SC notifies Centre on PIL seeking to decriminalise abortion

New Delhi, Jul 15 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice to the Centre after three women filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), seeking to decriminalise abortion. The petition challenges the provisions of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act which says that pregnancy, after a certain period of time, should be terminated only to save lives. The petition also wants government's say to be scrapped in first 12 weeks of pregnancy, and the woman in question should have the right to go for abortion without any approval of a medical practitioner. "The PIL challenges Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971. First, the petition wants no state role in first trimester pregnancy. Second, there should be no discrimination between married and unmarried women when it comes to unwanted pregnancy," said Sanskriti Pathak, petitioners' lawyer.
