Water bodies get polluted after immersion of idols in Karnataka's Hubli

Hubli (Karnataka), Sep 20 (ANI): As Ganesha Chaturthi festivial concluded last weekend, rivers, lakes and other water bodies once again became more polluted following immersion of idols worshipped in pandals across the nation. However, some people had raised the issue, Karnataka's Hubli residents demanded to clean a well that has been polluted due to Lord Ganesha statue immersion. Traditionally, the idols were made of mud and painted with natural colours. But now many are made using plaster of Paris (PoP) and coated with harmful paints containing heavy metals, all of which end up in the rivers and other water bodies. Central Pollution Control Board guidelines and court directions are yet to achieve the desired result of keeping rivers and lakes free of pollutants like heavy metals and PoP used in idols.

Drug for treating psoriasis can be used to treat malaria, finds study

New Delhi, Sep 20 (ANI): Drug used for treating skin disease psoriasis may now be used to effectively treat malaria, suggests recent study. Researchers modified a class of molecules called pantothenamides to increase their stability in humans. The new compounds stop the malaria parasite from replicating in infected humans and from being transmitted to mosquitoes and are effective against malaria parasites resistant to currently available drugs. A paper describing this new class of modified pantothenamides was published in the journal Science Translational Medicine. Malaria is caused by the parasite Plasmodium falciparum, which is transmitted to humans from the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito. Because many Plasmodium parasites have developed resistance to the most common drugs used against them, there is a pressing need for effective new treatment options. The team found that the modified pantothenamide molecules not only interfere with the development of the malaria parasite dur
