Guna (Madhya Pradesh), May 12 (ANI): A sector officer of the Election Commission was suspended on Saturday for taking a reserve Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) to his residence in Madhya Pradesh's Guna. "The EVM has been seized and the officer has been suspended, further action will be taken on instructions of the higher ups," said Shivani Raikwar Garg, SDM, Guna.
Aurangabad (Maharashtra), May 12 (ANI): Locals in Nagaon village of Maharashtra's Aurangabad are alleging that the dropping water level in Godavari river is killing thousands of fishes. One of the locals said, "Water level is dropping since the past two months causing the deaths. Even drinking water isn't available for humans and animals." Several districts in Maharashtra are facing acute water shortage and centre and state governments are mulling steps to tackle the situation.
Vadodara (Gujarat), May 12 (ANI): Viha Bharwad, hailing from Vadodara, is preparing a 125-foot long incense stick and the reason being the welfare of cows. Bharwad wants a cow shed in every district and also the animal be declared as national mother. "Reason behind making this incense stick is to declare cow as national mother and increase cow's importance. This incense will be burnt in a Yagna that is to take place in Ahmedabad Film City," Bharwad told ANI.
New Delhi, May 12 (ANI): DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet proven to have beneficial effects on high blood pressure may also reduce the risk of developing heart failure by almost half in people under 75 years, according to research. The research was published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. The DASH diet emphasises eating of fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, poultry, fish, and low-fat dairy products while reducing consumption of salt, red meat, sweets, and sugar-sweetened beverages. It is similar to the Mediterranean diet but differs in recommending low-fat dairy products and excluding alcoholic beverages. The observational study of more than 4,500 people showed that those individuals under 75 who most closely adhered to the DASH diet had a significantly lower risk of developing heart failure than those whose eating habits were least in keeping with the diet.
Jhalda (West Bengal), May 12 (ANI): Residents of Madhupur and Bortar villages in West Bengal's Purulia district have decided to boycott the Lok Sabha elections to protest against the lack of development in their areas. The villages, which fall in Jhalda block, face acute water shortage, lack of roads and healthcare facilities. Rajiv Mahato, one of the villagers, said, "We have nothing here. No roads, no water, no Anganwadi. We demand that government should solve our issues." Purulia will go to polls on Sunday in the sixth phase of Lok Sabha elections.
Bhubaneswar (Odisha), May 12 (ANI): Post the devastating cyclonic storm Fani that left trails of destruction in coastal parts of Odisha, the restoration work is being undertaken to restore normalcy. The Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneshwar had also affected due to the landfall made by Fani, but the restoration work has started at the animal sanctuary. "Fortunately, not a single casualty was suffered out of the 3500 animals at the zoological park, restoration work underway," said Anjan Kumar Mohanty, Curator at the zoological park.
Bathinda (Punjab), May 12 (ANI): Locals of Kanakwal village in Punjab face several issues due to release of sulphur gas from oil refinery into surroundings. While speaking to ANI a local said, "we face breathing and skin problems, among other diseases. The smell is too much to tolerate. Some have even died from breathing issues." Level of gas keeps on fluctuating further adding to the woes of villagers. Amarjeet Singh, a resident of Kanakwal, Bathinda said, "We had raised this demand in previous elections also- to relocate our village, had held protests as well. But due to different political views of the villagers, the matter subdued." Villagers also informed ANI that women, children and animals suffer the most due to the presence of sulphur gas.
New Delhi, May 12 (ANI): Who needs charging stations when you can charge your electric vehicle on-the-go, literally. Swedish city, Lund, will be one of the first in the world to install a real-life demonstration of a new type of electric road. According to Fast Company, the kilometre-long stretch, to be built by Elonroad, will make it possible to charge electric vehicles while driving. The electric road technology will make it possible for batteries to be 80 per cent smaller than their traditional counterpart, which in turn, will make e-vehicles cheaper. Sweden will start building the first section of the demo road in 2020.
Muzaffarnagar (Uttar Pradesh), May 12 (ANI): Farmers sounded red alert as three sugar mills in Muzzaffarnagar of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday stopped the crushing of sugarcanes. The respective mills are in Tikola, Bhesani and Khaikhedi. Chaudhary Shakti Singh, a farmer, urged the authorities to not close down sugar mills as long as their crops were standing in the fields. He also said that the dues of sugarcane farmers are still not cleared. Muzaffarnagar's Additional District Magistrate Amit Singh told ANI, "Crushing of sugarcane has stopped in the areas where sugarcane isn't available. Sugar mills are running wherever sugarcane is available. Once the sugar is sold, farmers will automatically receive their dues in their accounts."
