New Delhi, Mar 31 (ANI): Group of Ministers held meeting in the national capital on March 31 amid coronavirus outbreak in the country. The meeting was chaired by Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan. EAM S Jaishankar also attended the meeting. The cases of coronavirus have mounted to over 1200 in country with over 30 deaths.

COVID-19: Doctors disappointed with allotment of poor quality medical equipments in WB's Siliguri

Siliguri (West Bengal), Mar 31 (ANI): The doctors in North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) are disappointed and not satisfied with the allotment of plastic raincoats instead of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while treating COVID-19 patients. The authority is not supplying face masks, hand gloves and other equipments to doctors. While speaking to ANI, one of the doctors said, "The authority is not able to supply face masks, hand gloves and other equipments. Health workers are not getting anything which is a major concern. If the health workers get infected, then what will be the scenario of health system?" "The authority provided us plastic raincoats instead of PPE, in which we got a black colour sunglass in place of scientific goggles (safety glasses). Medical personnel conduct casual check-ups for migrant labourers returning from neighbouring states

Chhatarpur (Madhya Pradesh), Mar 31 (ANI): Several migrant labourers reached Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur from different parts of country. These migrants include women and children as well. Medical team is employed at entry points to scan their health. Medical personnel were seen using thermal scanner from a wide gap. A doctor present at spot said, "If we take temperature from 5-7 feet away then it will not give the correct result."

Nationwide lockdown: Transgender distribute food packets to needy in Surat

Surat (Gujarat), Mar 31 (ANI): Transgender distributed food packets to needy persons amid lockdown over COVID-19 outbreak on March 31. Around 150 transgender in Gujarat's Surat distributed food packets which include-rice, pulses, sugar and tea to the needy ones. They made 1500 kits (food packets) and distributed it in slum areas. While speaking to ANI, a member of the group, Nisha said, "We had started with 200 kits but now it has gone up to around 1500. We prepare it ourselves for distribution. We used to get together for celebration of navratri, but it got cancelled this year due to COVID-19. So, we thought of doing this instead." There are total 69 positive cases of coronavirus in Gujarat. Mumbai, Mar 31 (ANI): Security tightened in Mumbai due to nationwide lockdown over coronavirus outbreak. Mumbai Police are allowing only those individuals availing or rendering essential services. Police checked passes and identity cards of people amid the movement of vehicles in Mahim area during coronavirus lockdown. Migrant workers self-isolate outside village post return from Kerala

Kalahandi (Odisha), Mar 31 (ANI): At least 12 migrant workers from Pipalguda in Kalahandi, who had returned from Kerala, have self-quarantined themselves outside the village. After returning they went to hospital for COVID-19 test and were tested negative. But they decided to stay outside as a precautionary measure. Facebook pledges USD 100 million to support news industry

New Delhi, Mar 31 (ANI): Facebook announced that it will provide more financial support for the news industry working during the COVID-19 pandemic. The investment fund includes USD 25 million in emergency grant funding for local news through the Facebook Journalism Project and USD 75 million in additional marketing spend, the official blog notes. The first round of the grants went to 50 local newsrooms in the US and Canada. Publishers used the grant to support coverage through covering travel costs, remote work capabilities and hiring freelance reporters. Facebook is working on providing support to publishers most in need in the hardest-hit countries.

Study links salt-rich diet to weaker immune system

New Delhi, Mar 31 (ANI): Opting for a high-salt diet can not only be problematic for one's blood pressure, but also for the immune system, suggests a recent study. The research was conducted on mice that were fed a high-salt diet. Later, they were found to suffer from much more severe bacterial infections. Human volunteers who consumed an additional six grams of salt per day showed pronounced immune deficiencies. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended a maximum amount of five grams of salt a day. Sodium chloride also appears to have a negative effect on the human immune system. In human volunteers, excessive salt intake also resulted in increased glucocorticoid levels.
