Cold weather conditions prevail in Punjab, Hry

Cold weather conditions continued to prevail at most places in Punjab and Haryana on Monday, with minimum temperatures settling a few notches below the normal limits, the MeT department said. Narnaul in Haryana was the coldest place in the two states at a low of 5 degrees Celsius. Hisar recorded a minimum of 5.8 degrees Celsius, a Meteorological department official said here. Rohtak (6.8), Sirsa (6.8), Ambala (8.7) and Bhiwani (8.7) also experienced a cold night. In Punjab, piercing chill swept Bathinda, which recorded a low of 5.7 degrees Celsius while Amritsar recorded a low of 7 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in Pathankot settled at 8.2 degrees Celsius. Amritsar (7), Adampur (8.2 ), Patiala (8.7) experienced a cold night while Ludhiana registered a low of 10 degrees Celsius, which was within the normal limits. Chandigarh, the common capital of the two states, registered a low of 9.8 degrees Celsius, also within the normal limits.

Slight relief from cold wave in Himachal

A sunny Monday brought slight relief to most parts of Himachal Pradesh from the ongoing cold wave conditions as the minimum temperature increased a few notches, the Meteorological Department (MeT) said. However, the Shimla MeT centre has forecast snowfall and rain at some places in mid and high hills while thundershowers in low hills and plains of the state from February 12 to February 15. The minimum temperature in Manali, Kufri, Dalhousie and Shimla was recorded at 0 degree Celsius, 2.1 degrees Celsius, 2.9 degrees Celsius and 4.1 degrees Celsius respectively, it said. Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong continued to be the coldest place in the state with the lowest temperature at minus 10.8 degrees Celsius, the Met department said, adding the minimum temperature in Kinnaur's Kalpa was minus 4.2 degrees Celsius.

Delhiites woke up to a cold morning on Monday with minimum temperature settling at 7 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season's average. The meteorological office has forecast "shallow" fog in the morning and partly cloudy skies with haze and smoke through the day. Cold wave conditions continue in Rajasthan, Mount Abu freezes at 0.4 degrees Celsius

Mount Abu was the coldest place in Rajasthan with a minimum temperature of 0.4 degrees on Saturday night as cold wave conditions continued in the state, the meteorological department said. Fatehpur in Sikar district was the second coldest as the mercury settled at a low of 0.8 degree Celsius. It was followed by Dabok at 3.4 degrees Celsius, Chittorgarh at 3.5 degrees Celsius, 4.4 degrees Celsius in Churu, 4.6 degrees Celsius in Pilani and 4.7 degrees Celsius in Banasthali, the weather office said on Sunday. The MeT department has predicted the weather to remain dry for the next 24 hours.

Schools to remain closed in Kullu, Shimla due to heavy snowfall

Due to heavy snowfall, the district administrations of Kullu and Shimla on Sunday declared two days holiday for primary and senior secondary schools in the region. The minimum temperatures hovered a few notches below normal limits at most places in Punjab and Haryana on Sunday, the MeT department said. In Punjab, Amritsar was the coldest at a minimum temperature of 4.6 degrees Celsius, followed by Bathinda (4.7), Adampur (4.8), Faridkot (5.8), Halwara (6.8), Gurdaspur (7), Ludhiana (8.2) and Patiala (8.5), the weatherman said. Union Territory Chandigarh, the joint capital of the two states, recorded a minimum temperature of 7.4 degrees Celsius, a Meteorological department official said. At a low of 3.6 degrees Celsius, Narnaul in Haryana was the coldest place in the state. It was followed by Hisar (5.4), Karnal (5.6), Rohtak and Bhiwani (6.7 each) and Ambala (7.9).

Himachal to receive more snowfall, rain next week

More snowfall and rain is expected to lash Himachal Pradesh next week, the meteorological department said Sunday. The weatherman has forecast snowfall and rain at some places in mid and high hills while thundershowers in low hills and plains from February 12 to 15. Cloudy skies prevailed in most parts of the state Sunday, with tourist spots Manali and Kufri experiencing biting cold at minus two and minus 0.5 degrees Celsius respectively from 5.30 pm Saturday to 8.30 am Sunday, he added. The tribal district Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong continued to be the coldest place at minus 11.6 degrees Celsius, the Met office said, adding, the minimum temperature in tribal district Kinnaur's Kalpa was minus 4.6 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in Shimla was 2.5 degrees Celsius followed by Solan (2.4), Chail (2.3) and Dalhousie (1.2).

Fog in Delhi, days to get warmer

Jammu-Srinagar NH closed for fourth day

The strategic Jammu-Srinagar national highway remained closed for the fourth consecutive day on Saturday as efforts were on to restore the only all-weather road connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country, officials said. Men and machinery are on the job to clear the landslides which had blocked the 270-km highway at nearly a dozen places between Ramban and Banihal, while the snow clearance operation around Jawahar Tunnel in Kulgam district is also going on at war footing, Inspector General of Police (Traffic) Alok Kumar told PTI. "Efforts are on to restore the highway as soon as possible," he said. A traffic department official said major landslides had struck the highway at Peeda, Sherbibi, Digdole, Maroog, Anokhifall, Panthiyal, Nashri, Khuni Nallah and Gangrasoo over the past couple of days due to incessant rains. Cold wave conditions return to Kashmir Valley

Cold wave conditions returned to Kashmir as the minimum temperatures on Friday night plunged several degrees below freezing point, which resulted in formation of black ice on the roads in the valley, hampering the movement of traffic, officials said Saturday. Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 5.7 degrees Celsius on Friday night, registering a drop of nearly five degrees compared to the previous night, an official at the MeT Department said. Gulmarg ski-resort in north Kashmir was the coldest place in the valley as the mercury plunged to minus 14.4 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 12.7 degrees Celsius, he said. Qazigund recorded a low of minus 9.0 degrees Celsius while Kupwara and Kokernag registered minimum temperatures of minus 7.4 and minus 7.7 degrees Celsius, respectively.
