Terrorist killed in encounter with security forces in JandK's Pulwama

Pulwama (JandK), May 18 (ANI): One terrorist has been neutralised in an exchange of fire between terrorists and joint team of security forces earlier today. The encounter broke out in Panzgam village of Awantipora in south Kashmir's Pulwama district. The area is under cordon. More details are awaited.

Teachers-students of St Stephen's College stage protest against inclusion of a Supreme Council member in admissions

New Delhi, May 18 (ANI): Teachers-students of St Stephen's College staged protest against the inclusion of a Supreme Council member in its interview panel on Friday. They are condemning the decision calling it "illegal and unacademic". Teacher representative in its governing body says "The Council has no role in admission." While speaking to ANI, St Stephen's College Assistant Professor Nandita Narain said, "Admission has to be on basis of merit, merit is academic. When they're being interviewed for their admission to a course, and these aren't courses in Theology, then what's the role of a church member who isn't a teacher of the college? What's his accountability?"

Election agent or candidate can submit written request before RO for recounting of VVPAT slips, if wants: Addl CEO Uttarakhand

Dehradun (Uttarakhand), May 18 (ANI): While speaking to ANI, Additional Chief Electoral Officer sof Uttarakhand Dr V Shanmugam said that if an election agent/candidate wants VVPAT slips of a booth recounted, he can submit written request before RO. He said, "After votes in EVMs have been counted, slips from 5 randomly selected EVMs will be counted. In case there is a difference between the 2 tallies, they'll be cross-checked again and the stally of VVPAT slips will be considered as the final tally." He further said, "If an election agent/candidate wants VVPAT slips of a booth recounted, he can submit written request before RO. RO passes a speaking order. If he allows recounting, slips from particular VVPAT will be counted before all counting agents and results shown to them." >

God too feels heat: Coolers installed in a temple in UP's Ayodhya

Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh), May 18 (ANI): Due to scorching heat, coolers installed at a temple in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya. Shri Sita Ram Mandir has installed these coolers for the Gods so that they don't feel too much heat. They also bathe idols of deities with rose water to beat the heat. Temperature in the temple town has touched 40 degrees and likely to increase in the coming days. Temple's priest said, "Temperature is high, so we have arranged coolers for the Gods. We bathe them with rose water as well."

Olympian rower Dattu Bhokanal booked after wife claims he harassed her physically and mentally

Nashik (Maharashtra), May 18 (ANI): Olympian and Asian Games medallist Dattu Baban Bhokanal has been booked for allegedly harassing his wife physically and mentally between December 22, 2017 and March 3 this year, a Nashik police official said Friday.Bhokanal's wife, who is a police constable with Nashik Rural police, had lodged a complaint on Thursday night following which a case was registered under sections 498 A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code, an official said.Police Inspector SY Bijli, Adgaon told ANI, Bhokanal a rower with the Army, is a resident of Talegaon in Chandvad tehsil of Nashik, he said."According to the complaint, he married the woman as per Hindu rituals and had promised her two times that he would marry her in a proper and public manner only to backtrack," the official said.He said the complaint was being probed and no arrest has been made so far.Bhokanal was the only rower to qualif

NASA selects SpaceX, Blue Origin, more to build next human lunar lander

New Delhi, May 18 (ANI): After receiving an additional USD 1.6 billion funding for its space programs, NASA has announced that it has selected 11 private companies to work with for building the next human landers for its Moon program.On the official blog, NASA listed companies including Elon Musk's SpaceX, Amazon's Jeff Bezos-owned Blue Origin, and American aerospace giant SpaceX, among the partners which will help send American astronauts - the first woman and the next man, on the Moon's south pole by 2024 and build sustainable missions by 2028.This program, called Next Space Technologies for Exploration Partnerships (NextSTEP), will require participating companies to contribute at least 20 per cent of the total project cost. The total award amount for all companies is USD 45.5 million. >

Teen pregnancy in India strongly linked to child stunting: Study

New Delhi, May 18 (ANI): Children born to teenage mothers in India are more likely to be stunted than those born to adult moms, according to the first comprehensive study to examine links between teen pregnancy and chid undernutrition in the country.India is home to more stunted children than any other country and is one of the ten countries with the largest burden of teenage pregnancy, said researchers at the US-based International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).Although marriage before the age of 18 years is illegal in India, the 2016 National Family and Health Survey (NFHS)-4 revealed that 27 per cent of girls are married before their 18th birthday and 31 per cent of married Indian women gave birth by the age of 18 years."Reducing adolescent pregnancy in India can hasten our progress towards achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to poverty, health, nutrition, general wellbeing, equity, and education," said IFPRI Research Fel

ISRO Chairman K Sivan inaugurates Young Scientist Programme

Sriharikota (Andhra Pradesh), May 18 (ANI): Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman Dr K Sivan inaugurated the Young Scientist Programme (YuViKa) in Andhra Pradesh's Sriharikota. He interacted with students from all across the country during the first 'YuViKa-Samwad-2019' held at Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The programme is aimed at imparting basic knowledge of Science and space technology to school-going students from different states and Union Territories (UT) of the country in order to arouse their interest in space-related activities. Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Sivan said "The programme will enthuse students from every nook and corner of the country and make them good scientists." A total of 110 students are participating in the program spread over two weeks this year.

Mumbai's iconic Chitra Cinema shuts down, 'SOTY 2' last film screened

Mumbai, May 18 (ANI): After seven decades of its successful run, Mumbai's legendary Chitra Cinema, which had made a place in people's hearts, has shut down. Curtains were drawn on the iconic theatre, located in Dadar East, due to poor business. The single screen auditorium stopped operating and the last screening was of Tiger Shroff-starrer 'Student Of The Year 2' at 9:30 pm. Dara Mehta, who is the third generation owner of the cinema hall, revealed that the theatre wasn't minting good money. He shared that the business on weekdays was poorer. Mehta had taken over the business of Chitra Cinema from his father in 1982. Speaking to ANI, Mehta said on weekends, the cinema hall would witness good footfalls, but on weekdays, it hardly added any collection to the business. The single-screen theatre served as the ultimate destination for Hindi film buffs who would line up to watch films like Sholay, Deewar, and several other blockbusters. Elephant 'Lakshmi' of Puducherry temple enjoys indoor shower this summers

Police sieze 690 kg cannabis in Visakhapatnam

Shopian encounter: Army pays tribute to slain soldier in Srinagar

Srinagar (JandK), May 17 (ANI): Indian Army today paid tribute to late Sepoy Rohit Kumar Yadav who lost his life during a counter terrorism operation yesterday, at Handew Village of Shopian district, wherein two terrorists were eliminated. All ranks paid homage to the slain soldier on behalf of a proud nation. In a show of solidarity, representatives from other security agencies also joined in to pay their last respects to the martyr. Late Sepoy Rohit Kumar Yadav, sustained bullet injuries during a fierce operation. He was provided immediate first aid and evacuated to 92 Base Hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
