorm in next 24 hours: Agro Meteorology Department

After some sunny days, northern parts of the country is likely to witness rain and hailstorm in the next 24 hours, according to IMD. "A fresh western disturbance is approaching north India, in the next 24-48 hours. Moderate rainfall and hailstorm are expected in various parts," said Prabhjyot Kaur, Head of the Agro Meteorology Department.On Thursday, residents of Delhi woke up to light rain. The capital and its surrounding areas such as Noida, Gurugram and Faridabad witnessed gusty winds and thunderstorm owing to the same western disturbance."The moderate rainfall and hailstorm will affect the crops in various parts," Kaur said.

Delhi-NCR witnessed light rain on Thursday morning even as the minimum temperature settled at 13.9 degrees Celsius, an official said. The weatherman has predicted more rain in several areas of the national capital later in the day. According to the Meteorological (MeT) Department, 1.3 mm rain was recorded till 8.30 am The official said humidity level recorded at 8.30 am was 96 per cent. "The skies will remain cloudy throughout the day. Light to moderate rain may occur later in the day," he said. The official also said the maximum temperature is expected to settle at 23 degrees Celsius.

Eastern Canada digs out from major snow storm

A huge snowstorm blanketed eastern Canada on Wednesday, closing schools, grounding hundreds of flights and forcing many workers to stay home as tens of thousands of plows toiled to clear roads. Big fluffy snowflakes began falling Tuesday afternoon, with more than 30 centimeters (12 inches) accumulated on the ground by the next morning and more on the way, according to weather forecasts. Fresh snowfall, rain in Kashmir Valley

The Kashmir Valley received fresh snowfall and rains overnight, leading to an increase in the minimum temperature, even as the Meteorological department has forecast moderate precipitation across the state for the next two days. Fresh snowfall was recorded in Gulmarg and Pahalgam tourist resorts as well as in Kupwara, an official of the Met office here said. He said while Gulmarg , the famous ski resort in north Kashmir, received 30 cm snow during the night, Pahalgam, which also serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath yatra in south Kashmir, recorded 3 cm snow. Min temps rise across Punjab, Haryana

Minimum temperatures on Wednesday hovered above normal limits at most places in Punjab and Haryana, meteorological department officials said here. Chandigarh, the common capital of the two states, recorded a low of 12 degrees Celsius, they said. Gurdaspur in Punjab experienced a cold night at 6.8 degrees Celsius followed by 8.2 degrees Celsius in Adampur, 8.6 degrees Celsius in Amritsar, 8.8 degrees Celsius in Ludhiana and 9.2 degrees Celsius in Bathinda. Halwara recorded 9.3 degrees Celsius, Faridkot 9.5 degrees degrees Celsius, and Pathankot and Patiala recorded lows of 9.8 degrees Celsius each, the department said. In Haryana, the minimum temperature in Karnal settled at a low of 8.4 degrees Celsius followed by 10.4 degrees Celsius in Ambala, 10.5 degrees Celsius in Narnaul and 11.1 degrees Celsius in Hisar, it stated. It was a partly cloudy Wednesday morning in Delhi, with the minimum temperature settling one notch above the average for the season at 11.4 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity was 98 per cent, at 8.30 AM, said a MeT department official. Generally cloudy sky with possibility of very light rain or thundershowers by the night are forecast for the day. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 24 degrees Celsius. On Tuesday, the minimum and maximum temperatures settled at 10.6 and 23.6 degrees Celsius respectively.

Clear skies prevailed in the city with the minimum temperature settling at 7 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season's average. The maximum temperature was recorded at 22.3 degrees Celsius, a notch below the normal, a Met department official said. The humidity oscillated between 97 and 49 per cent. The Met office has forecast partly cloudy skies for Tuesday. "There will shallow fog in the morning. The skies will be generally cloudy with haze thereafter.
