Silent strokes common in older patients: Study

New Delhi, Aug 19 (ANI): Researchers have found that silent covert strokes are more common than overt strokes in people aged 65 or older who have surgery. While an overt stroke causes obvious symptoms, such as weakness in one arm or speech problems that last more than a day, a covert stroke is not obvious except on brain scans, such as MRI. Each year, approximately 0.5 per cent of the 50 million people age 65 years or greater worldwide who have major, non-cardiac surgery will suffer an overt stroke, but until now little was known about the incidence or impacts of silent stroke after surgery, reported the study published in the journal, 'The Lancet.' Dr Devereaux and his team found that one in 14 people over age 65 who had elective, non-cardiac surgery had a silent stroke, suggesting that as many as three million people in this age category globally suffer a covert stroke after surgery each year. NeuroVISION involved 1,114 patients aged 65 years and older from 12 centres in North and So

Cases with court monitored investigation show better outcome: Justice Dhananjaya Chandrachud

Mumbai, Aug 18 (ANI): While addressing at an event in Mumbai on August 17, Supreme Court judge Justice Dhananjaya Chandrachud spoke on Pehlu Khan Case. He said, "I tell you this is one of the great torments of being a judge because you have to decide on basis of evidence as it stands and then you find that police investigation has been so woefully inadequate that it is going to result in acquittal." "Cases where courts have been approached with a petition at an appropriate stage and courts have been able to monitor investigation, have perhaps shown a better outcome," he added. Pehlu Khan, a cattle trader, was beaten to death allegedly by self-proclaimed cow vigilantes on suspicion of cow smuggling in Rajasthan's Alwar district in 2017. An Alwar court on August 15 acquitted all the six accused in the lynching case, giving them the benefit of doubt. However, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said that the state government will file an appeal against the court's ruling.
